Ok guys and gals I know a few or your are waiting for this one so enjoy

Todays was comp day. The event was held at Stronghouse Gym in East Melbourne about an hour drive from my house. The athlete briefing was set for 8:30 and comp started at 9:00. I got up around 6:30 had some breakfast and then set off. Arrived with plenty of time, so spent the next 30 mins catching up with the people I know from previous comps.

This was a typical gym car park event but was actually well set out and well run. The organisers had set up two different areas in the car park so they could run two events at the same time.

The first two events were the car pull and the log press. My group had car pull first and would then swap onto log press after. Running the comp this way made it run nice and quick which everyone likes.

So first up was car pull. There isn’t really any warm up for this, so I didn’t do one. I just waited for my turn strapped in and went for it.
I am not the best car puller and always have a little trouble getting my rhythm but I got it moving ok and other than begin a little too upright I has a good run. Well it must have been good because I ended up with 1st place.

Next up was log press, I was a little worried with this given my bicep issue but I decided I would just do a couple of reps and see how it went. This was a rising log on a 10 inch log, - weights were 60 (132lbs) 70 (154 lbs) and 80 (176 lbs), then keep repping the last weight until the 60 sec ran out.

I was pretty nervous for this. I just hadn’t done any cleans in training and figured it would be ugly. I hit the first rep and 60 felt easy, hit the second rep and 70 felt good too. Then it went a bit more like I expected. The clean on 80 wasn’t the best and I spent too much time trying to get set for the press, couldn’t press it and decided to leave it and keep the bicep in one piece. That gave me a last place, one of the other guys only managed 1 rep with 80 so I probably could have tried again and hit it but it wasn’t worth the gamble on my bicep. The guy who won it got 4 reps with the 80 which I know I couldn’t have done today.

Next was car deadlift, I got a bit of a break as it took a little time to set up. I have never done a car deadlift before so made sure to do a couple of warm up reps just to see how my straps felt and how the pull felt.

This was a rising weight deadlift, starting at around 180KG (396 lbs) (car deadlift always seems a bit of a guess when it comes to weight in the hands) and adding 10KG per rep up to 220KG (484 lbs), then repping out for the rest of the minute.

For me being a little shorter meant the handles had a very small range of motion, and I was only getting the full weight at the very top. I had seen other guys get lots of reps here so the strategy was to just set a fast tempo and not stop until the end no matter what. And that worked bloody well.
Got 28 reps, rep 29 was on the buzzer but I did not fully lock it out. Another first place and really happy but completely wrecked. This took a lot out of me, i was laying in the ground with wobbly legs for 5 mins after and they were still vibrating when I was waiting to start the loading event.

Next up was a simple Loading race ,
3 implements loaded into a truck bed.
60kg bag
75kg barrel
100KG bag
I was a bit nervous again in this one as I knew this would be bicep heavy but I needn’t have worried.
60kg bag was an easy pick and run
75KG barrel was straight forward enough albeit a little slow on the pick
100KG pick was pretty solid and no issues with the carry.
Finished Around 23 secs, which was good enough for 2nd place. My bicep was deff feeling the heavy bag after but no damage. I was pretty happy with how well I moved after the deadlift and the the pick with the 100KG bag was solid.

Last was Saxon bar - 4”
This was an odd event, you got 3 attempts. You could pick your weights but if you failed you could not drop back to a lower weight.
I decided to be a bit conservative as I didn’t want to start heavy and miss one.
I Did 30 35 40 which was enough to draw for 1st place in my class, with the other guy maxed at 37.5. Both me and the guy I drew with could have gone heavier here but we both played it safe and shared the points.

So I finished with 3 firsts, 1 second and 1 third. That was good enough to give me a joint first place overall. Given how little training I did for this I am seriously happy with a win, even if I do have to share it. I was predicting a last place for me today, so getting a win was just QUALITY.

28 reps on deadlift is not great for the skin on your hands

Worth it though

You absolutely destroyed that dude! What a fantastic showing.

Going to give some thoughts on the events.

I already love your promoter. This is BRUTAL. It penalizes dudes who are good at leg drive, because their legs are exhausted from the car before the log. This is exactly how I’d run a show, haha.

Good on you to spare the bicep on the log. If you can, I’d strongly recommend investing in a grip shirt. I was opposed to them for SO long, but as a master’s athlete, they make sense from a TRAINING perspective. You save your connective tissue by letting the shirt do the heavy lifting, which means you can spend more time getting in quality reps in training and less time nursing your elbows and biceps.

LOVED that work on the deadlift. Conditioning absolutely was king there.

Another pitch for the grip shirt on the carry medley to spare that bicep, but you were a monster there.
