Fact of this argument is, the OP wasn’t begging for advice on what he could use to help his judo.
He was asking if he could maintain strength gains that he had achieved and obviously likes, while he was experimenting with martial arts. Now, you obviously don’t know shit about achieving or keeping strength gains. So why are you even commenting?
I have the same opinions on you too, you seem like someone who does train fighting but is using the wrong tools for your conditioning.
That’s fuckin great. You seem like someone who’s never seen the inside of a gym and shouldn’t be saying shit about it. [/quote]
The only way I could prove my methods are more effective is by posting a picture of my chiselled body! It would suit the forum, most people have pictures of themselves as their avatars.
I’m no expert but I think weightlifting sessions should be devoted to increasing general strength (where squats, deadlifts, bench press, etc. are useful). Sure you should do sports-specific work but the OP was asking about STRENGTH training. Just because you do a complex with a barbell doesn’t make it strength training. Swinging a sledgehammer is great but it’s not strength training. My $0.02. That is all.

“Back in the games, my maximum bench press was 510. I can furl 220 pounds. squat 700 to 800 pounds, depending on the day-and depending on the spotters.” —Ricardo Blas Jr.,Olympic judo competitor. Quoted in esquire magazine, march 09. THE END

All fighters used to bench press because it is the common thing to do, but guess what, they don’t do it any more.

Omg. This guy is like the “chicken and tuna” of the combat sports thread.

All I can say is all the top MMA strength and conditioning coaches do not have their fighters do bench presses. I am not aware of the exact reasoning but I guess it is because it is an isolation exercise and you are never going to be laying flat on your back pushing your hands up unless you want to get armbarred.

Fucking BULLSHIT. Fucking Machida does the Bench press, GSP does the Bench press. Every exercise in your toolbox doesn’t have to mimic the shit you do in a fight. I’ve never had to press anything overhead, but the OH press has helped tremendously in my grappling strength. You’re pulling shit out of your ass.

I know every exercise doesnt have to mimick exactly what you are doing. I never said that once.
And show me GSP doing a bench press with his new strength and conditioning coach Justin Chambers, where did you get the info he does this?
Machida may do a bench press in his workouts I dont know.

"These days, St-Pierre can do a chinup with 120 pounds around his waist. He can lift 120-pound dumbbells for bench presses and front squat 270 pounds. Chaimberg says St-Pierre also put four inches on his vertical jump, which is now at a staggering 40 inches. Not bad for a 188-pounder who cuts down to 170 for fights. “His body fat is around 5%,” says Chaimberg. “He builds a pound of muscle every two to three months.”
Hmm…
so he bench presses and squats… doesn’t he know those things are bad for you???

No, but you did say this: “it is an isolation exercise and you are never going to be laying flat on your back pushing your hands up unless you want to get armbarred.”
By saying such things, you are insinuating that the only way that strength would benefit you is if you were in the exact position of the lift. Which is false.
Anderson Silva bench presses and so does Machida. I’ve seen video footage of both, one of Anderson Silva on a smith machine (in his all access show), and one of Machida doing two plates (on a countdown show before his fight with Rashad). Those two are probably two of the biggest names in MMA and both are in excellent condition for fighting.
GSP does the dumbbell bench, there’s plenty of video of this on youtube too.

Yes you are correct there, and thats not what I meant anyway so I didnt mean it to sound like that.
