just because you have more stamina doesnt make you more intense, that guy that lifts 800 lbs works just as hard as you, but with different goals man. you couldnt lift 800 lbs for a 1rm if your life depended on it

Wrong! It takes more intensity to keep lifting. This is precisely what seperates the best from the rest, & why most people QUIT when it gets heavy, or you muscles ache, or you are winded. He had less intensity than me because, even though his 1 rep max is more than mine… he can’t push harder than me.

If he could he could have kept up with the rest-pause sets. I can lift more total weight than him in 3 minutes. Therefore, I have the more intense workout. If he was intense, I’m sure he could have made it through the sets of deads with my weight.

The only thing we agreed on is that our 1 rep max’s are the same intensity because we both gave it everythingthing we had to preform that 1 rep. The intensity to keep going is a whole new kind of intensity that you probably have not felt yet.

The 3 rep max is not only done 3 times, its done as many times as possible in 3 minutes. I will get 3 on my first lift, then re-rack the bar, take a quick breath or two then go at it again… probably will get 1-2 reps, then keep re-racking and hitting singles until the time is up. The rest taken between lifts will determine your intensity level.

Those that can dig deep will produce the highest total numbers in 3 minutes. Granted my cardio is better, that is a direct result from this type of training “higher intensity”.

If you want to test your intensity, you can try the 1-10 method… hit every rep from 1 to 10 with max weight for that specific rep for 10 consecutives lifts with only enough time to change the weights. I have a tougher version of this that I call “Purgatory”, which goes from 1 to 10 then back to 1 for 100 total reps.

It only requires 1 set for the entire muscle to be trained. You cannot do that until you have practiced a 1-5, then a 1-10 method. This guy never did any of that. He was used to one than done. The combination of heavy weight and time under it is what makes intensity. Not the total weight or the time under it.

I can do a single, big fuckin deal. I can also curl a 5lb dumbbell for a couple of hours, big fuckin deal. The combo is where its at. The most amount of weight and the variable time under it.

So that powerlifter couldn’t give a shit if he can rest-pause for an hour, he only cares about how much he can do for a single.

Do you think Asafa Powell cares about how many times he can sprint 100m, one time after the other, with 5 breaths in between? No, he cares about how fast he can do it once.

Oh, I hear ya. I also agree with most of what you said. I myself like to use most of the powerlifters movements to build muscle… ie Ronnie Coleman. I’m not knocking anybody. The powerlifter is stronger than me. The marathoner has better endurance than me. I sit in the middle somewhere. I’m like the middle weight boxer, I like the combination of the power and speed. this is what makes the elite athlete elite… a la Larry Johnson, Jim Browm, Mike Tyson, even Arnold and Ronnie Coleman were built but strong as a side effect for trying to gain mass.

I prefer to use the hardest way possible to train for better results. Therefore, I do heavy lifts and singles myself… but I rest pause them because I am not in it for strength. I’m in it for periodization or hypertrophy. I agree that my methods are not good for powerlifters building maximal strength.

My methods are strictly for hypertrophy gains. If I wanted strength without size, I would follow a powerlifters resume. I do get the added strength benefit from my training as a side effect but the goal is hypertrophy. This is best acomplished thru periodization and using the most intense routines for certain time frames. The “more work in less time” concept is my whole basis which is just a simple Vince Gironda concept. This includes, pushing thru the pain and past the pain barrier, sucking it up and performing more reps even though winded. These methods would include everything from supersets, dropsets, stripper sets, giant sets, staggerd sets, rest-pause, increased frequency and maximal volume in shorter periods.

The 1-10 method or just a triple drop set with no rest between exercises would be a typical workout for me. I do a lot of heavy lifting for singles but I rest-pause them and will get 6-10 reps with my 3RM weight… again all this follows a Vince Gironda concept “more work in less time”, I’m not inventing anything here. All I’m doing is going with what comes natural… and that is the more work I do and the higher my intensity level is, the greater my results are. Its that simple, the harder I push the easier I gain.

go heavy, i like ur attitude in ur posts usually, and ur trainig method seems to work for u. But to say that a 800lb deadlifter doesnt have the same intensity as u is decieving. He trains in a completely diff way then you. if he actually trained ur style consistently i bet it wouldnt take him long to match ur numbers.
