not much to post lately for PR’s since I’m following a 6 week bench cycle and a 10 week deadlift cycle. both of which use weights that are submaximal. the only day that i can whore it up is now squat day that is mostly a RE day until after my next comp.
today i hit 585 x 5 on squat. this was a 2 rep PR. I experimented with bar placement to allow me to get more air in during the set. i placed it a little higher than my normal competition squat. i could feel the weight getting in front of me a bit but i was able to breath the entire set.
i followed that up with some paused leg presses. i haven’t done these in a long time but my lower back was fried from the rep set with 585. i finished up with approximately 1150 x 6 paused.

Meat, nice work, you dominated that leg press. Have you ever tried lifting your elbows up to the ceiling ala Rippetoe when you squat? I can’t tell if that would either help you or hurt you but I was just wondering your thoughts on it.

i’m unfamiliar with the elbows thing. i always keep them under the bar and then force them forward out of the hole. it really keeps the bar over my hips.
i placed the bar a little higher for this set because i’ve been having an issue with getting enough air in on rep sets around 600lbs. the higher position helped me breath better but it also put the weight in front of me a bit. it’s all a trade off.
this monday will be day two of your bench cycle. i was sore as shit the entire week from the first day. my work capacity is shitty:) my strength dropped off quickly. hopefully i can get myself better conditioned soon.
Three singles at 200 for bench (a 10 lb PR from my prior PR).
370 Squat (a 20 lb PR).
The squat was a little scary, almost missed reracking it and for the first time, I felt like my body might not be strong enough to hold the weight. Walking it out was tough - a monolift would add 50 lbs to my squat!
not what i’d normally think of as a pr, but this is just as important to me…
just hit 210 lb bodyweight…bloated as shit and i know i’ll probably be back to around 205 again shortly, but this was definitly unmarked territory for me, and now that i have hit it once, i know i own it and its only a matter of time until i can hold it- its good to see the numbers slowly go up, and every 5 lb incraments feels like a pr
Incline press: 198 for 5 reps
First PR in this exercise in several years. This is significant because it came after a long period of not doing it at all. Thank you Boris Sheiko!
With a little left in the tank so I am hoping for several more small PR’s coming up.
Millitary press: 60x5
Again very weak, but thankfully light weight in my hands.
I hope to use a even heavier weight this week. Again without any direct work… Thanks going out to Boris Sheiko.
In the next few months benchpress pr’s should be coming up for the first time in years. Awesome!
Did you not touch the ground in those though? I’m NOT questioning your strength but I’m just curious.
You might benefit from getting a closer grip/stance too. At my first meet I pulled 475 and had a very wide grip/stance, then about 2 weeks later I narrowed it a bunch and pulled 500.

Just a thought. Good luck![/quote]
I did touch the ground on those reps. You might be able to hear it a couple of times LOL. I do pull wide but that is because I prefer my setup to be almost the same as my squat stance. I tried sumo and just don’t feel right.
That was awesome, nice work. What weight class are you? Very strong comeback on that bench after missing it once, what did you different the second time?

Thanks Tim. I compete in the 275’s.
They were a little long on the pause, and they were super strict on sinking the bar at all after the press command (which I tend to do a little), so on the first attempt I made sure it didn’t sink at all and got no pop off the chest. I also wasn’t fast at all on the first attempt. On the second one, I treated it like a DE weight and while it did sink a bit, it wasn’t enough to get red lighted. I just thought about locking out hard and fast, and it seemed to do the trick.
