Post-Workout drink before bed?

Hello fellow T-people,

maybe some of you have the same problem:

I can workout only in the evening, come home around 10 pm and try to get to bed as fast as possible. Now from what I understand, normally a whey protein shake is best after workout, on the other hand a casein containing product should be used before bed-time. So what do I do? What do you do/recommend? Of course I would be very happy to hear from the nutrition guys at t-mag, JM Berardi and Cy Wilson…

Thanks,

Marutenho

Ok, it’s not about MAG-10, but still, is no-one
interested in this? Thanks for any answers

Good question, I may have to start training later in the evening myself. Does anyone have any insight on Surge before bed? Or should I drink Surge at the gym then try to eat another meal upon arriving at home? In faith - Matt Slaymaker

I have the same problem too, up early - home late! I have been drinking surge during my workout as per the article a few weeks back - and whey gets digested pretty fast, so about 30/40 mins after I finish training i consume a loveley pudding I read about on here. Low/non sugar angel delight of pudding mix, with a large tub (i go for about 1.25lb) tub of low-fat cottage cheese - this has been one of the best things i have done, as my recovery is alot better, and size gains have come quicker than usual. Try it - let us know if it works

I think part of the answer might beg this question: What is your diet goal, to add weight or lose weight?

You really do need to consume another meal before bed. From the first round of Surge results, it was shown that the Macros were in and out of the blood within about an hour. If you don’t eat again, your daring the anabolism to cease and catabolism to begin again in a sense.

True I should have mentioned my diet goals. Lets put it this way: I aim for quick recovery,
also I am on the Ian King Limping series, which
to me make more sense when trying to gain muscle. Since I am often too lazy to count calories I try to do intuitive zig zagging of the calories to loose fat and increase lbm.

Thanks for the reponses, I will try the cottage cheese thing …

Just take the Surge as recommended. Either half during the workout and half later, or the full serving immediately after.

Why don´t you have two shakes. One surge after training than one with caseinate and some fructose in it waiting to consume when you get home ?

I would say, if your recovery is in high demand, as mine is as well, take the surge before(I’ve had really great workouts since taking it before, even better than EC stacks) and one immediately after. Take it with you to the gym and slam it right after. If you half your surge shake, the one after won’t fill you up very well so you will probabably be hungery in an hour anyway. I know I am. Now do all the things you need to do and in around just one hour drink another one with casein in it. Add some low glycemic carbs to it to replenish your glucose levels also. This should help out alot. Just another tip, one I’ve learned with recovery is this. After you get home, take a contrast shower. Hot for around 5mins and cold for around 2.5mins. Do this for around 3-6 times. This really helps blood flow. This is another GREAT tip for recovery. (Massage once a week is another wonderful way to recover). It will also help give you time to get ready for the second shake after an hour. Hope this helps. Let me know how its worked for you. I know these techniques work for me!

Split your Surge. 1/2 during, 1/2 RIGHT after. An hour later, eat your cottage cheese and go right to bed.

Minutia. Questions like this appear here regularly. I eat every 2-3 hours no matter if I am bulking or dieting. I eat the same kind of food during bulking and dieting, just the calories are different. I work in all three possible shifts, so I go to the gym in the morning, in the afternoon and in the evening. I have to restore the muscle glycogen immediately after the workout, so I really do not care what time of the day it is and I could not care less that I ate carbs one or two hours before going to bed. Neither should you.
Another question people ask is “should I eat in the evening”. Yes, you should. You live during the evening just as you live during the day. If you ate 2.5-3 hours ago, it is time to eat again. Eat, eat, eat, sleep, sleep, sleep, train, train, train. Grow. Shed fat. Repeat until dead.

Choad,
That is what I was thinking too! Just wanted other opinions since Marutenho brought it up!

I’ve been training for a year and a half, starting workouts at 11:30pm most nights. Finish by 12:45 or so. I throw a banana into the first postworkout drink, then drink another an hour and a half later before bed.

I’ve gone from 132lbs to 170lbs doing this, under 9% bodyfat the entire time. I’m wondering if the late night workouts are working against me though, listening to all the “sleep is catbolic” talk in other threads.

Cottage cheese tip sounds good, I’ll add that one too

  • Eat, eat, eat, sleep, sleep, sleep, train, train, train. Grow. Shed fat. Repeat until dead.

That is the funniest thing ive read in ages, off topic but that really brightened up a shitty day, my life to a T. Cheers

The pudding mix is there for taste only I asume? Of course you don’t get that brand here (in Germany), so I’ll have to experiment a bit. I am not aware of a source for Surge either, I’ll improvise on that part as well …

Contrast showers … ugh … takes a real t-man to do that huh? Anyway, I’ll try it. No problems with muscle soreness? I’m asking because I tried sauna once after the workout, and I felt that immediate soreness was increased. (And I just love to wait those two days for the peak of DOMS

I’ll let you know about the results.

Thanks for the response. Maybe I wasn’t too clear about my dilemma: Its not that I am “afraid” of eating before bed, its more that I try to get to bed as soon as I return from the workout. … you know … that sleeping thing … Up to now, I didn’t feel like staying up longer just to get another meal in. Maybe I’ll change my priorities and see how that goes.
