Rich Franklin Workout Video

JBraswell,

Quick question for you. Why lift at all? Why not just get all your conditioning through actual MMA fighting. I mean, if the only purpose of lifting is geared towards hypertrophy, and if you are already at the maximum weight for your class, what benefits would lifting have?

I hope I don’t come across as a smartass, I’m interested in your opinions on the subject being as I know really nothing about training for MMA.

Also if weight training carrys over to all other sports why not mma? Or am I just assuming that it carrys over to all other sports.

i dont understand that kind of training… BTW that chick is really intresting… who is she?

Well, while I think this is a reasonable position, one I’ve been maintaining in practice if not in theory for the past two or three years, one could argue that lifting is a good supplement for two reasons. One is injury prevention; MMA training may induce certain muscle imbalances that need correction, or it may wear on certain muscles so much that they need to strengthened, e.g., rotator cuffs, perhaps.

Second, as Rich Franklin would probably think, local muscular endurance, being a function of muscle structure, the presence of cellular bodies, in particular, could be enhanced with weight work. Even though, technically, you could improve this with direct MMA training, I think you can push your muscle harder in a task that is less technical. For example, I think it’s easier to sprint mindlessly than to throw a good left hook mindlessly.

Italian Muscle, I don’t think the limit strength and power benefits of strength training carry over to any sports really. Perhaps if the sports movements are extremely, extremely simple you would get tranfer, but in a sport like MMA, with such varied movement patterns, I don’t think you get any tranfer at all.
