Safe Trap Work Post AC Separation?

Had a 1st degree AC seperation last summer. Ever since my main recovery i cant seem to do shrugs and cleans without my aggrevatiom in the joint. Any have any advice?

Cleans may be a problem because you are mechanically impinging on the joint on the catch portion of the movement. Additionally, on the shrugs, as you come down, the weight may be pulling you into excessive downward rotation, which will cause the acromion process to slide anteriorly and inferiorly, which make it impinge right on the clavicle. I’d stick with deadlift and high pull variations to give it time to calm down. Probably need to work heavily on scapular stability and get some soft tissue work on pec major and minor, coracobrachialis, and posterior cuff/lat.

Here’s some good follow-up reading:

Good luck!

Hello Eric,

I really hope you can find the time to give me some much needed advice.
I have just started my first position as a strength and conditioning coach of a state run sports organization (not USA).
I am only a level 1 strength coach, but i was hired over better qualified people then myself, to run a new gym in a sports academy.
As part of the position I have to design the gym.

One question… Glute ham raise machines, do I need them?
I read boyle not recommending them, instead preferring slide board hamstring curls and single leg rdl. Gambatta saying glute ham raises don,t develop the hamstrings at both knee and pelvis connections.
But yet i see them in your facility. My athletes are rugby players (15yrs - senior). So what’s required. please?

Also boyle talks about not doing lunges except split lunges. Am i missing something as i believed lunges are important for decelerating (along with eccentric jumps).
also highly functional unilateral exercise for my type pf sport?

Finally i think i read you say before, that you do reverse lunges for people with hip mobility issues rather then progressions with heel elevated squats?
I screened 150 (15 - 17yrs) player with OHS and a lot have this problem (granted other factors are involved here). Just fascinated with what’s most effective correction along with stretching, rolling.
Thank you Eric, your work educates and inspires me every day.

Kind regards
Ant

Hey Eric

Have you checked out sanfranciscocrossfit’s youtube channel? He has unreal stuff on mobility and recovery. What are your thoughts on his methods? Baseball players probably don’t need that kind high-end mobility, but what that stuff be useful for athletes who need more mobility (such as b-ball players, hockey, etc)
