Vert/Speed Training Thread

I actually don’t think you want to palm the ball in a windmill. You just want it to stick to your hand with the centripetal force. Big hands helps, but when I first started trying to do windmills, I would always try to palm the ball, but that makes your arm tense up. Squeeze your fist as hard as you can and try to straighten your arm; not nearly as quick as with a relaxed hand.

I’m sure some people palm it, but I’ve found that keeping the arm wrist loose and just letting the whipping motion of the arm stick the ball to the hand works a lot better.

Yeah, either you aren’t jumping high enough or you have the slowest arm swing of all time. Can you palm a ball? Windmills are more about timing than hops. If you can get a 2-hand cockback you should be able to get a windmill, provided you have big enough hands.[/quote]

No, I can’t palm a ball. :frowning:

It has to be a coordination issue with my arms. Every time I dunk around (hasn’t been in a while) I always try windmills and fail horribly. I’ve tried keeping my arms “tucked in” and “extended out”, all leading to the same failure. When I do the counter-clockwise (left-right jumper) motion I can feel it working against the momentum my lower body has created.

I can only palm the ball on the ground but lose it in the air. When I’d do 'em I’d cuff it and as I’d come in to the top side of the arm swing I’d “roll” the ball into my fingers and dunk. I always felt like if I coulda palmed it mid-air my dunking repetoire woulda been much, much better. There was only a handful of dunks I could do one handed due to my palming issue.

Box squats with chains will dramatically increase your vertical along with box and depth jumps

nice lil jump from last night, after the lights went off real early, ruining my session.

^^^That’s a cool pic. Almost looks like a drawing or comic boom or something with the colors.

thanks, ya i didn’t know how the lighting would be but i was annoyed, i still had a bunch of max jumps left in me, glad the lighting turned out good. unfortunately, all of the parks that close at 9:30-10pm, none of them have any light from say, parking lots etc, near the courts… it’s always pitch dark there… I have to jump late so, would be nice to have some place lit up.

the clouds were full, ready to pour.

pc

arowe progress update, these are definite PR’s (37" RVJ at least on his best jump today, whole hand over rim) for him… he’s on his second rotation through his power block, which in itself has become sort of a peaking block since he deloads after 3 intense sessions. gets in some big jump sessions, then repeats…

check this, rim is 10’ exact, he’s 5’8, single arm reach of 7’5.5":

here’s some pics:

dno where they will show up in this post actually heh…

here’s some more, showing his reach too:

Sorry if this is already somewhere in the thread, but does anyone have a link to something to gauge jump distance? Averages and such, with a breakdown for women too?

I’m not sure what you’re asking for specifically. Like something to measure a broad jump, or a chart to see what’s good? If you’re trying to measure broad jumps, set out a tape measure, start at the 1" mark and jump. Mark where your heel lands and try again. Record your best effort of the day and try and beat it.

I’m just trying to figure out what a decent distance would be (vertical).

Oh, the average vert for women college basketball players is in the low 20’s. The average for guys is in the high 20’s. When you see people talking about their verts they usually overestimate by a couple of inches. They get bent out of shape when you say it, but they test on a vertec and find that they were indeed greatly overestimating. If you’re in the low 20’s you’re doing damn good.

I don’t expect to be anywhere near a college basketball player! I’ve never tried it before and I measured with post-it notes on my wall and I measured just under 16 inches. But I figure I must get some credit for being under 5’5"

Seriously though I was just curious what a decent jump would be.

Haha. Don’t know your athletic background, but 16" for a woman who hasn’t done a lot of running/jumping for a sport is pretty good. Make 20" goal and work for it. Another way to test on a wall is with chalk or something that rubs off on your fingers. The problem with the wall is you usually don’t/can’t put everything into 'cause there’s a wall there.

For a 5’5" female, I would say that being able to touch an 8’6" high target would be “good,” 9’ would be “very good,” and 9’6" would be Division 1-level athleticism.

Havent been working on my jumping at all lately. I’ve been working on gaining weight (counterproductive to getting a higher vert I guess) But I really wanna try to hit 225BW.

After seeing the past couple pages of this thread and those last videos posted I’d like to test out my vert and see what its at. Maybe I’ll check today and if it doesnt suck too bad I’ll post my results lol

How tall are you? For a 6’ male, the highest standing vertical jumpers will tend to be in the 220-250 range, the best running jumpers in the 180-220 range. Pure standing vertical definitely goes hand-in-hand with strength.

I’m 5’11" standing flat footed I can ‘snap’ the rim a d with a running jump I only get maybe 2 inches higher? It’s kinda pathetic lol. I’ve been working on closer stance front squats lately to try and strengthen my quads and focus on lifting explosively (especially out of the hole)

There was a zumba class going in the basketball court at my gym today so I didn’t jump at all. Just worked legs instead. If I’m not feeling terrible tomorrow I’ll try a few jumps and see how I do.

tried a few jumps today and they were AWFUL! I was pretty sore from lifting legs yesterday but still. Standing flat footed I could barely touch the rim and with a run up I was getting maybe 2 inches over the rim lol… it was pathetic. I’m gonna re measure my reach now just to see what its at (cant remember from when I posted it a while ago and dont really want to go looking for it.)

EDIT: Measured my reach and it was 91"
