Shrugging Hurts

When I shrug with dumbbells I seem to “pinch” something in my neck. It will feel like a sharp pain for about four days after I shrug. It only happens when I get into challenging weights but shrugging gingerly with 60’s is not going to cut it.

As for my form, I lower my shoulders without going all the way down, and shrug straight and vertical as high as I my ROM lets me without straining. I keep a neutral head position throughout the movement.

Any ideas or input would be appreciated.

Stop shrugging, then go see a physical therapist.
