It’s like the differnce in doing a full ROM bench press verses doing a 2 or 3 board press.

Seems, I am the tallest guy again.
I am 6?10
220 lbs
I am currently doing single leg stuff instead of squats and deads which seems to work fairly well. Just started with good mornings, which apparently help surprisingly well with building my hams.
Still need lots of work for my lower back, since this is my weakest part and always gives me problems when lifting heavy
Great thread by the way

Anyone in a similar situation to me?
I am 6’4, but have a wingspan of 6’1. So my arms are still kind of long, but relatively short for my height. Try deadlifting being built like THAT! Plus I have a pretty long torso. I absolutely love dealifting, but it is difficult to do and keep my back flat. Sometimes I think my back is flat, but it is actually rounding a bit at the lowest part of my back. I feel that after the set is done, trust me on that.
Is this shorter wingspan beneficial in the bench?[/quote]
I’d like to say ‘yes’, but 6’1 wingspan may still be considered fairly long. It is definately better for the bench press than it is for the deadlift.
Speaking of the bench press. There is something about the flat BB bench press that just doesn’t feel “right”. Is this a tall guy thing that anyone else has noticed?
I’m 6’6" and could very easily be 300 pounds… I have to keep my weight around 260 for sport related reasons but I don’t find being tall as a very big disadvantage… deadlift, squat or bench… or any other movement… in the sports world, tall guys dominate.
6ft 3in 242lbs
I focus on stretching after every workout and every night. I also do heavy ab work after every workout. I focus on legs the most. Main lifts are squats, deadlifts, clean and jerk, snatch drop snatch, single legged stepups on high box very strict, one legged squats (back leg raised), curls, skull crushers, glute ham raises, bent rows, bent over flys, lateral raises.
When I started doing more deadlifts and bent over rows I started gaining weight. I also eat like a lion! Eat, Eat, Eat. I eat enough protein, lots of veggies. Between meals I eat fruit, and have protein shakes with cream or olive oil mixed in. I used to think I ate a ton of calories until I wrote it down one day. Then I realized I don’t get near enough calories.
I do full rang of motion squats ass to grass. I drop down all the way in cleans. I work the shit out of my hammies and back. I also ensure I have good posture. The little things matter. Don’t use straps, big forearms make you look much bigger in a t-shirt. a big upper back and thick spinal erectors make you powerful. You must work the shit out of your abs if you work your back a lot. Otherwise your back will hurt all the time. Use good posture! This will also make your back hurt alot. I was in a car accident and really jacked my upper back up. It hurts like hell everyday and I’m going on 5 years now. I can deadlift 495, not great but somewhat respectable. That is all I can say. Look up Jon Doyle’s “Unbreakable Abs” this will help. I also use John Davies “Pink” video for streatching. This has helped a lot. Heavy side bends! Saxon bends, some of the lifts of the old time strongmen help.
Just remember the World’s Strongest Man contest has what one short guy in Mark Phillipi. The rest are 6ft3in to 6ft8in or something. Those guys are big and strong as fuck. Maybe not natural, but I am to this point. Enough rambling. I don’t make excuses in life, I ram the shit out of obsticles (intelligently of course).
I’m 6-4 195. I started weightlifting at 6-4 163 about 8 years ago. I gained nothing the first 5 or so years, but did get a little stronger/ “more cut”. When I found Berardi’s web site I made strides.
I think for tall guys, compound movements are best. As others have said, it can be slow going to make gains / increases maxes, but that’s what you have to do, I think.
To echo another thought, it is funny that I’ve put on over 30 pounds and people are just now starting to notice!
That sounds like me, 6-4 180 in high school. When I first started training, it was from tips of bodybuilders. Now, at 37 and 260, I focus more on powerlifting movements. Arms have always been my strong point, so I don’t train them much. I LOVE to squat (nailed 385 for a triple two days ago), but my bench is fairly weak(310 for triples). I dont worry about “nutrition” per se, because I like getting bigger not “prettier”. But, that’s just me:-)

Man, I wish I didn’t have to worry about nutrition. If I slack off at all, I either gain nothing or actually lose weight (if I’m training hard). That’s where Berardi’s been a big help to me. I actually had to work up to eating enough calories to gain, just like slowly adding weight to increase a lift. But, now I eat a ton more than I used to without trying as hard. Of course, I’m a little bigger, so I have to just to maintain.
Oh, and no matter what I do, I just keep getting prettier. I want to be a monster instead! HA

Nice work. Any chance of a future article based on this interview?

Let me rephrase that nutrition statement of mine: I don’t count calories and carbs. I try to eat on the healthy-side, but find myself eating meat-n-potatoes more that grilled chicken and veggies or fish. And, sometimes I wish I could stop eating, but I gotta fuel the engine to grow. Also, I will not comment on the pretty part. LOL.

Thanks for the info Eric. Was your side down for a day or two? I put a few banners of T-Nation contributors on my Myspace page a few days ago. However, at the time I could not reach your page to “borrow” any images.
What’s the wingspan on some of you agromaniacs?
I’m 6’4 with ~6’6 armspan. I’m just curious to see how big of a difference it is. I’ve noticed that passed about 6’2, there seems to be greater variation in wingspan vs. height, even though they are supposed to be about the same, that seems to only apply to people ~6’0 or less.
A friend of mine has a damn near 6’10 wingspan and he’s only 6’5. It’s kinda creepy, except he is fairly built(doesn’t look thin) so I guess it balances out… sorta.

6’5" 233, 6’7" wingspan and I’d estimate 13% BF with a pair of Nikes. I’ll confess, between November (when I had an inferior dislocation in my left shoulder twice in two weeks - I’m an idiot for playing bball after the first one) of last year and this June, I’ve been very lazy with my workouts. People that know me call me monkey arms, so I can only imagine what kind of nicknames you’ve got for your friend with those proportions.
I don’t think I fall under the term “tall guy”, but I am 187cm (6’1.75") but a bit oddly my wingspan is 6’4".
It seems a lot of tall guys average about 6’4" has it become the new 6’2", lmao.
I agree with the tall guy has the possibility of becoming more imposing, it’s just much more rare to see truly jacked taller guys. I noticed most bodybuilders and people involved in weightlifting tend to be on the short side, this could be a physcological issue, or the fact that those genetic predispositions work a bit better.
come to think of it, most people involved in weightlifting ARE shorter because they want a physical presence. I’m not sure if it’s just me, but you know you’ve got physical presence when women break the ice for you in a nightclub with lines such as, “wow, you’re tall” (by the way i’m 6’6", 215lbs with a wingspan roughly 6’6") - anyone else get/got that experience? I can only imagine what it’d be like for someone who is jacked and tall in a nightclub, they’d clean up pretty well. Also, tall is supposedly a characteristic that women find attractive so short people workout to make themselves appear bigger ![]()
I hate being short =/ I’m 5’ 4" and I’m hoping to grow at least a few more inches before I’m an adult. Damm my Italian heritage.
well im 6’3.9739999…(repeating ofcourse) - I’d consider myself tall among the general population of Canada. Im a skinny bastard compared to most of you at 180, my physique looks pretty much like Eliteballa’s himself, very low BF, “shapy and defined”, yet lacking the mass. Weight gaining, as everyone already heard, is slow as fuck. Went from 150 to 170 in 3 months tops during my newbie gains, while 170-180 has been A FUCKING STRUGGLE(Im sick of eating, sick of even thinking of food).
Im not bitching however cuz I really do appreciate my genetics and I can tell you us tall guys have life “easier” in general then shorter guys. I get treated better everywhere, people smile at me, girls fucking love me lol. I do take attention of how poeple interact/treat each other, and let me tell you, on first impression us tall guys get treated much better then short ones…I used to work at a very busy fast-food store for close to 2 years, and short and medium sized guys get so much more shit on daily basis. From both customers and co-workers/management. I get more respect(from anyone, from your average “gangsta” to a random hot ass bitch) simply based on my size. I get tipped more, lol.
My metabolism is super fast(which is playing agaisnt me in a way) but gives allowance for a junk food. (If i felt I was slacking off, 6 hashbrowns are ez to swallow, =1020 calories right there). I know its not wise, but while working there you really have no choice… either eat while nobody is looking or wait an hour till your break. Normally I get hungry within 1-1.5 hours after a ~800 calorie meals, if its low on fat and mostly protein/carbs. 6-pack is more of a slap in the face, meaning im not calorically satisfied. Id rather grow good layer of fat covering around my waste, then at least Id be certain that I eat enough.
Small joints combined with long limbs give the illusion of being hyooooge. My wrist joints are TINY. while elbow and forearm are relatively thick… whenever I roll my sleeves up people stare
Same for my body, very tiny waist, + moderately developed back/traps/shoulders, making my back(when clothed) look very decent. Even in a winter coat V-shape is somewhat discernable.
dont take any of this as bragging lol, like I said I know my place at 180.
Btw anyone else is much more of a puller than a pusher ? When I was just starting out, I could do 5 chinups, yet only 1.5 dips ? I still find my push/pull ratio is skewed towards the pull, even tho I put an emphasis on bench/dips.
I’m 6’5" at 225 pounds and I can never get more then 5 pullups but I’ll dip all day long. And my wingspan is roughly 6’8".
Overall I agree with a lot of the posts on here, looking big is much harder being a tall ecto (some tall guys don’t find it hard to gain weight), but once you get big it’s easy to look monstrous. I, unfortunately, am still working on it.

nvm
A bump for the tall guy thread
6’8" here, at around 210.
I currently do bench presses, squats, overhead presses and rows, with some pull-ups and sit-ups mixed in.
I don’t have any problem with squatting, and from what I’ve heard, the leg press is a poor replacement.
I’ve tried deadlifting but I find that my legs get in the way.
According to the posts in this thread, the dead lift is the exercise tall people are relatively good at? Well, I might just have to add it to my regimen then.
