Throwing Heavy Stuff Far

Hel, I knew Jim Wentenhal was good, but hearing that he does it off of two turns is even more amazing. I’d love to see him throw, especially that 56 pounder. I would probably laugh. That seems to be my reaction when I see people do impossible things.

12/12

Clean and Jerk: 62.5/2, 75/2, 87.5/2, (100/2)2
Front Squat: 100/2, (110/3)2
Press: 56/3, (64/3)2
Clean High Pulls: (112.5/3)2

A little tired from all the snatches yesterday, but overall not bad. Did hang cleans again. They felt slightly better timed than on Tuesday, but I’ll have to wait for the video analysis to see for sure.

Carl, thanks for the info on your weight throw. I’m 100kgs and consider myself small for a weight thrower and even smaller for super weight.

Carl when I arrived in Boston last year (I’m from Oz - the Baz Laurhman, Nicole Kidman Oz ) the first guy I met from the meet was getting into my lift. About 6’ 1"
and 100kgs and I said what div you throw in. Answer, no I’m a hurlder. Knew then it was going to be tough. (got 3rd with 56 @ 7.08,). Man you are small…

I have moved up from 94kgs when I started this about 4 years ago telling my wife, hey the extra weight has gotta help. Where is my excuse now.

On two turns, I find I can really nail a delivery every time, but on three it is sometimes once a workout that I really get a good block.

Hel320, big Jim W. was very helpful to me last year, made me feel very welcome (as did Rich, and others) he squats 700lbs inc chains, benches over 400 with shirt, and does high pulls to lower chest with 400.

Think two turns is all he needs.

Hel320 I am only 1/3 the way through your log, will arrive there in real time soon.

Last set of clean and jerks. Timing and catch depth was slightly better this time.

Carl what I have noticed is that your technique, the crucial parts therof appear better as the weight progresses.

Not specifically referring to the above.

As the heavier weights call upon the stronger muscles in the chain, your pull appears more fluid (okay not as explosive) but smoother.

What appears to be minor technical flaws start to disappear as the weight moves up.

When are you scheduled to take your shot at the 115+ for the snatch?

Terry, about those Big Jim W. weights, if I do ever see him in person, I hope he understands. I think I will be laughing until my sides hurt.

I hadn’t noticed that about the technique. I’ll have to go back over the videos to see what you are talking about.

I’ll be trying for the snatch record at Masters Nationals which are April 3rd-5th.

April is right around the corner; be nice to do it in the gym a couple of times, then shoot for a little more at the contest, possible???

QT, here’s the plan. I’m supposed to test 1rm next week. Hopefully it comes out as 110+. I have a qualifying meet on January 3rd where I plan on 105, 111, 115 for snatch attempts. I’m usually good for a little more in contests than in training. That leaves 13 weeks to the Masters, time enough for one more 12 week cycle and a week of contest prep.

I’m going to change a few things for the next cycle, but I’m not decided on exactly what I’ll be doing yet. If training goes according to plan, I should be hitting 115+ the week before the contest. Then 110, 116, 120 for attempts at nationals. That gives a little leeway in case I miss one of the first two attempts.

Best of luck Carl, you make that look so easy.

Thank you dz.

This week work up to 100%, then later test 1rm and 2rm.

12/15
Snatch: 52.5/2, 63/2, 74/2, 85/1, 90/1, (95,1 100/1, 105/1)2, 110/0
Squat: 100/3, 115/3, 127.5/3, 134/2, (140/2)2
Bench: 70/3, 80/3, 90/3, 95/2, (100/2)2
Snatch High Pulls: (116/3)3

Came close on the 110 snatch, just a tad in front. Last set of squats and bench were very hard. Last rep on the bench was one of those very rare (for me) grind it out 5 second lifts.

Its snowing like crazy here, 2 feet since last night and still coming down hard.

Skipped Tuesday’s workout. My lower back felt tweaky and I was feeling tired overall. Must be the concert Saturday night catching up to me. My wife says we just need more practice, but I think the days of staying up till 1:30 in the morning and not missing a beat are long behind me. I’m not sure yet if I will just skip that workout entirely, or start this weeks planned workouts over again starting with today. Anyway:

12/17

Snatch: 52.5/2, 63/2, 74/2, 85/1, 90/0!, 95/0!, 95/1, 100/1, 105/1, 107.5/1, 110/0, 110/1
Squat: 100/3, 115/3, 127.5/3, 134/2, 140/2, 142.5/1
Bench: 70/3, 80/3, 90/3, 95/2, 100/2

Out of time.

New prs
Snatch 107.5, 110 had to take a step forward to save it.
Squat 140/2, ties what I did Monday. Was hoping for 142.5/2. Second rep was close, but I would have had to break form to get it up.
Bench 100/2. Ties what I did Monday. 102.5 was out of the question.

Was that 110kg snatch a PR?
In any case, congradulations! I imagine it would be tough to go back and complete a max lift when you miss it the first attempt, I know it is for other lifts.
I’ve been keeping an eye on your progress for a few weeks since I found this thread, I find it very encouraging and motivating, thanks.

Yes the 110 is a pr, at least its the most I’ve done in 4.5 years. At my age, if I haven’t done it in a year, I count it as a pr.

Actually, the second attempt was easier. The first one was high enough, but out front. I just kept the weight as close as I could on the second and it went right up.

Thanks for reading.

By the way, you made a comment at the top of this page “grease me up woman.” what the heck is that? I’m not familiar with the reference.

That had me confused as well…

Sorry about that Carl, it was in reference to another posters display pic. Its a quote of grounds keeper willie from the simpsons.

Edit: That post was from a few pages back, here is the pic

Pic didn’t work

Carl, unfriggin beleivable.

5.5kgs to go…

How does the recovery feel, on the 110 kg ( I ask because I would not call you a big squatter. But if you can get out of the bottom, it is all you need…)

A few pages ago, it looked like you may stall out a little short, but …

and now we have to deal with complacency…
guess that 120 comp 3rd attempt is starting to look better… maybe 125kg …after all this work, you want to put it where it will be safe for a while…

and then you can get back to throwing…

again seriously congrats…

Doyle, nothing to be sorry about, I just didn’t know where it came from. I thought is was refering to some TV show, but I don’t have TV, so I didn’t know which one.

Here’s the 107.5 snatch.

And here’s the 110. Sorry about the lighting, Its snowing again and the choice was too dark to see anything using natural lighting or this. At least you can see it.

Edit: If its still not showing up in the morning, I’ll repost it.
