Squat & Lunges on the Same Day?

hey there, is there any problem if i squat and did lunges on the same day?

Thats is a good workout, I love to do squats and lunges the same day.

You might end up with big, strong legs!

I don’t see why that would be a problem though. 8^)

…and who would want that to happen? lol

That may make a good leg workout, but as a beginner, still trying to raise the weight on every squat session, and that’s 3 times a week, I could not keep it up with lunges in the mix. So, it’s all relative. I suppose it depends on what else is the op doing in the gym.

I agree. When I’m done with my squats, I’m done. I’m spent. If you still have gas in the tank then go for it. Lunges are fantastic and are often overlooked when training legs. henry, are you doing Rippetoe or a version of 5x5?

and that what am looking for…

cuz yesterday, after i finish doing my squat and lunges, the trainer came to me and said “it’s not a good idea to do both of them on the same day, cuz its going to effect the lower back”… and he stopped me from doing any leg exercise after that. saying the 2 exercises were enough

WHAT!?!?! You tell That Trainer I said to eat a dick!!! If doing squats and lunges on the same day hurts his back you tell him he need to learn how to squat w/o hurting his back.

Now granted when I do Squats my back will get “tight” for about 30min after but by the time Im done with leg ext. its fine. But “tight” is not the same thing as “hurt”!!

…pussy ass trainer…tell him to go help some one on the eliptcal

O Im sry It didnt say “hurt” thats just what I took from it. But you can still tell him I said eat a dick

Your trainer is right. Doing squats and lunges will “affect” your lower back. In fact, it will “affect” your lower back so much that you may a lot of lower back problems. This “affect” is known as strength. Tell him to not be afraid.

that trainer is a moron. I’d like to hear how he correlates squats then lunges to lower back… More importantly how does doing leg work, in his mind effect your lower back?

Squat with a straight back = no problem.

I never met a trainer that dumb. He couldnt be any more wrong. When i was a trainer i had my clients doing both exercises and they got great results.

I’m on 5x5 Starting Strength, on the 5th week now that I saw references to on this forum. Before that I did Waterbury’s TBT for total of 10-12 weeks, and before that some make shift things. In any case, like this program a lot, making good progress and finally getting to feel what it takes to get where I want to be.

I do Starting Strength as well, but with 3x5. You must be doing a variation because the original is 3x5. In any case, you’re getting great results and I’m getting great results. I’m in the fifth week as well and loving it.

If you do a HEAVY set of squats, then you’ll know how it affects your lower back.

I do squats and lunges back to back all the time and I’ve never had a problem. Its just another story of an ill-informed / ill-experienced trainer.

I don’t do squats and lunges the same day, but I put them both in my 16 yr old daughter’s program. This morning I did 3 sets of DB Snatches, 5 sets of squats, 5 sets of RDLs, 2 sets Leg Press, 2 sets calf raises and 2 sets farmer’s walk.

It’s a case of building up enough of a stimulus to achieve an adaptation and your trainer is a dork.
