I’m 21 actively play Rugby/Football(soccer) at University standard. Anyway in training on friday (March 13th) I took the ball past another player in soccer who’s tackle was late and I rode over his knee. His knee struck me in the thigh and upon a check-up in hospital they informed me I had a grade 2 muscle contusion/ soft tissue damage.
The doc was foreign and said rest it for a week or two. I have an important game this sunday coming (march 22nd) and was hoping to get some more information about my injury. I also hoping to weight train (upper body) this week… Would it be safe to play on ? I was on crutches over the weekend (which I was informed to use for 3-5 days), yet the pain is now gone and although I intend to use the crutches till wed - to ensure I have rested my leg properly, I do not NEED them to walk. Any advice/information would be much appreciated.
Our head trainer used to say that if you can move at 85-90% of normal then you can play. Where you get into trouble is when you have to start compensating for the pain or muscle weakness by altering your movement patterns.
For contusions, if you are functional and can protect yourself, you should be okay.
The big BUT for deep thigh/quad contusions, if you are hit in the same spot a couple of times, you can develop myositis ossificans. It’s a condition where calcium deposits/bony tissue develops in the hematoma. That can keep you out a long time. Play with a donut pad with hard shell protecting the injury and ice with your knee bent as much as possible.
okay cheers for the advice. I’ve heard about the calcium deposits problem. Its a soccer match I have, Im friends with the manager and will suggest starting on as a sub.
I was led to believe by a friend that as long as I don’t whack the thigh - I can’t really make it worse by running on it. once I can bend my leg properly again. This true ? help much appreciated.

If you can run, stop and jump(functional), you should be okay.
over the last few days I’ve been walking on it without crutches. I have however noticed an awkwardness when going down stairs in my knee, and some bruising around this area. I was wondering if this normal ? I was definitely hit above the knee in the thigh. Although this swelling has resulted in me thinking I may have been misdiagnosed ?
