They already have the papers signed for a RJJ v Silva BOXING match. Silva will do it after he retires from the UFC. He says he’s done after his contract is up. He says he wants to box RJJ for himself. I guess to see how he stacks up, more of a competitive/respect thing.

LOL. Amen. Only people I talk boxing with anymore are my Boricuas. Nobody else pay close attention.
Even though they all root for fuckin Trinidad… still.
I like my Latino friends at the boxing gym the best man. They’ve been doing it for so long, they’re so fucking fast! And then there’s me, the big gringo trying to hit the little fuckers to no avail.

True, but its gonna take a lot to sway fans from MMA back to boxing. I love boxing and I love MMA. IMO, MMA is more fun to watch. Although a lot of MMA fans hate the ground game. They’d rather watch two fighters in a slug-fest. Which worked very well in boxing because the only weapons used are fists. Every fight was a slug-fest. To that end, boxing can trump MMA. However, its going to take a beast like Tyson with the personality of (dare I say) Nassem Hammed to get boxing back on its feet. I still wanna punch Hammed in the face myself.
I just have to ask… What is that in your avatar?

That’s the GOAT man! Come on!

If you have to ask, you’ll never know.
I know it’s Ali, but which fight, who’s the opponent?? ![]()
If you have to ask, you can’t afford a Z-Jay.
Gad demmit ![]()
It’s strange how Silva has this weird obsession with fighting RJJ. He’s NOT the RJJ he once was, so even if Silva wins (however unlikely that still may be), its not like he defeated him in his prime.

Agreed. What does Silva weigh? 185?

Any MMA fighter who thinks they are good enough to box pro(I know a lot of guys have, but if they were any good they would have stuck with it because it pays better) because they have good standup can fight Ray Mercer. Any boxer who thinks MMA is easy and beneath them and that they could train for a few months and be a champion can fight Don Frye or somebody. People would watch it every time.
Someone get this man a reality show.
Sorry, 205.
Put him against someone who is his size and actually still good… like Bad Chad Dawson. I’d pay to see that one.

MMA has grown bigger and better than boxing ever will be. This thread has gone way beyond moot. Silva, a well established MMA fighter with 2 professional boxing matches somehow gets a shot to box a former/current world title holder in multiple weight classes in boxing? Come on guys, all this is hypothetical because RJJ vs Silva has as much of a chance of happening as Fedor joining the UFC walking out to his fights wearing an affliction t-shirt.
Boxing is in kind of a low spot right now. But if we had an era like the mid-80s and early 90s where there were several big name, incredible fighters (Hagler, Leonard, Duran, Tyson, Holyfield, etc.) boxing would be right back where it was.
The sport has always run in cycles… but the business end is very fucked up right now. Boxing dying is a product of promoters sucking too many associations- not because of MMA. Believe it or not, there’s actually room in the world for more than one sport.

A real slug fest is sort of rare in boxing. Too much clutching and grabbing…and poor ref’s.
Go watch Hagler Hearns…that was a slug fest. Both fighters came out to hurt the other guy.
Food for thought. RJJ just weighed in at about 175 for his fight with Jeff Lacy. I’m just sayin…

Unless Silva gets to around that, it shouldn’t even be considered.
That’s why I’m saying put Silva against a young, heavier fighter. Like Bad Chad.

I see your angle…but you know that it’s the whole mystique of fighting RJJ…because he is RJJ. It’s not that Silva is trying to prove a point in the “mma vs. boxing” debate. More so because he respects RJJ and it would be a honor to himself to fight his idol. That’s a mince of his words…but that’s what I get out his statements on the issue.
But in regard to the weight issue…Silva fought a great portion of his career at 170. If this fight goes through as planned after Silva retires,it’s possible that he can drop weight. Depending on how he goes about dropping weight,Silva will still be the bigger fighter…since RJJ is naturally 168-175.
So let’s be realistic:
Silva is not going to go into boxing and beat a young, undefeated fighter in their prime(Dawson)…he could try of course, but it wouldn’t be in his favor.

Like when Marciano knocked out Joe Louis…
Joe Louis had come out of retirement to fight Rocky Marciano and he was seventy six years old. Joe Louis is always lying about his age. He lie about his age all the time. One time Frank Sinatra came in here and sat in this chair. I said Frank ‘you hang out with Joe Louis, just between me and you, how old is Joe Louis.’ You know what Frank told me, he said “Hey, Joe Louis is 137 years old.” A hundred and thirty-seven years old!

Yeah, except no one would want to see that fight.
I think its assumed Roy Jones would kill him a bit to quickly. As in UFC 101 Andersons striking is to the point where its head and shoulders above most people in mma in my opinion. The only comparison I can make is to Roy Jones in that he’s so confident with his strikes and defense that he doesnt hold his hands up half the time relying on head movement to bait opponents, which as we saw Anderson is pretty good at.
I think the larger gloves would make the striking a lot different then MMA for Anderson, as I think he will be able to see them coming, dodge more effectively, and take more punches. In the Griffin fight he showed fantastic head movement and crazy accuracy, I think it’d be easier for him to dodge boxing gloves, but perhaps he wouldnt get a jab knock out with a pair of them?
Anderson Silva also isn’t stupid, as Roy Jones said in the link that someone posted from UFC 101 when Roy was Andersons guest, they are friends. Anderson knows how good Roy Jones is, he’s not stupid, if he thinks he can box Roy Jones, then I’ll take his word for it. Because he’s…Anderson Silva…
And Roy Jones is much older and slower then he was when all those highlight videos were made.
We’ve never really seen Anderson Silva “box” because he has so many other tools, but to just flat out say he’d get KO’d in the first round or 3rd round or whatever other early predictions I think is kind of foolish.
Either way I can’t wait for the fight to finally happen, I’m just saying I wouldn’t count out Anderson Silva, maybe the odds are against him, but to me its not nearly as stacked against him as people think.
