Under 200 lbs Progress/Update Thread

My squat has been stalled badly lately, so I’ve come up with a plan I would like some input on or just to share.

The last success I’ve had came from running a modified Smolov plan known as Peter Putz. It really just takes a couple sets off the base smolov mesocycle, and goes 9x3, 7x4, 5x5, 3x6, which is doable and I forgot what it was but something like 70% or so of the regular volume. It was a 3 week plan with 4 days/week of squats which I did and got my last volume PR of 355x5x5, which was long enough ago.

I’m doing it again, this time split over 6 weeks instead of 3, squatting 2 days/week. The first 6 weeks are going to be the same loads as the first time I ran it, to give me some time to accumulate and allow me to do some assistance work and keep pulling, although I’m going to take it easy there as well and just try to maintain.

Next 6 weeks is the same, but 10lb jumps each wave instead of 20lb jumps. The sets ramp from 9x3,7x4,5x5,3x6 (reps x sets). Each wave is 4 workouts and lasts 2 weeks.

One thing I’ve noticed, is that when I have my loads programmed out before hand, I tend to work harder and am much more motivated just from having a mission for the workout.

I’ve been trying the conjugate stuff, but I still don’t think I’m strong enough to get enough out of it and don’t have the variety of equipment needed to properly implement an ME day.

Edit: My bench has responded well to it though, as slowly but surely I’m creeping up.

I’m pretty excited about this approach, and we’ll see what happens.

i’m normally right at 198ish and i’d like to go 181 sometime but i don’t think that would go well for me lol. and good to hear you no longer despise me lol.

Angus, Wednesday is DL day for me. 395x10 was easy. How’s your training going? [/quote]

Hit 405x7 today, and 440x5 on rack pulls. Wendler’s calculator that he gives in the 5/3/1 e-book puts my max at 499.

I need to hang out in the PL forum more often, you guys are beasts.

I’ve got years of practice cutting weight from rowing lightweight so I know how to do it very well and not sacrifice performance especially considering since rowing is a 2 hour weigh in and not 24 hours like most meets. 24 hour weigh in is ridiculously easy compared to 2.

We just prefer to go about our training differently than bodybuilders. Luckily all the drama stays in the bodybuilding forum and people leave us alone since we care about how many plates we’re moving, not necessarily how pretty we look in a bikini.

I value that more each day… I consider myself a generic weightlifter at the moment. Perhaps when Angus comes to town I’ll get interested in competing! Till then I just take the best from both worlds.

Damn straight.

New bench PR, 180 @ 135 bodyweight (touch and go). 15 pound PR and solid milestone considering my bench is by far my weakest lift. Next meet is may 21st, looking to go 275, 175, 415 in the 132 class

A 135-lb. guy! I’m a 110-lb. girl! Nice to meet you. Those are seriously good numbers considering your size.

I live at 146-148 and want to try cutting down to 132 for my next meet, I know that 15lb cut is doable but I worry its too big a drop at this light a weight, i know of a few 160+ guys who cut down to 148 but ive never met a 148 thats cut to 132.

you think its doable? how extreme a method would i have to implement?

A good rule of thumb for a 24 hour weigh in is to NOT cut more than 10% of your bodyweight. Lighter bodyweights this is probably a lower % as you just won’t be carrying as much water/glycogen as bigger guys. I think it’s doable but it’d be extreme.

Conventional deadlift 565lbs for a single last night which is about a 15 pound PR for me.

imaginary cigars all around

Yesterday pulled 180kg (396lbs) for 3 reps at BW 90kg (198lbs). Going to band pull next week, then go for 190kg pull.

Nice PR ahu. I’ll be chasing you down from behind. Was hoping to go for 550 at the meet but strained hamstring on second attempt made that a no go. Didn’t even get to get at it. Who knows maybe I can beat you to 600.

thanks man, i may make a moderate attempt for my next meet and just see where i can get without getting too crazy.
maybe diet down a bit(i could stand to eat a little healthier anyways) and try cutting water/ food out for 24 hrs before the weigh-in and “overhydrate” in the days leading up to that
may also pick up some dandelion root(?)
