Powerlifting Meets: Results, Advice, Etc.

Thought I would post this link: www.powerliftingwatch.com/node/13675 . One of the members here, coffee(Jeremy Hamilton), will be interviewed. 3 guys that compete in the SPF out of Arkansas are competing there as well. It’s going to be good.

Did my first powerlifting meet yesterday. IPA New Jersey State Championship in Newark, amateur raw division.
Orignally entered in the 198 weight class, but ended lossing 10lbs and weighed in at 181 morning of the meet.
Squat: 295, 325, 345
Bench: 205, 220-failed, 220
Deadlift: 385, 420, 440

I’m hooked. Looking forward to doing my next meet.

Welcome to the club, warpath5, AND you broke a 1 grand total. Work hard and eat your Wheaties.

This looks like a good place for a newbie question - so thanks in advance.
My first meet is in two weeks. This thread answered a bunch of questions, but there is one more -
do you alter your diet any the last week going into the meet?

I’m a BBer turned PL, and it was always diet as the most important factor the last week. Now it’s training!
thanks guys.

Oct 2 will be my 4th meet .

NASA WI state open . only done local meets so far .

un-equipped / 181 / masters or open

currently walking around at 19o , so if I dont make it back to the 181 class , not worried about it

just a question about eating during the meet. Is there really a need to bring protein bars/shakes? Would protein really be used in the few hours that you are there, or is it better to worry about carbs and energy levels and focus on protein the night before?

It depends.

If you don’t need to cut weight then generally no, diet leading up to the meet isn’t a big issue. Eat whichever way helps you personally strength wise.

Now if you have to make weight, then it is more of an issue. Still not as picky as bodybuilding though.

Eating wise though be sure to bring lots of water/beverages and food for the meet. Graze all day long, generally on carbs (starches and fruit work well). The beverages are also important to keep you hydrated and from cramping up.

Good luck and be sure to post your results here (with video if possible).

did my first meet last weekend

APF raw, 148 lifts went:
squat 355,395,424
bench 205f,205,225
dead 355,395,424f

total 1044

My goal was to total over 1000 and to get the 424 squat
failed the first bench because I missed the rack command
failed the last dead because I’m a wuss and either way I had achieved my two goals (and even my best dead would still have put me 15lbs behind the national total record)

I’m trying to prepare for my next meet I have two new goals, the national raw total(1100) and the world record for the raw squat(wpo/wpc)
there are two meets coming up in my area one is august 7th, the other is in October.

I dont have enough time to complete a full training cycle before the august meet (my training cycle lasts 9 weeks) I could do a smaller version and go for the national total record and then do another smaller cycle and go for the squat record in October.

or would it be wiser to skip the august meet and get in some solid training cycles for October?

and one last question, I have trained using sheiko on and off for about a year now, but I have been reading about dr squats 80 day( http://www.joeskopec.com/80java.html ) program and thought i might try it if i do just the October meet.
any experience with it? are the attempts the calculator projects realistic?

thanks for all your help

Heres the video from my last meet, the SPF 3-in-1 Meet at Supertraining. 198/Equipped

Squat 1: 518 good
Squat 2: 550 no good
Squat 3: 578 no good

Bench 1: 248 good
Bench 2: 264 good
Bench 3: 281 no good
I am the world’s worst bencher

Deadlift 1: 450 good
Deadlift 2: 478 good
Deadlift 3: 501 good

First time getting over 500

Competed in my first meet this weekend! Was an IPF meet and I lifted in belt/wraps/singlet. Overall had a pretty good time, played it safe with light openers, went 8/9 lifts.

Weigh-in: 73.8 kg / 162 lbs

Squat: 132.5 kg / 292 lbs
Bench: 95 kg / 210 lbs
Deadlift: 152.5 kg / 335 lbs

Next ones are in october and november!

Did my second meet yesterday. IPA Connecticut State. 181 raw open.
Went 355/235/470. Improved my total by 55lbs from Jan.

I survived my first meet! (But I really forgot to post here - hope it’s not too late.)

I did the Mike Witmer meet in Tampa, June 22nd.
Here’s my totals:
Squat 255
Bench 160
DL 305 (new PR)
Total: 720!

I’m in the 148’s, and I had to drop a bit of weight in the last week, so that was interesting. I had a lot of help with my diet though, and everything worked perfectly! Weighed in at 144 on Saturday morning, and lifted on Sunday afternoon - plenty of time to fill up again.

It was a great experience and everyone was so supportive. Lots of help about how the meet runs and when to be ready for action. The best part is that my total qualified for the RAW United meet next January!! I’m thrilled. Gives a new focus for training and eating tight.

Thanks to all of you for the support on this board. Fantastic!

bump

had my first meet recently (posted thread):
Squat: 365, 391, 407
Bench: 225, 248(fail), 248(fail)
Deadlift: 385, 425, 451

I spent most of my time in between eating, drinking water and watching. a great experience. can’t wait to do another one

Getting ready for my first meet on Nov. 20th, Duluth GA, USAPL 181 Raw.

Planned lifts:
Squat: 385, 415, 455
Bench: 250, 275, 300
DL: 500, 550, 575

We’ll see how it goes, videos will be posted.

Have an APF meet Sat. Going to be my third meet, 2nd APF meet, hopeful my stress induced narcolepsy wont show itself.

Completed my first usapl meet last Saturday. I weighed in at 146 and competed in the Masters 1 category, age 40.

Squat: 215 absolutely horrible number I know but I’m ashamed to admit I’ve only been training squat for 5 months.

Bench: 210 just missed 220

Deadlift: 310 also not very good been training it for about 8 months.

It was a great experience and as a lot of other people have said everyone at the meet was very friendly and helpful. I totally screwed up my squat opener. I unracked and walked out and waited for what seemed like forever for the squat command. It didn’t seem like the judge was going to give it so I just went anyway. At the bottom of my squat I hear him say “squat”. Great lol…At that point I was so thrown I forgot to wait for the rack command as well. Not that it would have mattered. On my second attempt everything went well until I almost racked prematurely again. Luckily a guy I had been talking with earlier yelled “wait!”. Totally saved my ass on that one. After those mishaps the rest of the day went well and I didn’t have any trouble with commands. My next meet is in February. Really working hard to bring up my squat and deadlift numbers so they aren’t quite so embarrassing.

Congratulations on getting your first meet under your belt. Now you have some concrete numbers to shoot for next time. And for only squatting for a few months that’s pretty good.
