The Art of Warming Up

What is the point of even talking about it if your mind is made up? Sheesh people won’t even listen to the most famous fitness guru who ever lived because your own “common sense” overrides it. At one time common sense was that bloodletting was good and the earth was flat. I will grant you that some birds do stretch hence the phrase “stretch your wings”, but they are not mammals.

You should read his book “Live Young Forever”, it is really good.
Hungry Trolls… here is a snack: Jack =/= Bodybuilder

Whatever I’m done with this thread I can only repeat the same information so many times…off to AC suckas

Being a 46 ex-colligate athlete who still likes to train, warming up is common sense. I just had shoulder surgery last december and now my warm ups are even longer but limiting the risk of injury is worth the extra time.

Oh and my bullmastiff likes to walk before he runs and he is an animal. Does that count as warming up?

Now that you have provided an animal anecdote I think we can consider this thread solved.

this could be the start of something epic. its been awhile since we’ve had a really epic troll thread.

As Jack Lalanne once said…Do lions stretch before chasing down a gazelle? Nope.

He knew more than any of you.

And that is why I don’t waste my time w/ that p*y-a** bull-s
Out of curiosity, what are your personal records/goals like? And what’s your training schedule?

He kind of didn’t lift heavyass weights, though. His feats of “strength” were in the water, and not really feats of strength as much as feats of endurance/cardio/skill. From what I can tell, his general training consisted of circuit training until failure, and then after 90min of that he did a lot of conditioning work. Sure, he was probably strong, but that doesn’t make him a strength/power representative. Jay Cutler is pretty strong too.

Who said anything about stretching?
He never warmed up man, its a medical fact
Sounds like just a regular fact to me

In reality, you’re taking the opinion of one man and telling me that is stands over the countless opinions of others who are well versed in training as well.

One other aspect that you’re forgetting to remember is that we’re not lions.

His quote is actually pretty ridiculous, to be honest. Just because he was a fitness great, that doesn’t make EVERYTHING he says true!
Tell me how many of those others “well versed in training” will be able to tow 70 boats 1.5 miles at age 70 while handcuffed. It’s a physical fact that Jack did that without warming up. If you guys wanna waste 45 minutes stretching and warming up before lifting I suggest you join Curves and start a website called e-nation.
Once again, who said anything about stretching and 45 minutes of warming up? My post talks about a brief sequence of progressive weight warm up sets that takes very little time. If you want to have a legitimate discussion, than keep the facts straight and don’t exaggerate.

As for Jack’s comment; I don’t care if he pulled 1000 boats, he’s still able to be wrong.

Like I said before, his comment is ridiculous, as we’re not lions. On top of that, unless the lion is squatting in a power rack, I don’t care that he doesn’t warm up. Comparing a quick cardio burst to heavy resistance training is also ridiculous. It seems like you really like him, but don’t let that blind you to the fact that not every single word that he spoke was right. Seriously, you’re making yourself sound pretty off base.
I am keeping the facts straight, the guy lifted into his 90s and didn’t have any joint problems. We’re not lions, what’s your point? Our muscles work the same way. I’m not the off base one arguing with Jack. Arnold Schwarzenegger once stated, “That Jack LaLanne’s an animal!,” after LaLanne, at 54, beat a 21-year-old Schwarzenegger “badly” in an informal contest.
Dude what is up with you? You are NOT keeping facts straight. Again, no one is talking about stretching for 45 minutes. This is about warming up or “ramping”. LaLanne was to a large extent an endurance athlete, not someone who set strength records. His attitudes are actually quite dated.

I’m not sure whats going on in this thread, but I though I would share some videos of lions stretching. gir : lion king streching his muscles - YouTube

I enjoyed the lion videos immensly. I have some vids of lovely owls I’m hoping to contribute at some relevant time.

I’ll be damned, I guess old Jack was wrong

Still, you guys are crazy for writing him off as just an endurance athlete. Show me a marathon runner who is jacked like him. In fact, the expression “jacked” came from jack lalanne. He beat arnold in informal competitions. You don’t think being able to do 1000 pull ups is a sign of strength?

The rest of this thread is now irrelavent.

The max ot warmup IMO is the best one, i use it or something close all the time

I think I’m going to start doing those lion stretches actually. I have a tree in the backyard which would be pretty much perfect

My cat stretches all the time. Especially in the mornings, as Im doing agile 8.
