Carl your very graceful- and still fast.

good luck this weekend

Thanks kmc. Ballet is on my list right after highland games and martial arts.

Breezed through it again.

Impressive throwing vids…if it’s ok with you, I’d like to use them when I teach my Kinesiology class at OCC next Spring???

You competing in the Arizona Association State Championships?

hel, good guess, but actually its a very poorly publicised meet right down the mountain in Las Vegas, the Nevada USATF Open and Masters Track and Field Championships. How’s that title for the first meet of the year? If I was rich, I’d send you and the wife some airline tickets to come and play. I don’t want to make any predictions, but I think a big throw in shot is due.

QT, go ahead and use any of the videos you want. I would be honored. The originals are much better quality. I can get those to you if you want.

5/28 Lifting

Snatch: 60/2, 67.5/2, (75/2)2
Squats: (100/3)2
Box Jumps: 20 in box, (40lbs/6)2
Snatch Grip Dead Lift: (95/5)2
Bench: (75/3)2

I’m ready to throw. Bring it on.

Punch a hole in the sky. Time for a throwgasim.

Throwgasm. I like that. I just hope they go as far as they feel like they should.

Thigh’s feeling good (adductors were strained from pulling the right leg into the middle sideways, consequence of turning the foot out. Works great for setting up the rotational aspect of the throw, but the inner thigh muscles weren’t used to it.) The high chest and setting up the torque when the left foot lands by dropping the left arm have a potential for BIG increases in distance. Get the timing right and you can actually use the strength and power you have in the throw. Combined with the adrenaline from competition, hitting one halfway right should easily send it over 16m. Get it all right and who knows? Can’t wait to see what happens Saturday.

5/29 Lifting

Clean and Jerk: 65/2, 80/2, (90/2)2
Front Squats: (95/3)2
Push Presses: (62.5/3)2
Clean High Pulls: (100/3)2
Continuous Snatches: (40/6)2

One last bout with the weights. I’ve never felt readier.

Give 'em hell Carl!

Throw high and far - kick some ass this weekend!

Have a great meet! Throw some heavy stuff FAR!

Thanks for the encouragement and well wishes. I didn’t do as well as I had hoped. Threw shot and discus today. Hammer was first on the schedule, but thinking I had a big shot throw in me, I bypassed that. Warming up for shot, I hit an easy 15.99m throw (practice pr), so things were looking good. The competition starts and I start dropping my left arm too soon, and losing position and the ability to stay in the ring. First throw about 14.5m, then three fouls, stepping out the front of the ring. Finally figure out I’m dropping my left arm too soon and get two good throws, but only out to 14.79m. Another month of work and this new technique will be stable enough to give good results.

For discus, the wind that had been perfect during hammer throw turned completely around and became a significant tail wind (for non-throwers, a tail wind knocks the discus down and decreases distances). Also, after shot, I started thinking of the day as yet another day of training, and took advantage of having a real ring to throw weight in. I did a full weight throw workout, (getting a pr 19m off of two turns) and a full discus workout (out to about 46m, not bad with the tail wind) before the discus competition even started. Then I started feeling my age, tightening up between throws in the discus and only managed 42.32m.

On a brighter note, (besides the practice prs in shot and weight), I got to talk with John Powell and listen to him teaching a novice hammer/weight thrower. I also may have acquired 5 new hammer students, four freshman boys and a junior girl. Their coach from high school (hows that for dedication, high school track season is over, and the coach and throwers are out there at a non school event) asked me if I could get together with them and teach them a bit about hammer. I hope that works out.

Have you ever competed against Patridge or Nespoli? They’re the only 2 up around your distance in the shot. Ossman’s in the low 15s and he only throws the shot. Steve and John are just plain monsters and Ossman’s at least my size. I would pay to see that competition or the looks on their face.
On another subject, I just got an e-mail and the Senior Games have added Oly lifting. First time will be in FT Lauderdale this year. Here’s the site.

19m off two turns ???

for Big Jim Wetenhall that is very good, but I would pay money to see your 2 turn weight throw, and pay a hell of a lot more for the coaching. Sensational…

oh yeah the shot is great, but as I throw 8.8, with the 6kg, I think 10m is legend status (our nats have only been won with an over 12m throw once in 5 years.) so 16m sounds like science fiction…

Congrats all round, you look like you are setting yourself up for a great season.

and more young minds to mould…good luck with them to…

hel, no, I’ve never had the honor of competing with Patridge or Nespoli. I understand that Patridge doesn’t travel much, so if I want to compete with him, I’ll have to go to Texas. He turns 55 in October, so maybe in a few years, when I’m 55 also, I’ll try to arrange it. That would be a lot of fun, competing with huge guys and pushing them. Last October at the Nevada Senior Games, a kinda big guy (not huge like you describe Patridge and Nespoli) Randy Wilson was there. He didn’t throw shot, just javelin, trying to qualify for something at the National Senior games this year. His size was intimidating. I remember hoping he wouldn’t be throwing shot, or at least that he was in a different age group.

Edit: I have thrown against Ray Burton, although that year he didn’t throw shot, only discus and hammer. He thoroughly kicked my ass in those events. And also out here we have a sleeper in that he never submits his results to the National rankings website, and also doesn’t seem to travel much, Brad Slinkard. He’s about your size. Last time I went to western regionals, he ended up winning, but that was back when we were both in the 45-49 group. He’s thrown mid 15s so far this year. I might run into him at my next meet June 20th.

Terry, hopefully there will be an opportunity for some throwing on the side next October.

6/1 Lifting

Snatch: 60/2, 67.5/2, 75/2, 82.5/2, 90/2, (95/2)2
Squats: 100/3, 112.5/3, (126/3)3 hard
Bench: 75/3, 85/3, (95/3)3
Snatch High Pulls: (105/3)3
Jump Squats: (50/6)3

On the heavy snatches, missed the first rep out front, but made the necessary corrections and nailed the second rep.

6/2 Lifting

Cleans: 65/2, 80/2, 90/2, 100/2, 107.5/2, 112.5/2, 120/2
Jerks: 65/2, 80/2, 90/2, 100/2, 107.5/2, 112.5/2, 120/2
Front Squats: 95/3, 110/3, (122/3)3
Push Presses: 62.5/3, 72.5/3, (81/3)3
Clean Grip Dead Lifts: (132/5)3
Step up with jump thingies: (40lbs/6)3

Got everything, but it was brutal.

6/4 Lifting

Snatch: 60/2, 67.5/2, 75/2, 82.5/2, 90/2, 95/2, 97.5/2
Squats: 100/3, 115/3, (126/3)3
Bench: 75/3, 85/3, (95/3)3
Snatch Grip Dead Lift: (110/5)3
Box Jumps: (70lbs/6)3

Continuing the heavy week, Missed the second snatch at 95, but came back and nailed two at 97.5, so I don’t feel too bad about the miss. Just lost my concentration at the wrong time (was thinking about the weights sliding out on the bar rather than what I needed to do). Squats were still hard, as were the benches. One more day of the heavy stuff, then school ends. Will have time for more throwing. 17m shot and 21m weight here I come.
