How many Push ups do you think any person should be able to do no matter their phsyical fitness. I personally can do 25 Push ups keeping form and going at a reasonable speed…not 5 per sec like alot of people who do 100… If I can do 25 started being able to do 1 (rofl) in only a matter of weeks… when Im 290lbs
How many can you do\ how many do you think anyone should be able to do…
i prefer the ones where you make a fist and balance your hands on your knuckles as it is harder for me (compared to regular flat hand pushups) particularly when trying to go deep
as for amount after a few years of doing these on chest days i’m up to about 30 at a BW of 225 lbs

I can only do one fist push up…may be im doing it wrong because it hurts
I don’t think you can put a definite number on this, but anyone who can’t do 10 pushups is pretty sad.
exrx.com’s fitness testing pushup calculator says that for 20 year old males, the average is 44. Drops to 34 at age 30. Just looking around at my job, that’s a high estimate. Most of the guys I work with probably couldn’t do one if they cheated.
Yes, my job is a great motivator for me. I don’t want to be like these weak, fat fucks.

I don’t think there is a ‘should be able to do’ for anyone, regardless of their relative level of fitness. Some people have strengths, some don’t. I’m a puss when it comes to wide-grip pullups (18 non-stop, last attempt) and chinups (23 non-stop, last attempt). But I can pump out the pushups. Also, range of motion counts for a lot. Pushups off the hands all the way down is way different than from bars all the way down. Also, hand placement is another factor, but I digress…
Wide, 85 non-stop
Shoulder, 90 non-stop
Narrow, 70 non-stop
Staggered, 70 non-stop
130 in 2 min’s with hands on ground, 95 w/ bars.
200 in 5 min’s with hands on ground, 125 w/ bars.
That all said I’ll leave you with this… pushups are about as much technique as they are strength and endurance. Finding the right muscles to activate when during the range of motion is KEY to pumping them out.
Interesting Jimbo. A year ago I banged out 44 just trying to get my spine to “crack” after a 10 hour drive. A week or two I went for max pushups and only got 35. I was expecting to get 50.

You got some good pull and push up numbers.[/quote]
Thanks, pushups are something I’ve done for YEARS, since back in the NAV ('94). My pullup numbers are terrible. I once saw a guy at the gym do 112 (varied) pullups in about a 1/2 hour all pullup back workout. That was one of the most impressive things I’ve ever seen. Of course, dude goes about 160, and he’s ALL upper body. Still an impressive feat (to me). He’s been appropriate coined ‘pull up boy’…
I rearly do them anymore only on chest days at the end of the workout as a sort of Blowout set I do as many as I can to faliure after I do flat banch, inclined bench, fly’s and weighted dips…Now I cant get 55 after that workout but if im fresh its normally no problem!
