I am a high school football player and am going camping for a week with my family. I have a medicine ball but no weights. What would you suggest for my workouts? Is sprinting, jumping, throwing, and some pushups & chin ups good enough?
Sprinting, jumps, push-ups, and medicine ball throws all are a good idea. If you can get hold of a kettlebell, that’d be terrific - a few hundred kettlebell swings a day would be a great way to keep yourself busy - but if not, the first few things listed all would be good options for a week without weights.
Sure thing… jumps, sprints, hill sprints, walking while carrying a heavy bag in your arms or on your shoulders, lunges with a heavy bag in your arms are all good options.
Also I would increase your training volume during the week prior to the vacation, that way you will not detrain, but surcompensate during your vacation.
@bigtruck: I’ve taken rings to take to a playground in case I couldn’t find a decent gym before. Lifeline makes a portable power jumper that is banded resistance for jumping and bands similar for pushups. Just some ideas I have used before if I had nothing else to use.
When I go on vacation for a week, I typically do absolutely nothing. But like CT said I increase my training volume the week prior. “By increase training volume” I mean that I border on overtraining. Then I use the week off as a deload, or as I like to say “reload”. Every single time I have done this (3 times per year for about 10 years) I have come back stronger after the layoff and with no change in bodyweight. The latter, however, is due in part to the fact that I always eat pretty clean regardless of where I am…
