Below is a video of me squatting 405 down to a box. It wasn’t that hard probably could have removed the box and gone deeper or added more weight to the bar. Benn training for almost 5 months.
You can follow my training log here. My friend Matthaeus started it but he stopped coming with me so it’s just my log now. Here is the link.
Nah he created the account as well as starting the log I’m to lazy to change the name through tech support. If you read the log you’ll notice it starts saying “Me” and “Friend” but now it only says “Friend” since Matthaeus stopped coming… “Friend” is referring to me and my lifts.
I got 168kg x 4reps x 4sets tonight,
recovery session 150kg x 2reps x 6sets
178kg x 3reps x 3sets
recovery session 150kg x 2reps x 6sets
187kg x 2reps x 2sets
recovery session
then aiming for 196kg
a few weeks ago i went for 4 plates for the first time, with belt and wraps. I have been chasing 405 for over a year, and had never gone higher than 365 for reps at the time.
when I went for 410 (big collars), it shot up so easily that I kept going.
My new max is 440, with belt and wraps. Which I’m VERY pleased with. only one month of training with a local powerlifting group put something like 60lbs on my back squat.
Squat has been the hardest lift progress wise for me. I used to only front-squat and I switched to madcow 5x5 about 3 months ago which requires back squat 3 times a week.
Currently I am at 275x5 ATG. Which is embarassing because my front squat was about 225x5(as of 3 months ago).
Anyways I’ve been on a plateau for a couple weeks so i need to reset the program anyways. Just frusterating. Got a long way to go.

I’ll give it a shot, thanks for the advice.
Not a problem brother.
Sunday I hit 365x3 and then 385x1, both of which were PRs. I have a meet in two weeks, and I am definitely going to squat 400+ with a belt and knee wraps
Sign me up. I’ve been trying to think of some motivational goals for me to aim for and 4 plates a side on the squat should do it. Currently my 1RM is 130kg @70kg, 180kg is the goal. With the shoulder impingement I have atm I’ve decided to do smolov jr for the next month.
Any ideas on how long it will take me to get to 180kg? I’m prepared to gain weight to get me up to 75kg/165lbs but no more than that is it’ll make playing s*ccer difficult and if I ever enter a powerlifting comp it’ll have to be at 165lbs.
Also, is a 2x bodyweight squat considered ‘good’ here or is that a little light? I read in a post that 2x BW is a decent number, but I’m nearly there 6 months after acl surgery and 9 months after starting lifting weights after a 5 year break and 2xBW seems a little too easy. That probably reads like a semi-brag, which I guess it is, but I’m wondering if I have any talent at powerlifting and should enter a competition sometime in my life instead of halfassing it.
The less restrictions you place on yourself, the easier it will be for you to get a 400 lb squat.
I don’t know if doing soccer and powerlifting at the same time is really a good idea, powerlifting is more of an off season thing to do. Isn’t soccer season over? Also, how would increased strength/muscular bodyweight hinder your soccer ability?
Whether a x2 bw squat is good or not depending on other people’s “powerlifting” perspectives at t nation with respect to some idea of performance in general is not really important, because no one really cares how good you are at powerlifting. What is important is how a x2 bodyweight squat squares with progress from your individual numbers and your weight over time.
Let me congratulate you on your numbers, because close to a x2 bodyweight squat is nothing to sneeze at. However, it probably won’t get you noticed in most powerlifting circles. That being said, don’t let that discourage you from trying out a powerlifting competition, because they are enjoyable and you will learn a lot by doing them. Are you god’s gift to powerlifting? Well, you have to train for a while to find out.
Anecdotally, when I went to my first powerlifting meet it was a humbling experience. I was 22 at the time, but there was a 14 year old boy in the same weight class as me (198lbs or 90kg) benching around 270 and deadlifting in the low 400s, both of which were better than my numbers. I highly recommend trying one out, because it will give you perspective that I can’t give you just by posting here.
2 months ago, 335x6 box squat on 5/3/1 failure set. Oct.31st, 343 on 2nd attempt in 1st meet. Got greedy and shot up to 408 for my 3rd attempt and missed it. I should have been smart and went for 386 or something close to that. Training 5/3/1, no advanced techniques yet, still a beginner. Form needs work. I’ll get that 408 on Feb.6th at my next meet.
Good thread, thanks for starting it. Oh, I’m 5’9, 188 lbs. Stuck between weight classes and haven’t decided which way I’m going, up or down. 1st meet I was 196 lbs.
Got 303lbs for a single yesterday…bar starting to bend at the top :D…BW at 180lbs at 5’ 11". I had more in the tank but didn’t want to go all out cause I was at a commercial gym and not at where I train with my weightlifting coach.
If the bar is bending at the top with 300lbs, that is awful equipment? What gym was this at? Wouldn’t happen to be an Urban Active? Those are the big chain of commercial gyms here in Columbus and I feel like I’m in the movie DODGEBALL every time I enter. I am forced to train at one b/c of location & training partner in a contract, and it blows.
Anyways, Ronaldo7, OUTSTANDING on the 303! Keep grinding and you’ll be there soon.
I lost another 4 lbs and my strength and numbers are both going up so it looks like I’ll be competing at 181 lbs in the upcoming meet. I’ll keep an eye on your posts, as we are close to the same size…
About 3 months ago I was doing 315 for 7 reps with just a belt, and something like 12 with wraps. I think I had 405 in the bag, but I pulled my groin and took 2 months off.
The other day I box squatted 315 for 10 with a belt, and on monday did 345 for 6. Havent recorded it, but im almost positive im getting parallel with the box. Hopefully by the end of January ill have a 405 free squat!

Good luck on the journey!
It’s just a local commercial gym. I don’t think the equipment is shitty(the bounce is not extremely noticeable but there’s definitely some bounce at the top) It might be the fact that all my squats are done Olympic style and as fast as possible.

And thanks!! how tall are you?

I hadn’t even thought of that, but you’re right, it’s the speed/Olympic style. No problem bro; I am 5’9, 184 lbs.
I’ve been cutting since the Oct.31st meet where I weighed in at a fat and heavy 196lbs. I used the V-diet to kick start the cut and it went really well. Actually just wrapped that up and now I’m eating whole foods again. To my surprise, my numbers all went up during the diet, so I decided this wasn’t a bad move after all. Going to try competing at 181 on Feb.6th.
