Training With Boulders

My friend and I just bought a couple of boulders in order to train out on the beach and in the outdoors.

All the exercises we plan to do with them have been made by us so I was wondering if anyone with personal experience with this might give us some tips or cool exercises to do.

Photos or vids would be helpful as well

You bought boulders?

My thought exactly…I’ve got some oxygen to sell you…if you act now, I’ll even reduce the price to 3 easy monthly payments of $29.95!

You can pick them up, put them overhead, carry them for distance or throw them. All of which are very good exercises.

Now juggling and catching, that’s for when you’re very advanced…

A friend of mine bought her husband a 480-lb boulder that he wanted for the front yard for his birthday last year. 25-cents a pound doesn’t sound like much, but she practically had a heart-attack when they rang it up.

After the delivery guys drove off, they noticed that it was upside-down. Well, not upside-down by boulder standards, but he liked the other side better. So, he rounded up a posse of neighborhood guys to flip this sucker over. Wish I had been there to either watch or help!

I thought the people on this site might be a little bit more understanding but whatever. Yes I bought boulders, it was something like $100 a ton, so we paid for about 500 pounds of boulders and it was actually pretty cheap. Ummm no thanks on the oxygen there buddy but hey if you got any spare boulders just hit me up, we’ll talk prices.

Why dont you check over at www.ironmind.com ? They have plenty of books, videos, etc on this type of thing. I think they also have some free articles.

I think training with stuff like this is great. And finding the right size boulder is not as easy as it sounds, especially if you live in an urban area.
I would invest in a good pair of steel-toed boots though

I also think that you would do well to post this kind of question to “Strength Sports” since such stuff as boulder lifting is more of a fit to that category.

I don’t know why you are busting on this guy. Training with boulders is a hell of a lot more tough than with a perectly balanced barbell. I work with them sometimes, go grab a boulder and try screwing around with it.

Anyway, any try and replicate basic movements you do in the gym and different kinds of throws, you will really feel it if you throw it as far as you can, run to it and throw it back real fast a whole bunch of times. This wouldnt work with a real heavy one, of course.

Im just giving him a hard time because he paid for rocks.

Sounds like he got a decent price though so its not as bad.

Training with those boulders should be a pretty good time. Outdoor training is always fun…very cavemanish.

fighting tiger you’re alright, but you bet its cavemanish and fun too. Getting a good workout, some sun and plenty of strange looks.

You should look into buying or building a sled.

If you and your friend have a good deal of disposable income, then Id say, go to eliteFTS and spend it on a prowler.

I guarantee you, if you think you are in shape, 20 minutes with the prowler will make you think otherwise.

Even without the prowler, a regular sled will kick your ass.

Call some tire places and see if you can snag a 300-600 lbs tractor tire for free or cheap. Flipping tires is pretty fun, and is almost as brutal of an ass kicking as pulling a sled.

one step ahead of you on the sled idea, but the tractor tire sounds good though. Although I’m not sure where I would keep a tractor tire.

AGREED!! the prowler is a beast, absolutey kicks ur ass and will bring you down a couple notches…also tire flipping is a GREAT workout…will hit muscles you never thought you could get sore! i love tire flipping…if you can get a few, my freinds and i start with a 550lb tire flip it for 15 yeards…drop to a 350lb tires flip it for 15…and drop to a 250lbs tire and flip that for 15 yards…its a bitch of workout…we dont do it often but when we can it will leave you with zero energy left…great feeling

I was busting your balls for buying the boulders, not the fact that your training with them. I wasn’t considering that you might not be able to look out your window and see a boulder that will give you a workout. Sorry.

Guess I’m spoiled because all kidding aside, tractor tires are abundant here as well. Lots of old farms and tons of woods/mountains near me. Put on the X-vest, go for a run to a farm 2miles away, tire flips, pullups on a tree limb, run it back…not a bad outdoor weekend workout.

sounds like fun, to me those are the best workouts you can get

Yup, That does sound like fun I wish my gym had that instead of the spinning room, or the racket ball courts.

Depending on their size, have throwing competitions with your buddies. Overhead throws, too-if they are not too big.
