Powerlifting Meets: Results, Advice, Etc.

Completed my first usapl meet last Saturday. I weighed in at 146 and competed in the Masters 1 category, age 40.

Squat: 215 absolutely horrible number I know but I’m ashamed to admit I’ve only been training squat for 5 months.

Bench: 210 just missed 220

Deadlift: 310 also not very good been training it for about 8 months.

It was a great experience and as a lot of other people have said everyone at the meet was very friendly and helpful. I totally screwed up my squat opener. I unracked and walked out and waited for what seemed like forever for the squat command. It didn’t seem like the judge was going to give it so I just went anyway. At the bottom of my squat I hear him say “squat”. Great lol…At that point I was so thrown I forgot to wait for the rack command as well. Not that it would have mattered. On my second attempt everything went well until I almost racked prematurely again. Luckily a guy I had been talking with earlier yelled “wait!”. Totally saved my ass on that one. After those mishaps the rest of the day went well and I didn’t have any trouble with commands. My next meet is in February. Really working hard to bring up my squat and deadlift numbers so they aren’t quite so embarrassing.
Way to go man! Don’t get down on youreself like that. It takes guts to get on the platform and lift.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the feedback. Frankly I’m not so much cutting myself down for my performance as I’m upset with myself for avoiding doing squats and deads for so long. I’ve got a long ways to go to bring those numbers up to respectable but I’m a very goal driven person so I know I’ll get there eventually.

Gonna try my first meet (USAPL, WA, Raw) Dec. 4th.

I am 16 and am going to try and weigh in at 148 (I’m 150 ATM), and try and get a 300 deadlift, 275 squat, and 160 bench. I’ve hit everything but a 300 deadlift in training (crapped out halfway up :(, oh well), but I’ve never used a belt or chalk before so I anticipate a heavier lift.

I’ve been training for a year seriously, and it usually goes like this:

Mon: PM: Heavy day
Tues: AM: Light ancillary, PM: DE day
Wed: PM: Heavy day
Thurs: AM: Light ancillary, PM: DE day
Fri: PM: Heavy day
Sat: PM: Whatever I feel like.
Sun: Rest.
(this seems like too much to some people, but I just love working out, can’t get enough, and the results are not too shabby imo)

On a heavy day I usually hit 10-15 singles or doubles on one squat or deadlift variation, one upper body push, and one upper body pull. I never really plan a workout in advance, but I usually go balls out depending on how I feel that day.

On a DE day I do the same thing, but the emphasis is of course on speed and technique.

On ancillary workouts I just work on whatever I think needs work (right now it’s shoulders and lats), and then I do some complexes and go home.

So I have a couple questions.

How would I tweak this to taper for a meet?

How should I eat on the day of the meet?

Should I just be aware of the commands, or should I train with someone yelling them at me?

Everything I’ve read seems to imply that there’s something more complex then asking for your opener, showing up with equipment approved by your federation, and then waiting to lift. How does shit actually go down, minute to minute, and is there anything else I have to do?

Had a meet this past weekend in Defuniak Springs, FL. APA Ironfest. It went very well as I hit all my goals for the meet. I did come in a little lighter than I wanted, weighing 200 5 days out I still went through my normal routine to make weight and came in at 192 (24hr weigh in). This is only my second full meet at 198 and I still have some growing to do…

sqt - 495, 525, 540 (25lb PR)
bench - 350, 370, 380 (5lb PR)
dl - 535, 585 (5lb PR), 600 miss

1505 (75lb PR) @ 192

My first 1500 total! The squat flew up, left close to 20 pounds on the platform. I missed 540 on my last heavy squat session before the meet and I let it get in my head. Room for improvement there. As for the deadlift, I don’t think you can get any closer to locking out a pull and not actually get it. I’m actually a little embarrassed about missing that 600. But after that struggle, I will get it next time.

Flew out to the east coast for the IPA Nationals. The IPA has become super strict with depth, and because of that I bombed :frowning:

Heres how it went:
Squat - 570 (1-2), 580 (1-2), 600 (1-2)
Bench - 265 good, 285 good, passed on third
Deadlift - 500 good, 520 (1-2), 540 good

Apparently I didnt lock my shoulders all the way on that 520 DL.

I went to the Arkansas Christmas Classic yesterday and watched Stephanie Rogers, who weighed into the 148 open class, do a full meet and pull 500 on her third lift. One of the most impressive things I have ever seen. Results haven’t been posted yet on SPF’s site.

Did my first powerlifting meet yesterday. IPA New Jersey State Championship in Newark, amateur raw division.
Orignally entered in the 198 weight class, but ended lossing 10lbs and weighed in at 181 morning of the meet.
Squat: 295, 325, 345
Bench: 205, 220-failed, 220
Deadlift: 385, 420, 440

I’m hooked. Looking forward to doing my next meet.
Might see me their since I go to school just outside Newark.

Going to do my first meet: CPF Battle of Montreal, January 29th. Gonna lift raw.

Current lifts:

250 Squat
190 Bench
340 Deadlift

@ ~160 lbs

Staring Texas Method next week, with DE work on the recovery day, and for deads in place of the power cleans. Anyone have opinions on that, am I too weak to bother with DE?

Other lifts:

Parallel box squat: 230
Military Press: 110 x 5

I did my second USAPL meet Dec. 4, in Fife, Wa. I am in the M1/242 Raw division. I went 7 for 9 with all whites except for the two failed attempts. My last squat attempt was for the state record in my division, but I got stuck in the middle and missed it.

Squats: 185/407.9 (3w), 200/440 (3w, Meet PR +55lbs.), 212.5/468.5 (fail)

Bench: 125/275 (3w), 137.5/303.1 (3w, Meet Pr +38lbs.), 142.5/314.2 (fail)

Deads: 210/463 (3w), 200/485 (3w), 227.5/501.5 (3w, Meet PR +77 lbs., Lifetime PR +1.5lbs.)

Total: 565/1244.6 (Meet PR +178.6 lbs.)

I have two meets planned close together, that has worked fine in the past for me.

January 29 SPF Tenn., and March 5 SPF Ironman

I will be competing single ply due to training conditions, it is really hard to go multi ply in a campus rec center…

For the January meet
Looking to open with 705/435/555 @ 242, 19 y/o… Hoping to end with 800+/500/600-625

For the march meet open 720/445/565, and end with new PRs over the January meet… with that short of a time frame any PRs is pretty much all I can ask for.
All that is still subject to change depending on training, ect around those times.

woo just competed in my first meet on saturday. USAPL American Open in philly.
i registered for the 148 wt class when i was about 153 and thinking about just competing in the 165 cause it was my first meet. however, a week full of exams and papers = lots of caffiene, lack of sleep, lack of eating.
I didnt eat from 6pm the night before, and just chewed gum and spit out saliva on the way there. i got there late with about 6 mins left and was 0.2 lbs over and they told me i should try and get the weight off. jumped rope in 2 hoodys and sweats and kept spitting and i just barely made it ha.

anyways i was with my college club so they helped me out a bit.
collegiate division 148 lbs
squat: 250, 275, 305 (not sure the exact number bc they were in kgs, but around that.) last lift felt easy and def had at least 10 or 15 lbs more.
bench: 175, 205 2w, 215 3r. on the second lift my butt came off the bench a tiny bit at the very end of the lift. and i couldnt get 215 at all.
deadlift: 275, 305, 350 PR. cant remember pulling over 300 so its a pr ha. all felt really easy and felt like i coulda done another 25 lbs.

I bought my belt earlier in the week and this was the first time i used a belt really. I like it a lot and felt it helped me. weights wernt extremely heavy but i made most of my lifts (8/9) and followed the commands real well. feel like i can only go up from here so thats good. I want to compete in the spring semester but the only meet that my club does is natls and im almost 200 lbs off the totals. Even though i cant compete, ill still train following some sort of cycle.
