Sleep or Exersice: What's More Important?

hi folks…

I’ve been pondering this for a while now…

but on nights when I have insomnia, and only get about 5 hours sleep…what should I do the next day 1)skip the workout and try to goto sleep earlier? or 2) workout anyway, even if it’s only 50% effort?

thanks for the help!

Niether. Insomnia is NOT a safe or healthy way to live your life, plain and simple. Trust me, I have it. Luckily I have my own medicine that helps me get through it.

As much as I hate generation RX, you really ought to see a doctor, and get some sort of medicine to help you out.

Or, you could always try Z-12, the brand new and cutting-edge supplement sold exclusively from Biotest!

Thanks SSC…

yeah…I’m not sure this is a medical condition, or just a ‘sometimes’ thing.

Well, at this present moment, it’s because I’ve just returned from a 2-week trip to England, and I’m still in Jet-lag mode (day 2 of being home)…so I was wondering if I should hit the gym according to my pre-holiday schedule, or wait out the jet lag for a week until I’m back to normal time.

thanks!

I routinely only get 5 hours of sleep. On some of those “nights” I will train and others I won’t. How long long have you been dealing with this? How many nights a week are you sleeping 5 hours or less?

Sleep is just indicative of a caffeine defficiency. Nothing serious to be concerned about.

Seriously though, I have trouble sleeping sometimes, but always figure that if the body gets worn down enough (tired), you’ll have no choice but to doze off. With that said, sometimes your workouts need to be shorter simply because you’re not recovering from them. Lack of sleep is just one reason. The suggestion to see a doctor certainly isn’t a bad one.

SSC, what are you taking (if I may get personal).

Ambien sucked, I got into trouble with e-mails and late-night phone calls when I was on it.

Now that I’m married, I could really get in trouble!

I was wondering about Lunesta but I’m leary for the same reasons.

To the OP, I usually never miss a workout due to lack of sleep. I just try to catch up when I can.

I work out in the morning for football (as a team), and sometimes it takes me so long to get to sleep, I get only 6 hours of sleep. I still go balls to the wall, and I feel great afterwards. But, couple hours later, I feel like I can sleep 10 hours during the day. I don’t know how much the lack of sleep is affecting me, but for now, I do not really see much of a difference. Still, I do agree that you should shorten in a little just so your body isn’t tired to much.

Anyways, every now and then, too little sleep is not much of a problem, but if it’s continuous, I would worry about overtraining. Derek is right though, if these things are sporadic, I wouldn’t miss one workout.

i don’t lift unless i get a full nights sleep prior to training. im sure we’ve all worked out after nights of little or no sleep–usually resulting in “spinning your wheels” at the gym

I didn’t have the same side effects with Lunesta that I did with Ambien. That said, I typically only have 5-6 hrs to sleep during the week so I prefer Sonata as it has a shorter life. It lasts 4 hours (vs. 8 for Lunesta/Ambien) and when I wake up I actually feel refreshed. No negative side effects to speak of.

Exercise is more important. If you need sleep, then you’ll fall asleep if you try.

Believe it or not sleeping is like a skill you can master. With practice, you can lower your body’s need for sleep.

I can sleep within 30 seconds to 5 minutes during my scheduled sleeping times.

By the way. I used to be an insomniac during my teen age years.

Yeah, sorry man, I kept it vague for a reason. A few hours before sleep, 2-3, I like to intake a little bit of Vitamin-W into my lungs. I went to the doctor about my insomnia and he recognized it, but didn’t have money at the time for any pharmeceudical (sp?) medicine.

After a while, I found out how much it can actually cost, and realized that mary jane puts me to sleep better than any artificial drug created. I know a lot of people aren’t down with the cannabis, or are looking for a better night’s sleep legally.

For many people, it doesn’t get them drowsy. This may because they’re either smoking shitty stuff, or it reacts different with them.

Anyway, sorry I couldn’t be of more help.

Sleep can be difficult for me too at times - depression and anxiety - severe cases of both (lucky me) but personally I found that by trashing myself on heavy days with a thorough hard workout, sometimes over 2 hours, then I’ll fall asleep early in the evening and not wake up until 12 hours later.

I punish myself in the gym and sleep is my reward - doesn’t always work though.

That’s ok, thanks man.

Yeah, MJ isn’t exactly what I was looking for!

I’ve worked out many times with just 5 hours anything much less then that be tough. My average night is 6-7 so 5 isn’t that bad. Drink a Spike Shooter and get to work.

Why do you avoid naps?

I used to have the same problem, lack of sleep interfered not just with the gym, but just about everything in my life. I had the hardest time falling asleep, ever since I was a kid. This is what I did to help and now I am generally asleep within 45-60 minutes of getting in bed.

  1. I try to plan my workouts for as early in my day as possible.

  2. I try to prioritize the things that I need to take care of in the week during the day so that I don’t think about those things while I lay in bed.

  3. I take ZMA, (previously just the minerals separately) about 1hr before hand.

  4. I never do anything in the bedroom unless it is to sleep…or if my wife is involved.

  5. Referring to number 2…I always, and that is a big always, read some type of lame ass fiction novel while in bed to make sure that my mind is off any “real world” problems.

I used to take ambian and some other yellow sleeping pill that I don’t remember the name of and this way works out much better for me.

So…hope that helps, now get to bed!

Probably to sleep at night. I know if I take a nap I usually stay awake all night.

I think I was made to stay awake longer and then sleep for 12 or so hours. Not go to sleep around 10-12 and get 8 hours of sleep and repeat

I have an insomnia problem; but it gets worst if i dont workout; the workouts actually help me as they unwind me as a lot of my insomnia problem is stress related imo, but for some reason after i workout; the stress is gone or at least manageable from a sleep aspect.

When i dont workout, things can snowball on me as the stress increases which makes me not sleep which makes me not want to workout. Keeping to my routine is important to stopping this snowball effect

2 hours before bed smoke a bowl
hour and a half later down zma
down a shake right before I goto bed

5 minutes later I’m out
wake up before my alarm goes off feeling amazing

nothing else worked for me

that or you could just jack off till you cry yourself to sleep
