Throwing Heavy Stuff Far

Speaking of lifting late when we did our video session last October at the nat throw conf, we had one our top u/23 just return from US scholarship, and he lifts late, did not over rotate but lifted late, the quote by the coaches straight away was “oh, US technique " the guy queried them and they said, nothing wrong with it but it is more common to see among US throwers…”

Didn’t lift Friday, not enough sleep the night before. Relatives were in from Ohio and we took them to see Ka, one of the cirque du soleil show in Vegas. Utterly bizzare, amazing, and impressive.

5/9 Throwing

Shot: 5 stands to ~12m, 5 half spins to ~14m, 20 full throws to ~15.5m. Was feeling the positions and timing better than last week, went 100% only on the last two throws. Was working on delaying the arm strike at the end, getting my lower body to rotate further before the strike. Its a matter of rythym and timing.

Was starting to get them going closer to the left sector line towards the end. The last two I went 100% and threw ~15.25 and ~15.50, but lost the delay on the arm strike.

Weight: 5 one turn throws to ~17m, 10 two turn throws to ~18m, 10 three turn throws to ~18.75m, new pr. Threw 100% the last three throws, the second to last was the furthest. I was actually able to push some on the second turn and still hold it together. Usually I just coast through the first two turns, trying to keep good position for the third.

Here’s 5 throws with the shot from yesterday. Especially when I go hard, I have a tendency to not get my left foot far enough around, which blocks me off from the throw. This shows up worst in the 4th throw which was oddly the furthest of the session.

5 of the weight throws from yesterday. Gonna have to fix that left foot sliding back thing going on. It also looks like I should trade in some of the belly for a bit more size in my legs.

Beautiful. How the hell you can get a 17m off a 1 turn is amazing. Realized watching your shot I’m trying to keep my throwing arm and elbow too high on the release. Nice facilities there, too.

Thanks hel. I’m not sure if the low elbow just before the release is good or not so good. I never think about my arm after I start spinning, so whatever happens with the arm is purely coincidental. It doesn’t seem to have caused any problems yet. The place in the video is my 17 year old’s school. I love the rings there, and that one HAS to be a hammer/weight ring because there’s no toeboard. I don’t throw there often and refrain from throwing hammer there altogether because where those throws are landing is right on the boundary of their soccer field.

5/10 Throwing

Discus: 2 standing throws, 15 full throws to ~47m. Big improvement from last week’s 42m. Two of the throws felt very nice, with a good long time spent in double support at the front, and a good arch in my back.

Hammer: 2 one turn throws to ~37m, 2 two turns throws to ~43m to warm up, the 20 3 turn throws, best of ~48m again, but this week, the long throw looked better than last week’s 48m throw. I was balanced at the end, didn’t have to move at all after the release. Worked on countering better, sitting back with a more vertical torso. This seemed to help with keeping my left foot down throughout the throw. Had to concentrate on getting my right foot down earlier to try to fix the leftwards migrating low point. No video, but only about half the throws were in the left third of the sector and only two out of the sector on the left. Big improvement from last week.

You make that look so easy. I never get tired of watching you throw heavy stuff very far. Stay strong and throw far.

I agree with Hel, how can you throw 17m off one turn, amazing…

about your comment about skating across the concrete while turning, I never realsied I did it until, my son did some video last year, everytime I go to 180 my left kind of slides arcoss towards the front…guess that is why so many of us who three turn hammer so neatly can’t stay in the circle on three with the weight…

again extremly impressive, especially for a guy the size of a 110 hurlder…

At least you are not comparing me to a “damn marathon runner” as someone (I think it was Dan Takeuchi) did at one of my meets a few years back.

I’ve had the same experience with the foot sliding thing, could swear I was keeping the foot down until I saw the video. I think the main cause of that might be keeping your weight too far towards the right foot. Countering more (or at least better, by sitting back) seems to have helped also.

Streamline, after several thousand repetitions, it actually is kinda easy. Some of those towards the beginning (first two or three thousand) aren’t. I think that’s how I would feel watching you skate.

Dude, nice throws. I have to confess, I’ve never done either of those, never really had the opportunity. Looks fun as hell!

Wow, those throws are amazing! Thanks for posting those videos. Now I’m going to have to read through your whole thread to look for more. Wow!

I’ll second that. Thanks for the non-youtube vids btw.

Thanks SteelyD. They are a lot of fun. To get started, all you have to do is get an implement, find the throwing rings at a high school, and start having fun.

mathineer, thanks for taking a look. If you do search back, you will find mostly videos of olifting. From late September until early April I was training for Masters Nationals in Olympic Weightlifting, but now that that’s done, I’m changing the focus of my training to throwing.

Thnks zildjianman. I always try putting the videos here first, but often that fails. Only then do I resort to youtube.

5/12 Lifting

Snatch: 60/2, 67.5/2. 75/2, (80/2)3
Squats: (105/3)3
Bench: (80/3)3
Snatch High Pulls: (90/3)3
Jump Squats: (35/6)3
Bar Twists: (20/6)3

Took a while to get warmed up. By the third set of snatches, got it down.

The bar twists consist of putting a bar on your shoulders and twisting from side to side. Not recommended for non throwers.

I’m starting to feel the effects of all the jumping and sprinting I’ve been doing. Felt more explosive in the throws this weekend and the distances reflect this. Usually the knees are the first to go when I overdo these, but so far so good.

5/13 Lifting

Cleans: 65/2, 77.5/2, 90/2, (95/2)3
Jerks: 65/2, 77.5/2, 90/2, (95/2)3
Front Squats: (102.5/3)3
Step Ups with Jump: (BW+10/6)3
Clean Dead Lifts: (120/5)3
Push Press: (67.5/3)3

Did the front squats and step ups together, a set of fronts squats, followed immediately by a set of step ups. This made the step ups hard, but oddly enough, made the front squats easier.

5/14 Lifting

Snatch: 60/2, 67.5/2, 75/2, (80/2)3
Squats: (105/3)3 interspersed with
Box Jumps: 20" box (BW+40lbs/6)3 legs got to burning a bit towards the end of each set
Snatch Dead Lifts: (105/5)3
Bench: (80/3)3

Feeling better and better each day.

Two days in a row of oly stuff! Your recovery ability is astounding!
