Figured I would post my results in here as well. I competed yesterday at the APA First State Power Frenzy in the raw 220 open class.
I went 9/9, going 500/370/545, all of which were PRs. Sorry no video as my camera had no juice.
Novaeer, again, great lifting.
Crash, good luck in the 21st. I will be competing on the same day in an SPF meet in Arkansas. I wouldn’t call your dead weak, just a chink in the armor.
I will see you there. Are you going raw or equipped?

Competed in the SPF Arkansas Christmas Classic in Russellville today(Raw/Open Division).
550- Squat
385- Bench
500- Deadlift
1435 Total
I missed locking out 400 on bench by 2=3 inches and I tweaked my back in warm-ups for deadlift, so I just hit my opener. That is the perfect example of how to choose openers, I think. I picked something that i could pull even when I could barely stand up straight.

Nice job! And a wise move on the attempt picks.
Thanks RL. I had a great time, even though I suffered a minor set-back. On a sidenote, do you still play? I would figure you to be a scrumhalf or maybe fly. I started at second row and moved to No.8 in my day. Now, I just watch.

My squat just wasn’t there today, I only hit my opener. I also went a little conservative on my bench so I would still have a little bit left in the tank for my deadlifts. The turnout was a little smaller, but this was the first year for this meet, and I’ll be looking forward to see what the turnout will be next year.
Very nice numbers, Crash. Are you a single ply guy? And you said you were a little conservative on the bench. What’s your PR?

Nice lifts, and that was a good call with picking an easy opener. I am a big fan of picking an easy opener
Just had my first meet here in Switzerland this weekend, november 22nd, Raw. Usually weighing 169 lbs (76kg), dieted down till 162.6 lbs (73.2 kg), thanks to weeks cardio and last minute fasting. SOO glad I could do it!
In the bench competition, Beginner’s division, made it 4th, with my opener 222 lbs (100kg). Missed twice 233 (105kg).
In the full comp, made it 9th on 10 contestants.
Squatted - 333 (150kg)
Benched - 228 (102.5 kg)
D-lifted - 388 (175 kg)
Total - 949 (427.5 kg)
At squat and bench, these were my previous record numbers, but got over my DL by 22 lbs, on the 9th lift.
I was so worked up then, even though I was tired. Felt like I was high, when I made the last lift! F***ing angry!
One thing sucked though : meet went from 9 am (weigh in), till 10 pm… Too damn long!
All in all, I made all my goals (get in the 165 category and beat my total), so I’m really pleased.

Great to hear you got your first meet under your belt, Thorpughet. But, let me correct you on one thing. You sad that your bench and squat were equal to your personal best, but that’s not accurate. All of your gym lifts are just training. The only one’s that matter are in the meet ;-). Why was teh meet 13hrs? That’s insane.

Haven’t played competitively for about a decade (since University). After that I used to get involved in pick-up games and things. I was planning on getting back into it a couple last year, but choose powerlifting instead. I’ll likely play some “old boys” rugby in a few more years, but I want to focus on lifting at the moment.
As for posiiton, I played either hooker or centre depending on the team. I preferred hooker but I had good hands, accurate passes and a tendency to sacrifice my body (evidenced by concussions and a missing tooth) to make plays so I was frequently but in as a centre to help get the ball outside and create overlaps.

Hooker? Really? From reading some of your other posts, I wouldn’t have figured you as a psychotic type. It’s a very brutal position. My hats off to you, mate.

Thanks! Actually, I’m pretty proud of my numbers. Next year, if all goes well, I’d like to qualify for the European championships. Don’t know the totals needed, but I do know that I’m under them.
Vice World Champion (Girard Pascal) 15:30 â?? 16:00

Billinger Christian 20:00 â?? 20:30

All of this could have gone with this timing, if one contestant hadn’t sprained an ankle at squats (we waited 45 min for the ambulance to take him to the hospital) and another one hadn’t let his 700 lbs bar fall to the ground in Equipped Squats.
All I wanted to do at 6pm, was to get the f*** out of there…

Thanks for the advice guys! Sounds like I should find a competition around Cincy and sign up. Is there a listing of all the meets around an area somewhere? Is there a specific type of meet I should search for?
There’s a meet on Feb. 6th about an hour & a half away in Columbus. The Lexen ProAm. The EliteFTS amatuers usually lift at Lexen sponsored meets. You should come up. It will be my 2nd meet. PM me if you’re interested. I’d even extend my hospitality as I feel the sentiments shared on this site about Powerlifting being a “family” I have found so very true and is what has drawn me to the sport.
I train a 148lb female that also attended her 1st meet in October with me and she set 6 new American records, including a 257lb squat & 298lb dead lift. We both have caught the powerlifting bug and it has consumed our way of life. It’s very popular here in Columbus with Westside & Elite being so close by.
I’ve only read thru the first couple pages of this thread but your posts intrigued me, as I have similar numbers, live in Columbus, and am in the same weight class. I did my first meet in October at a NASA event in Springfield. Very low-key, 30 entries. Had a 343 squat, missed 408. Benched 237, missed 254. Deadlifted 452, no misses & 452 felt easy. I had never done more than 405 in the gym, but adrenaline was flowing. I was the only Raw 198’er there so naturally I took first (but it was still awesome to get a trophy). Everyone else at 198lbs had gear on. I actually weighed in around 195 but have recently dropped down to 185 whilst numbers are going up, so I’m not mad at all. Going to try 181 at the Feb meet since I’m getting stronger while cutting.
Looking forward to hearing from you if you are interested in attending. It’s an IPA meet by the way. Google LexenXtreme for more info on the meet.
I have my first meet in Fife, Washington, a USAPL full power meet, on December 5th. I plan on competing Raw and I want to compete in the 220 class, but I doubt that will happen after this weekend. :). This week I am performing triples of my probable openers on each lift on its scheduled day.
I will pick my openers tomorrow after Squats and then Tues. next week I am going squat, bench, and pull singles up to my opener, then rest until Sat. Does this sound like reasonable prep? Any other tips or comments for an old dog trying to learn new tricks?

I’ll be stepping on the platform this Saturday in South Alabama, APA’s Irontoberfest. I’ll be competing in the 181, raw division. Plan is to open 475/335/525.
Gotta bump this one up…
Did pretty good this weekend. Went 505/350/575 for 1430 @ 181.
video in my training log.
Very impressive, your total is what I’m striving for.
I am competing in Feb at 181lbs in my 2nd meet. I just started powerlifting this year, using 5/3/1 to just simply get strong(er). The only dynamic day I incorporate is bench b/c mine is so weak (got 285x1 last week w/3 board, new PR). Squat/dead are trained mon/fri with 5/3/1 format. Bench is wed/max effort, sat/dynamic effort. Your numbers are where I’d like to be one day. I’m still in that beginner phase of training where I get a new PR almost each training session. I realize this effect tapers off quickly. If I am currently 340/240/450, how long does it take to build up to where you are at?
Also, last question, I read on EliteFTS that to even consider incorporating “advanced techniques” you should be 1.5 times body weight benching, 2 times body weight squatting & 2.5 times body weight deadlifting. I am close to these numbers but am still making steady progress with 5/3/1. When do I start using bands and chains? I have 2 full sets of bands that were given to me by a retired Westside Pro that we know and (2) 30lb chain sets. I have NOT used either of these methods yet. I have used a 2 board and 3 board press and have seen a 30lb jump in bench since the Oct meet using these. When does a beginner know when to start using “advanced techniques”?
I’m doing my first full meet in 9 days at CPO Ontario Provincials. Had a hectic training cycle leading into this meet, so not sure what entirely is gonna happen. I’m squatting in an Ace squatter, no briefs or knee wraps, benching in my coach’s SDP (blew my phenom out on monday :S) and pulling in a pair of Preds.
Looking to open at 285/240(245)/195 kgs in the teen 308’s. when all is said and done i’m hoping to squat mid 7’s bench 562 (taking a shot at 600, pec injury permitting) and pulling 5. yeah i know… my pull sucks

I have never done a meet in the USAPL, but I am familiar with the squat judging from lifters who have competed in the fed and from judges. Make sure that you can take whatever weight you choose as your opener “convincingly” parallel. If you have any doubts, see if a judge can watch a warmup set and tell you if you are hitting depth or not. Not saying that they definitely will, but they are there for you so most are willing to tell you.
Personally, when I choose my openers, it’s always going to be a weight I can comfortably triple. The second lift is the moving lift. And the third is where I shoot for the moon. I think PMPM competes in the USAPL and I know Modi and Phil Wylie have recently hit USAPL meets. Maybe they will chime in and give you some “insiders” tips.
