Hardcore Gyms in Houston

I am looking to see where the powerlifting and/or olympic lifting gyms are in Houston.

Tried google, but came up with nothing. If anyone has some info let me know. I actually live in Tomball (northwest of Houston), if that helps with locations.

Thanks

I’m a grad student at Rice and would like to train somewhere better (splitting time between Rice weight room and a crappy 24 HR fitness right now). But I haven’t found much inside the loop and I don’t want to drive up 290 or anything to train 4x a week. Depending on my financial situation next year, I may get my own stuff from EFS and put it in the garage.

This place seems to make all the ‘powerlifting friendly’ lists. http://www.costasgym.com/

Since you’re in Tomball, it might not be such a pain to get there as it would be from where I live.

Any lifting camps in Houston?

Rice has a nice weight room, and so does UofH, but I think you have to be students to get a membership. There’s a place called Hank’s in Bellaire that has some cool shit, and the Houstonian has boards, chains, bands, ghr’s, buffalo bars and shit like that. The problem is I have to sneak into the Houstonian as I can’t afford the base level $35,000 a year membership.

Fuck man, I post looking for partners all the time! I’m in southeast houston, probably too far from you though. Tiny Meeker has a gym in Humble, not too far from tomball I think.

If anyone is towards the southeast side, I have a pretty good gym. Rack w/monolift, 55lb squat bar, 2 safety squat bars, tx power bar, fat bar, shitty oly bar for rack pulls etc, 1300lbs plates, 800lbs dumbbells, glute ham raise, reverse hyper, bands and chains, boxes, dragging sled, 600ish lb tire and other stuff. Looking to get a giant cambered bar pretty soon too.

I’m dying out here for partners so reply or pm me if interested.

I’ll attach a couple recent pics

here is another pic

I promise I don’t bite

Oh shit, forgot about The Gym up off 1960 and 45.

Tony Cardella, #3 in IPF and runs GoHeavy lifts there as well as Travis Ortmayer (pro strongman) and another pro strongman that I can’t remember his name. They have a good atmosphere for getting big and strong there also.

That might be closer to you than Tiny’s place.

Good luck

Prices like that, no wonder Houston ranks near the top of Men’s Fitness’s fattest cities in America. :stuck_out_tongue:

[I’m pretty sure you’re kidding about the 35k/year membership.]

Unfortunately he is not. That place is high end, I am surprised they have that kind of equipment. It is more than just a gym though, the Houstonian is a high end social club with gym/spa ameneties. Thanks for the responses. Commercial wise, there is a Costa’s near me that I will have to check out and go from there. I work off of Jones, so that should not be a problem. The gym off 1960/45 is about 25 min. depending on traffic. I will have to check that out also.

Nice gym, if I was located closer I would take you up on your generous offer. But SE Houston (near peak traffic time) can be about an hour and 45 minutes away. Humble is about 45 minutes, I will have to look into that side of town. Thanks alot.

Rice’s athletic gym is good. Our normal weight room is pathetic. U of H’s is much much better. However, you can get memberships at both places even if you’re not student/faculty.

There is a brand new training center called Break away Speed Training near myerland. They do Olympic lifting, speed training, and other stuff.

One guy I know trains with Tiny Meeker in Humble. Tiny will charge you 30 bucks a month. You might want to look into that.

I’ve been training at Hanks the last few months (just off Bissonet outside 610) and it is decent, the only gripe that I have is the platrom is right dead in front of all the cardio equipment and they only allow it for olympic lifts, so its kind of hard sometimes to find enought floor space to deadlift when its crowded.
Overall its better than anything else I’ve found on the west side of the city.

How much is the membership at Hanks?
