I’m going to focus a little more on my vertical training now that my right knee/leg is getting stronger. I built a homemade vertic-like device to measure it. It’s built from:
10 ft 1.25" PVC tube ($3.50)
1 PVC coupler ($1)
1 1.5" to .5" PVC T ($1)
1 1/2" pvc tube ($1)
1 bucket ($1)
15 lbs of concrete and some screws (had some around the house)
It’s portable, adjustable and surprisingly accurate on flat ground. My standing reach is about 93" and I was able to barely reach 9’7" on the 2nd jump in the video for a 22" vertical. The third jump off a few steps shows my explosiveness is still nonexistent. I’d guess it’s only 2" higher than my standing. I attribute this to my knee not being 100% yet.
When I was 150lbs in high school I was dunking off what I’d estimate to be about 28-29" standing vertical. I think just dropping from my current 248 lbs down to 210 over the winter is going to put me close to that range. If my knee rehab keeps coming along, I think I might be dunking on regulation again for the 1st time in over 17 years by next summer.
Awesome to see this thread still going! I thought it got lost when the forum structure got switched up.
I’ve recently been dropping some weight so I can play in a couple leagues this summer and have seen my jumping ability improve as I get in better shape. The strength work I’ve done for the past year or so has definitely helped my 2 foot jump, which was always my weak point when I was younger. I’ll try to get some vids up soon.
Any of you guys posting about what your training looks like? I’d definitely be interested in seeing that.

Thanks man.
I got bored around the house over the weekend so I just put it together. I got weird looks in the parking lot while I was doing the jumps, but it was from fat people going to dunkin donuts so I didn’t give a fuck haha
a still from today, can’t upload the pic cause of maintenance mode, anyway, got up pretty nice…

BobDigNy: I just half squat for reps or singles every day… session 1 = jumps/dunks, session 2 = squat, session 3=hypers+calve raises

Caught a 2 hand mini-cockback from the dotted line last night, but shattered the screen on my phone so no vid [sad face]. That was probably the best dunk I’ve had since I’ve been playing again, which means it’s the best dunk in the last 3 or so years. It felt awesome. Also caught a pretty easy 2-hand dunk off 1 step. Sorry about the lack of recent vids, but gonna get a new phone today so new vids are coming soon. Y’all be good.

That sounds awesome. Must feel good to be back.
Question for you and the others:
I don’t know if you guys have ever been heavier, but how much extra vertical you get from losing weight. Would you say about an inch for every 10 lbs sounds about right? More/Less?
It’s a theoretical question so I know there’s not going to be a magic answer but just curious on your thoughts. I’ll have better insight myself when I start losing weight in August.

Thanks Sam, but I’m not quite there yet. I’d say I’m a good 4-5" off my heyday.
That’s a good question, but I think it depends on the quality of the weight lost to a degree, and also how the individual carries the weight [if that makes sense]. Think it was DeFranco who said “You can’t carry 300lbs of shit in a 200lb bag”. I think losing extra body fat and excess weight would make your quality of movement better and take major pressure off joints/tendons/ligaments, etc…, but I also think there’s a point of diminishing returns. Like [these are just random numbers] if you felt great at 200lbs and 12% bodyfat, there’s no guarantee you’d feel even better at 155lbs and 4% bf, or that it would have any athletic benefit. Hope that makes sense.
I am definitely jumping higher now than I was when I was at my heaviest. When I was making the push for 225 I felt sluggish and not very athletic. Now that I’m back down to 210 I feel a lot better and I’m jumping a few inches higher than I was.
if you drop bodyfat and keep your same level of strength you will be able to jump quite a bit higher IMO.
Wear a 20lb vest and try to jump. Then when you strip off the vest, have the same strength/explosiveness as before but are 20lbs lighter, you’re going to jump a lot higher.
Oh yeah, WF, those dunks sounded awesome. Looking forward to seeing some vids.
I havent really jumped in a while. I twisted my ankle pretty good last saturday and its still not back to 100% yet. its sore (so is my shin) but its getting better.
Thanks man. I’m actually dealing with a janky ankle right now as well. What’d you do to your shin?

i rolled my ankle last saturday and from walking on it/over compensating for the hurt ankle it made the muscle on the outside of my shin/calf real sore.
Its feeling better now but its still tender for sure
Hey Guys, been reading this forum for a lot of time, great information! Just wanted to say that you guys are giving me confidence that one day I will dunk despite my height. And to keep you motivated, just watch that 5’9 guy dunking, he’s crazy (sorry if someone already posted videos from him, I have not seen every pages of the topic). Yeah, I thinking the same way as you. I’ve got a good amount of pure fat to lose and was just trying to gauge where I’m at. I mean I can reach about 9’9 from a standstill with all the extra chub so I’m thinking there’s no way I’m not getting rim after dropping 40 lbs of fat even just maintaining strength. But of course this is purely speculation but I’m going to put it to the test in August.

So you saw some results from just dropping 15 lbs? Good to hear, sounds encouraging.
Well, tendonitis in my left knee has been flaring up big time lately, but I’m actually kinda pumped. It’s not crippling total knee pain, it’s just tendonitis. Feel like that’s a huge step in the right direction. Anyway, got my new phone and will post some new dunks this week then give my knee a break for a bit. Y’all be good.

it wasnt even 15lbs… more like 8-10lbs lol
I feel like the drop in weight and the actual jumping “practice” i was getting really helped my vert. I’ve still got this semi bum ankle so I havent jumped in a while. (it really sucks. I havent rolled my ankle since my junior year of highschool and its definitely not a bounce back in a day or two thing. Maybe I strained a tendon or something?)
