Ripped my first callus off and I’m oddly proud of myself because I’ve went 12 years without doing it. With that being said I’m just curious about how people deal with it or help it heal faster if you can even do such a thing. Also general care so I don’t risk ripping another one off. Obvious things would be to use straps on my pulling for a while and I’ve read somewhere that using a pumice stone can help keep them under control.
Do it in the shower once per week plus a tiny bit of moisturizer. Don’t go nuts on the calluses
I’ve been thinking about writing a post about skin conditioning. If I ever do a proper write-up I’ll circle back here and link to it. I climb a lot so my hands get even more beat up than they would if I just did weightlifting so I’ve had to learn a thing or two.
But, yes, callouses may be cool and all but that’s until they are torn off, they need to be sanded down eventually. I use a certain file for this and not a pumice stone but either one should be fine.
You can help it heal faster, I don’t know what the vibe is here for linking to other sites but check out Rhino Skin Solutions and their Split Stick. And their repair cream for skin care on DL days.
As you go about lifting in the coming days wear some finger tape/athletic tape over the wound to make lifting more enjoyable, to leave less blood behind on barbells, and to not get an infection.
I’ve never actually had big calluses because I’ve always used straps for all my pulls but for whatever reason the last couple months I decided to lose the straps although I’ve never had a problem with grip and it has been killing my hands and thumbs (hook grip) and now ripped off a callus.
Thanks for the suggestions I’ll definitely check all that out because it doesn’t feel good
I’m confused, did you use straps and use a hook grip simultaneously?
Mazel Tov!
S
No. I made the switch from straps to hook grip in the last couple months because reasons? And my hands are hating me for it
Takes like 1-2 days before the skin goes numb and you can return to training as normal. Until then, you can use superglue or athletic tape over the area.
Always have gloves as an option too.
I tore one of mine in the second event of my 3rd comp. Had 3 more events to go, which were farmers walk, harnessed truck pull with a rope, and atlas stones. Yeah…those are 3 fun events with a torn callous. Spent time in between events pouring hand sanitize into the wound and then covering it with super glue.
If possible, I recommend NOT doing that.
If its a little tear or half off super glue works to stick it back, might sting alittle for a couple seconds but it works!
My girlfriend has this hand held spinning electric grinder thingy to do nails and I just take it with a sand paper fitting and go over the callouses one ever two weeks or whatever.
Idk if it’s just societal practices we women follow or something else, but concerning calluses, I just keep in mind to moisturize my hands a few times a day.
The calluses I do have hardly ever rip. They raise up after training and go down after I moisturize or whatever.
Shea Butter has softening effects from the fatty acids it contains, aloe Vera juice, lotion, conditioner, coconut oil, really anything that’s softening. If you can keep the callused parts of your hands soft for the long term, they tend to not rip off or rip open.
I know dudes don’t typically give a damn about moisturizing, but it goes a long way, to moisturize everything else on your body too, considering skin is skin.
General hygiene, especially considering I also have a partner who doesn’t exactly like the feel of rough hands on certain female parts
It’s even harder being a glazier where the amount of cuts and nicks I get on my hands and arms, I actually don’t have fingerprints anymore which is normal in my trade
2nd the shea butter suggestion,
No it’s a big one. It happened sometime during my 10 minute EMOM and I think with every minute it just got worse and worse until I finished and was wondering how all that blood got on the bar.
When I was in college I use to religiously moisturize after having enough conversations with girls about how dry, rough skin was a turn off. I stopped after college mostly because of laziness but maybe I’ll try and work it back into my daily life
Yea the rough parts of my husbands hands don’t feel the best lol.
Even if I try to ignore it it’s like sand paper. So I pack him lotion in his backpack and tell him to use it. Lol
If you want a tip the quickest way to moisturize all over is in the shower. Right after scrubbing down and rinsing off, get some oil of your choice douse it all over like from an applicator bottle or just dunk your hands in some, slather yourself in it before you dry off, then dry off with a towel.
Even coverage, can do it in like 15-30 seconds. Locks in the water from the shower, all that crap.
It got on my nerves how long I was taking to moisturize, ever since my mom told me that, it’s about the quickest part of my hygiene routine.
Yeah I ripped one on my thumb during deads with hook grip 2 weeks ago. I just use overhand or straps for a week then I’m good. But it’s rare, I think I ripped a callus only twice
What do you yourself prefer?
Shea Butter. Or Almond oil, since it’s one of the lightest oils out there.

Callus shavers are a thing. It’s like 5 bucks for basically a specialized safety razor that skims the top off and keep them level. Use it right after (or, I guess, in) the shower followed by the pumice stone to smooth it out.
This is what I have used for years.
