Okay, you baited me. I just jumped down on the floor and tested myself. I got 75 in 1:19 and stopped there because that’s 100%. And I was tired. I might have had 10 more in me, but not much more.
I actually used to do this and train for it when I was in the Marine Corps. Although the push up wasn’t part of our fitness testing, it was a part of the other services. So some friends and I decided to test ourselves. I had a personal goal of 100 in 2 minutes, but got bored with training for it. My high was in the low 90’s.
When we tested we would group our push ups in sets of ten or fifteen reps and pause in the “up” position to rest a few seconds. We thought that this gave us more lasting power to go the whole 2 minutes.
Anyway, 75 is a very attainable goal and 2 minutes is more than enough time to reach that number. Good luck to your friend.
Hey I was about to start a new post but can I just add a question into this thread:
About how many pushups straight can you do? What is your bodyweight? And about what is your bench max?
I’m curios when you start getting above 100 if it does anything at all for your bench press.
And I’ve always sucked at push-ups. Whether I was benching 150 or 300 max, I could do about 40 pushups straight. I’d guess maybe 60 or so in two minutes.
Sounds like the Army PF Test. The one thing that a lot of people don’t account for on this is the type of rep you need to accomplish. It takes some getting used to. The regulation is that your upper arm must pass below parallel to the ground and your elbows must lock out at the top and when you stop, you cannot lift your hands or feet up, or go to your knees. I used to hit 90 and stop there to save myself for the next 2 events, although one time I hit 100, just for shits and giggles. Then you rest for about 8 minutes and do 2:00 minutes of sit ups, rest 8 minutes and do a 2-mile run. It all sounds easy, and to a lot on this site it probably is, but it’s an event that you do have to train for to get used to the form and the pace. Now, I can probably only hit about 70 in the two minutes.
While in the Army I got my Push ups to 87, Sit ups 89 and the 2 mile run in 13:07. Because of a shoulder injury preventing me from doing benches, dips or flies, I have rediscovered the old fashioned push up…Not the best, but when you just can’t hit anything else…what can ya do?
I think that pushups are a useful exercise for increasing work capacity. In that sense, they may help your bench improve more rapidly. If pushups are done without the accompanying work in the weightroom, they probably won’t help do much more than increasing capillarization in the targeted muscles (these can be different depending on hand and elbow positioning).
A friend in a military academy told me he could crank out 60 nonstop. So I asked him to prove it. Poor Ricky Martin, on his best day, could never shake his ass this well.
At a .5/0/.5/0 tempo, I can do 50 or 60 in a set with perfect from. Add 40 if I try the shit form everyone else seems to like so much. Between shit form and ballistic tempos, I can probably drill at least a hundred in two minutes.
But when I train pushups, the rep range never extends beyond 15. In what context 75 would be useful, I haven’t the foggiest.
I got up to 118pu in 2 mins, at the time I was benching 315 for 2 reps@a bodyweight of 190-it was pretty much nonstop pushing til the last 20 seconds when I would pause for a couple seconds…Now I don’t think I could get over a hundred, but I’m benching 425 for 2 reps. I think if I were training for it I could probably get back to 118 again, but don’t really desire to anymore.
Not sure how many he could do, but a friend of mine can do something amazing to me. One day on his cement driveway, he did a bunch of pushups. The amazing part is that with each one he would clap his hands BEHIND his back. He wasn’t throwing his body up real high either. He was just extremely fast. I would smash my face on the cement!
Okay, thanks for the input guys. I told my friend that 75 in 2:00 was not a big deal, but he said “maybe not for you.” From what I’m reading it should not be a big deal for anyone who is in reasonable shape and has that for a goal.

Are you kidding me? This is impressive.

No I’m not kidding. I was amazed when I seen it. He’s challenged many to try it but know one has been able to do them like him. The other amazing thing is he’s also won many bench press competitions here in Michigan for his weight class. So he’s big and strong, but still very fast and flexible.
Tell your friend to suck it up and start pushing. As part of the Fitness Incentive program where I work I’m required to pump out 50 in 60 seconds, plank version not the little girl version. I just practiced, one-down, one-one thousand up and banged out the 50 in 55 seconds and it’s not that hard, really.
I had this one friend who was a huge genetic freak. Even his twin brother who did not work out was lean as hell with a decent amount of muscle. Anyway, this kid, 19 years old, could do around 10 pushups, ON ONE HAND, ON TWO FINGERS. He would put his thumb and index finger on the floor and crank some out. He also tried an iron cross on gymnastics rings and was able to do one on his first attempt
He is a goddamn vegetarian…damn genetic freaks.

I could only see 75 in two minutes being a problem for someone who is out of shape, or maybe someone who is just really big and isnt good at endurance type stuff.
HUFF
I just did 45 in 30 seconds to see if I could put my money where my mouth is…
Note: I’m skinny and good at endurance type things… bench is right around 1.5xBW
