Hello T-Nation
I’d like to introduce myself - I’m 24, and have been training in the martial arts for 5 years.
I have always been that really skinny guy - the one who kinda looked sickly…until I started doing martial arts. I put on about 12 pounds the first 2 years, and have kinda topped out now. I weigh about 155lbs. I’m 5’9"
I recently started reading T-Nation out of the sheer respect for the people who can torture themselves. I also read other things involving the human body and pushing its limits. Plus the figure competitor chicks are HOT!
Anyways these are a few pics of me as I sit, at my highest body fat % and weight ever.
Future goals:
Add some weight to my frame, in good functional muscle. Mostly in my legs, and my CALVES
I dont want to loose any of the speed I have gained in my martial arts, but I definitely need to strengthen up my wheels.
The things I am required to do at my level, are way beyond what my legs can handle.
Any help, support, advice would be greatly appreciated!
heh - as far as a program goes - I wouldnt know where to look, so thanks for the reccomendation
Ive only been in the gym a few times, and that is so I can start learning proper form for certain things. I’m getting used to the deadlift and box squats. I hear those are probably the best leg and overall body workouts
I’ve started some standing and sitting type calf raises too, which are pretty brutal.
I eat clean enough, only a little “bad” food, but that will never change. One thing I’m not used to is my jaw being sore, the past 2 weeks just learning these weight lifting moves has made me SO HUNGRY
I post P90X workouts “Need for Speed” on the “over thirty-five lifters” I think it might be something of interest to you. For size and muscle mass in the legs, others would be better at helping you there. Welcome and the best of luck, stay strong.

Thanks for the welcome!
Dude if I look as good as you when I’m your age I’m going to be a very happy man. Hell I’m 24 and if I looked like you now I’d be a happy man! hahaha
I’ve never heard of p90x workouts - unless you mean that guy that sells em infomercial-wise…

Thats the guy. The workouts are intense and I will have all of them posted by the end of Feb. My legs are thin like yours. I can press and push a lot of weight but the size won’t come on. Working on a routine with help from the great guys here on T-Nation. Don’t want huge but some size would be nice. Good luck, stay strong, this is for life!

looking at your body type you have ALOT of potential,
just get on a dece program and you’ll be fine[/quote]
Would you recommend anything in particular? The riptoe starting strength has been mentioned… But looking at the program it seems too easy/basic. I’m no stranger to hard work…so that is not going to be an issue.
I do know that posting these pics has made me quite aware of myself, it makes you realize the truth not just what your mind percieves!
I can’t wait to post some pics in a month or two and see some progress!

I can move some pretty good weight around too - I look so skinny and can move quite a bit for my size. As soon as I know some numbers, e.g. deadlift bench ect, I am going to pos those as well
These p90x workouts seem pretty intense…a lot more muscle endurance is emphasized, in bodyweight/low weight situations. I can imigine that your legs are pretty skinny, but the power they DO have just keeps coming and coming all day long… right?
hahaha yes this sounds VERY simple, VERY hard, and VERY rewarding. But really does anyone want to drink a gallon of milk a day?? I would be sick!
there is something to be said about the amount of food. Its rediculous how hungry I am all the time, even with only 2 weeks of weight training under my belt. If I started tracking my calories I’m sure I’m getting probably 500 more a day in already…
You want to gain mass in your legs? That’s great because there are a lot of people who try to avoid leg work and mass gains at all costs, so good job there. You might want to check out West Side For Skinny Bastards. It’s a great program for gaining mass and the newer one’s allow for speed training days. Try WSFSB 3. Also, a gallon of milk a day might sound like a lot, but once you actually try to do it it’s easier than you’d think, and you will definitely benefit from it.

It may seem easy but the key is in the progressively heavier weights. Whether your new to training, or new to free weights or getting back into lifting, it’s a great program. Yes it’s simple but not easy. Very few exercises, but they do work the entire body and with adequate eating there is no better mass building program.

Hmmm I suppose I did not look at it that way - my mind is still in martial arts I guess…we get really complicated with things, when sometimes we really should just punch a fool in the face.
Thank you for you insight! By the way Stu - you are RIPPED man! holy cow!
Tuei, I suggest you finish Rippetoe’s Starting Strength before you go onto WS4SB3 because the overall workload you will be working with will be much higher if you do one then the other. The mass gains will therefore be larger. Not only this, but Rippetoe’s is NOT as simple as you may think. You may only START with the Dead, Squat and Bench, but if you read
you will realise you can impliment much higher volume if you think you are at that level.
Personally, I tell you not to do the Accessory excercises until 3-4 weeks into the program.
So yeah.
Step 1 - Rippetoe’s
Step 2 - WS4SB3
As for milk, just drink milk instead of water or softdrink, you will be suprised how thirsty you get and how much you go through if you do that. I got through 2L of milk on my first day doing that. You don’t have to drink a gallon straight off, build up to it and let your stomach adjust.
