Monday was my 1 year anniversary from dislocating my hip. I squatted 525 in my single ply Centurion with the straps down. That is not a PR but it was a big deal for me after surgery, 9 months of rehab, and a fuck ton of pain. But, I’m gonna need to get the squat up over 600 for my meet in Feb. I’ll get video of the squat up soon.
Yesterday I set two bench PRs. The first was a single with 545 off a 3 board. I tried 565 next and stalled about 1.5" off the boards. Next time. My training partner also hit a PR with 585 off the 3 board. It was only his fourth shirt workout ever. He is going to be a 600# bencher really, really soon. We both wear a single ply F6.
The second bench PR was a 225 rep test after all the shirt work. I got it for 29, which is 3 better than my previous best. 225 felt like paper after holding 565. My partner got 37 or 38, I can’t remember which.
Squatted 450 last night in my metal viking, no knee wraps and walked out. Hopefully this means Im good for 500 in full gear (suit, 2 ply briefs, wraps) at the moment.
Depth may have been a tad high, hard to tell if it was high or if the video is just bad. Either way, I was just below or just above. Ill be making a conscious effort to leave no doubt next time. Still a PR since Iv never had that sort of weight on my back. Previous best was 420 in the viking, with knee wraps out of a mono. I dont like to speculate a lot, but Im thinking with wraps and the monolift (assuming I can set up correctly in it, haha) Im good for 460-470.

No video for the bench work this time.
Yeah it was pretty bad. I was skiing and had a bad landing off of a jump. My ski shattered and my leg just came out somehow. They had to bring me off the mountain on a sled. My leg was out of the socket for a little over 4 hours, and it was about 3 hours before they could give me any pain meds. That really sucked.
I had the hip scoped in March to clean out scar tissue and torn up tendon fragments, etc. Then rehabbed til late July. Finally started squatting again in September with weight, and started going heavy(er) in December.
Basically the only problem I have now is that I can’t cross my right ankle over my left knee like you would normally do to put your shoes and socks on. And it takes me about an hour to warm up for lower body days, which is a pain in the ass. Other than that I’m good to go, so I guess I’m pretty lucky.

Yeah the 225 reps were raw.
yeah… i used to love to ski but the thought of my 290lb ass flying down a mountain is not good.
you’ve definitely come back strong with no excuses. I get so damn tired of hearing excuses from people on why they can’t squat or deadlift.
crossing your ankle over your knee to put your socks on?? I have my wife put my socks on for me and all my shoes have the laces knotted at the eye so i don’t have to tie them. i just slip them on. shit… i have a hard enough time getting my damn boxers on. i really need someone to stand in front of me and hold them open so i can step into them. I also need someone to turn my shirt collars down when i put them on. my t-rex arms are way too short to reach back behind me. and while i’m thinking about it, it would be nice to have someone to slip my belt through those last three loops in the back for me. it would also be nice to have someone to tuck my shirts back in when i bend over or sit down.

Skiing is about the only thing that I like to do during the winter months besides lifting. So I’m going to keep doing it but I’m definitely going to leave the “getting air” business to the kids.
Coming back was never really a choice. I don’t know if I could live with myself if I couldn’t lift anymore. Maybe that’s fucked up but you can probably relate.
Yeah tying shoes is a bitch. I double knot all my laces now so I don’t have to risk them coming undone in public. I’m trying to transition all of my shoes to slip ons (except the Chucks obviously) but I hate going to the mall so it’s taking a long time.
225 squat, today, at the gym, and did I ever scream after I racked that sucker! That’s a 20lb PR, meet is next weekend and it’s just what I needed to break out of the winter blahs.
Great idea for a post. I have been inspired and rejuvenated reading how positive and encouraging this thread has been. Kudos to everyone on their achievements and keeping this thread going.
I had a pr yesterday…
295x10x3 on the incline bench. Set 6-8 had me believing 9 and 10 would be impossible, but the 10th set went up easier than the 3rd, which was a relief.
Hopefully some improvements are ahead in the squat and d/l as well!
So here we go, first time in a bench shirt since July when I pressed a shaky 190kg/420lb. Haven’t done any lockout/rack or board work since October either. I didn’t touch any of them, but I’m confident that with 12-13 weeks in the shirt that won’t be an issue come meet day. It’s a bit difficult to get an accurate perception of how close I am to touching from the front view of the latter 3 videos, but you can see how close I get with 210kg from the side in the first vid. The following 3 are all closer…
210kg/465lb x2
215kg/475lb x2
220kg/485lb x2
225kg/495lb x1
Now the question is, what am I gonna do in comp? I’d been gunning for a 210kg bench (without knowing where I was currently at) and I was expecting it to be hard, but now after doing what I did today, I’m starting to think a 220kg bench on the platform isn’t actually outside the realms of possibility. Oh and the shirt had pretty much zero jack today. Didn’t even close my belt like, so there’s scope to get some more carryover out of it I reckon - that’d be pretty nice like!
nice work Hanley. AS you said it didn’t look as hard as you probably thought it was going to be. And you clearly showed control over the weight so I think you’ll be able to touch here shortly…
Never did these before and god damn they kick ass. Its hard as hell to keep the bar in position. My quads, lower back and hamstrings are killing me.
Dang - wish I had access to an SSB. Everything Ive read says that the most challenging bar to use.

It really was. The bar really felt like it was going to throw me forward. I would caution using this with a power rack. The bar I used the bent ends did not extend past the rack. It would jam itself in the J-hook making it a bitch to get it out. I had to make the switch to the monolift in order to keep going.
