Squatting

6’2 190. I recently started working out again, did some squats last week here in Russia from 90 to 135 lbs. No problem. Today I did 5x5 ~146 lbs, and my lower back hurts a little. Once I asked about my from, and one of the regulars told me I could go a little lower, but otherwise it looks fine.

I first learned how to squat when I wrestled and took a weight lifting course in an American high school. Before that I had little experience with lifting, but was in fairly good shape because of gymnastics (I know). Everybody had to squat, even 14 year old freshmen who just started out. I mention this because I read somewhere on the net that you need to strengthen your thighs/ass/lower back first before attempting squats, but we started right away. With low weight, but still. Our teacher was some Schwarzenegger lookalike who paid great attention to our form. I think I maxed out at 225 or sth, and never had any problems. AFAIK, noone else did either.

A year and a half or so ago I squatted more regularly in Holland, and my back hurt slightly, but I attributed it to not having squatted in a while. I asked both trainers at the gym and a regular, and all said my form was correct. They suggested stretching, getting a good warmup etc., which kind of worked. So I continued and got bacl up to 170 or 180 pounds, can’t remember. But my lower back started to hurt really bad to the point where I had trouble walking and saw a docter and fysiotherapist. The fysiotherapist told me to do exercises like bend forward ten times until the pain disappears, it should take three months or so. It took five days and I was fine, but decided to stop squatting.

It hurts only a little. My plan of action for now is to go back to an even lower weight and get the form down pat, and move back up. But AFAIK, I already do it right.

What could possibly be wrong with my squat that is easily overlooked by people watching me do it, and cause this pain?

had the same problem. This article helped.

If everybody keeps telling you your form is ok, it probably is.

Perhaps you should strengthen your lower back with good mornings. Start with low weights and gradually work it up.
