Wasn’t sure which forum to post this in, but since one of the things I’m looking for is a platform I figured this would work. I am a member of 24 hour fitness, and I HATE it!! Does anybody know of a gym in Houston that is athlete friendly? I probably won’t find everything in one gym, but I’d like a platform, a strip of field turf, tires, sledgehammers, chains, bands, etc.
The Warehouse Gym
League City
PM me for the phone # and addy
We have a powerlifting crew, 2 pro strongmen (one has been competed at Worlds Strongest Man and the other won Olympia’s strongest man last week), several amateur strongmen and I see guys doing the olympic style weightlifting but it aint my thing. There is one “athlete” type chick who is training for the olympics. We got a couple guys that drive from downtown and one from Galleria so you can probably carpool if you want to.
The gym - Over 5000lbs of plates, dumbbells to 95, Maddawg Squat Bar, Texas Power Bar, Texas Deadlift Bar, Giant Cambered Squat Bar, 2 Safety Squat Bars, 2" Thick Bar, regular Olympic bars, over 200lbs of chains, Jumpstretch Bands, 2 Power Racks with 8x8 platforms, Hydraulic Monolift, Competition Bench, Chest-supported Row, Reverse Hyper Pro, 2 Glute Ham Raises, 45 degree hyper, 2 Dragging Sleds, 2 Prowlers, 2 sets of Farmers Walk Handles, 3 Super Yokes, 700 and 800lb Tires, Stones from 160 to 385, loading platforms from 48" to 67", 600lb Anchor Chain, 8, 10 and 13in Steel Strongman Logs and lots of other shit.
I know this isn’t very close to you, but I just opened a Warehouse facility for athletes, power lifter, and people who are tired of normal gyms off of 290 in NW Houston.
Hank’s Gym has a platform with bumpers (very few people use it) and some GREAT plyometrics/footwork tools. Also, if you’re into boxing and conditioning I don’t think any gym could beat it. This was great as it literally was a walk away (living in Bellaire).
Team Houston’s gym in League City looks very cool though and they have very knowledgeable coaches. However, the drive is just too far to make it out there on a regular basis.
I have been driving down to the Warehouse once a week. It is quite the drive but an awesome atmosphere and great people.
I also just put a 3X3 Elite rack in my garage. I still need to get my stall mats but other than that it is about ready for the basics. I also own a Prowler.

We need to hang out. Turbo, what’s the monthly dues at Hanks? I just signed up at Houstons on Durham and love it, but completely forgot about Hanks when I signed. Houstons has just about everything you could ask for [including db’s up to 180] except bumpers and a platform.
Hank’s is expensive. I got fed up with the new 24 on Richmond and went gym shopping. I visited Hank’s. I asked if they had a Glute-Ham and Reverse Hyper. The trainer didn’t know what either of those were. I looked around and they do have a Glute-Ham but no Reverse Hyper. For me, it wasn’t worth the price.
A former co-worker who plays semi-pro lacross trains at Houston’s on Durham and really likes it, too. I was going to check it out but Elite ran a special on a scratched rack and I jumped on it.
By the way, my neighbors love the Prowler sound through the neighborhood!

I was at 24 too man, and like you just got tired of it. Houstons is badass. They don’t have a ghr or reverse hyper and no platform/bumper plates, but everything else and the environment couldn’t be better for getting strong. How much did that prowler run you?
I paid full price from Elite for it- about $450 after shipping, I believe. I bought the large model not the econo version though. I intend to have it for a long time. Think long-term, today.
We are in similar areas. If you want to push with me sometime, shoot me a PM. That goes for anyone else, too. Right now, I usually push once a week for general conditioning. Sometimes I add a second recovery day.
Hank’s is definitely the most expensive gym I know of. Three months cost me $450. The cool thing about the gym, besides having exactly what an explosive athlete wants, is that the trainers were mostly professionals (including Gold Medalists) in sports: football, wrestling, bodybuilding, boxing, etc. All the guys there have been very friendly and go out of their way to help you out/spot you/give you advice if you need it. Because most of the people that come in there are professionals just looking to get “in shape”, if you’re training like an athlete and show a lot of drive, they really like talking with you, watching you, and giving you advice. Hell, all trainers I’ve talked with say they LOVE coaching athletes more than anything.
To put it short, their competitive advantage is in their equipment and high-end staff.
Again, if you’re into boxing, you REALLY need to check Hank’s out.
Btw, I’ve heard of one other gym in the city having multiple platforms/bumpers, but they wouldn’t let you drop the weights. Are there any besides Hank’s that have bumpers and let you slam the weights?
You can do just about anything you want at the Warehouse. The owner, Zach, was performing snatch last week. I also watched pro-strongman Andy Vincent do a one-arm barbell snatch on a whim after we were talking about them. Impressive, to say the least.
It’s a cool place- it’s just a bit of drive for anyone located in the metro Houston area.
If you are a med center employee, you can join the UT Houston gym. They have bumper plates and CHALK! No platform though. All the bars are Texas Power bars.
Also Break Away Speed sports is another O lifter friendly gym and has indoor turf and geared towards athletes as well. The only reason, I don’t belong there is that it is a further drive.
(I live in Midtown). They are located on the SW side of Houston near 610.

Sorry to highjack the post…are there any YMCAs in Houston that have bumper plates and/or a lifting platform?

Dude, I just called BA sports and am gonna check it out tonight. I just joined a gym about a month ago, but if this place has bumpers and a track I’ll see if I can get out of the other gym and join BA.
