Silver and Steel

As irony would have it, I hated my teenage years. My twenties too. But I killed it in my thirties!

Ummm… Should I be worried about you?

Boys are just so far behind girls. We just watch and laugh. My wife and I talk about it l, especially when we watch our daughter and her friends are just now starting to try getting boys to notice them. We had no idea girls also didn’t know what they were doing; we just needed them to be in charge. Funny how that’s kind of how it works out

I’m going to go with the classic line of, if I knew then what I know now I could have ruled the world. Lol. It’s probably good that most girls don’t understand the power that they hold. However, I do enjoy watching teenagers try to figure it out. It’s like watching a nature program with the birds doing their little mating dance.

And then both sides go home to cry to their parents about the other party doesn’t notice them or whatever. It’s so cute to watch from a couple decades away!

To set the tone here…I always had a girlfriend. And I kept them. I had a girlfriend all of freshman year of high school. Dated the next one for over two years. She wrecked me and that wrecked my senior year of high school freshman year of college. Met the next girlfriend at the end of freshman year and dated her til fall of junior year. We broke up and I started hanging out with my wife about a month later. Our 18th wedding anniversary is in June.

I’ve lived and seen first-hand that pretty much nothing good comes from dating before your 20s. My 13 year old daughter hasn’t but puberty yet and I couldn’t be happier.

We teach a lesson called The Window Effect to our freshmen. The title is odd, but it describes more of a window of opportunity. 100 years ago people hit puberty around age 13-15 and got married at 16. Now people hit puberty as young as 8 and the average age for marriage is closer to 25. We went from a year or two of sexual urges before marriage to 15 years. That’s terrifying.

If we are being honest, I’m ok with the lack of girlfriend thing. He has had very little distraction from broken hearts and I’m hoping that by the time he gets a girlfriend he will be a bit more on the mature side and more able to deal with everything that comes with it.
