Reps! Magazine

I wanted to see what T-Nation members felt about this (relatively) new magazine. It harks back, and aspires to, the more Frank Zane style of physique or in more modern terms, guys like Stan McQuay.

I bought the 1st issue and a couple of others, namely ones with articles about Columbo, Arnold and the Bomber in their prime. I’m sure i’m not alone in saying I enjoy having an actual publication in my hands that I can leaf through but there are just so many poor magazínes out there these days telling you the same crap you’ve heard for years.

I will withhold commenting on said magazine so as my bias doesn’t interfere with the comments and thoughts of the members. Also, how is Robert Kennedy (founder of the mag) regarded in the BB world? I’s just like to add that I have no association with the magazine in question.

Thanks for your comments, thoughts in advance.

I bought one, i liked it - it was ok. From a training others point of view though.

i probably wont buy it again for another 3-6 months.

It is ok thouh, by the same publisher as musclemag isnt it?

As far as I know yes. I got a recent one with Arnold in his prime, some great photo’s. I admit I enjoy the behind the scenes stuff. I think the idea’s behind it are sound but trying to sell to make a profit and not just say the usual shit about how to get a 6 pack will prove difficult.

I did notice a lot of the recent POWERFUL IMAGES were also in the mag.

just a bunch of buisness men who think they know everything trying to make some money

Yes, it is the same publisher as MuscleMag.
I have the first issue, but no others.

MuscleMag has had a lot of competition with Muscle & Fitness over the years. MuscleMag is now the 2nd biggest selling bb mag on the market. I think Bob Kennedy created Reps to compete with Flex magazine.

Bob’s been in the iron game a long time, and his reputation varies depending on who you talk to. But just from direct conversations I’ve had with him several times as well as working with him since '01, the man is passionate about bodybuilding (and still attends the big shows), has a keen artistic eye (often doing photoshoots himself), and displays great loyalty.

That’s interesting Iron Dwarf.

From looking at some of the T-cell activty there does seem to be a yearning for decent quality publication as there aren’t too many out there. What i think most people like are the old stories and in fighting as well as friendships that went on in days past. There doesn’t seem to be the same characters there was or maybe you just don’t hear about them.

The magazine is decent, compared to a lot of the other rags out there. The main problem I have with it is the constant steroid bashing that goes one while the vast majority of the lifters photographed for the articles are users.

“527 muscle tips guaranteed to build size”

only 527 ?

That’s the best name they could come up with?

Like a runner mag naming itself sweat…

Actually the name only refers to the repetitive nature of their content…

That is retarded… the repetitive nature of Their content…All magazines are repetitive, you don’t see SI doing an issue with organic farming and then the next month talking about building materials its sports, sports, and more sports…

WTF…

Heh heh!
It always seems the foreigners know their English better than the Americans. I know… I grew up with a German mother always correcting me.

Yeah but i’m mostly Irish so I can’t take the credit…

I used to read Musclemag back in the days before they became a product listing for a certain supplement line. IN fact, I was a regular reader when the supps first came out, and every other article in the mag tried too much to convince you that there was no connection between the publisher and the supplement company (the people at _____ tell us that their new creatine is 8000x better than any other brand -lol).

Bob Kennedy’s been around the game for a while, and used to (I don’t know how much anymore) take a lot of the photos that he ran. I met him once, and he did seem to be a genuinely decent fellow. I will say however, that his credibility went completely down the toilet when a few years ago his Olympia coverage had the headline “How one supplement company’s flag flies higher than all the others at Olympia Expo” (or some Bullshit like that). If I were taking a flight somewhere, and his mag was the only one they sold in the newstand at the airport, I’d pick it up, but never when I have a choice of any other publication.

Thanks teach…

No problem mate…just lookin out for ya. You never know when some prick will come along and take the piss…

Jesus Stu, that banner or headline must really have pissed you off! So what mags are worth reading these days? As i said previousy i only look at ones with interesting stories as most of the workout advice is just the same old same old…

Heya Pat,

I’m all for the stories, I love reading about the good ol’ days -lol. THere’s very little your can do to put a new spin on basic training methodologies. T-Nation is cool because folks exchange what works for them, and you get some new ideas, but most magazines have to be geared to bring in new readers every issue. That basic equates to 90% of the same BS each month. Sure it’s cool to be inspired by the pics, and I’ll even read a lot of the real tech-ie articles that may not even apply to my personal goals, but again, when was the last time you read ANY muscle mag and learned something so amazingly innovative that it totally turned around evrything you were doing? Geez, I sound like a cranky old bastard here -lol.

I’ll read MD, as it’s pretty much the only mag that contains enough paper to warrant the price on the cover. It also (compared to the other muscle rags… flex, MM, Ironman) seems to have a bit more actual information each month, and yes, I do get into reading the pros’ columns. For actually information I read Natural Bodybuilding and Fitness. I think it only comes out 4x a month, but actually has worthwhile articles. I’ve pretty much been hooked on it for the last 2 years, and it’s definitely fueled my goals to cut down and see how solid I can get.

That article I refered to (Kennedy’s olympia coverage) was just the last straw. You can ony have your intelligence insulted so many times -lol.

``Bigger arms today. Rock hard abs. burn fat. 527 muscle tips.‘’

Please explain to me what’s original about this magazine? Just another male version of Cosmopolitan
