Judging someone’s training knowledge SOLELY on what they look like is stupid.

Even CT himself said that some people didn’t take him seriously because of what his body looked like. That’s why he decided to transform his physique:
Strawman. What has been said is that if a person isn’t well developed AND HASN’T TRAINED ANYONE ELSE TO BE, they shouldn’t be the focus of much attention for those with a goal of really big muscles and above average strength.

No one here is saying to only look at how huge someone is.

No one is saying every big guy on the planet can help you reach a goal.

No one is saying to avoid people who are big like CT was but not as big as he is now.

If any of you want to make up some more nonsense to pretend as if someone is arguing that, just let me know.

Unless some skinny guy at the gym has trained huge mutherfuckers to get huge, why the fuck would I waste my time on them?
LOL. You’re the one making up stuff. I like how you change the premise of the thread for the sake of your argument. The OP never said anything about “training someone else,” in addition to what they look like. He was discounting the advice of others if they didn’t look the part.

Read what I wrote again - “Judging someone’s training knowledge SOLELY on what they look like is stupid.”
Chances are slim that people who look untrained (or like most personal trainers in commercial gyms lately) know how to get someone to the level that someone like me is after. That is what I am arguing as well…unless that guy has some huge roster of well developed athletes he has trained.

Pointing out one or two people who are outliers doesn’t change that.
Why do you keep acting as if you wrote the OP and instead of Mens Health look wrote, Dorian Yates look? You didn’t say that, he did say that, stay on topic.

V
?

He wrote AT LEAST like a Men’s Health look OR BETTER. Why are you arguing against what is being said? How many people here even look like they are carrying the muscle of even the guys on Men’s Health Covers? Hell, when did Men’s Health cover models start to look untrained like some of the jackasses here giving advice?
And you took that to mean “MASSIVE BODYBUILDER” ?? Eh? Mens Health? what 5’7" 175 Lbs ripped? Half the High school seniors in this country look like a damn Mens Health Cover.

Do you want me to start posting mens health covers?

V
His statement as written sounds like he cares what a Men’s health cover model says? That is like me saying, “at least graduate high school before you tell me about how the human body works”. That doesn’t mean I want to learn from someone who just graduated high school.

So herschel looks better and more muscular than a mens health cover right? I mean you can agree to that right? Yet if you saw someone in the gym you would say. Hmmmm I’ll take that guys advice if I want to do cardio all day long and maybe lift a weight or two here or there?

So what is it? Guys that look like him know what they are talking about or they don’t? Admit it, if you wrote the OP you would have said looks like Dorian Yates. Not Looks like Mens health or better.

Back to CT’s Transformation. You think the OP would have considered CT’s before pics as “better” than Mens Health cover?

Uhm, Walker isn’t more developed than me so yeah, I just might say that because I wouldn’t go to him for advice about how to get big when I am bigger than him. Understand? I mean, shit, someone who looks like that clearly workout regularly so why would you believe no beginner could learn something from him?

Gee, I don’t even want to look like Dorian Yates. If I had to pick any top guy right now who looks like I would like to, it would be Ced McMillan.

Read above. How many huge fuckers are walking around that you think you could learn NOTHING from?

Why would I go to someone way smaller than me for advice about how I should get bigger?

FWIW:

Years ago I took an adult painting class with a distinguished professor of art. She had been teaching art for over 3 decades and had earned the respect of countless peers and students. Within 3 weeks of participation in the class, it was very evident that not only was I the best painter student by far, but was also a measurably better painter than the teacher.

Regardless of this fact, I learned many valuable lessons from her and came away an even better artist.

If I had seen her work prior to signing up for the class, I would never have taken it.

LMFAO!

This has been fun reading.

OP, as Dan John says, “everything works…for a time.”

Lift progressively bigger weights, eat a lot of clean food and get plenty of sleep.

Read as much as you can in the meantime. Keep what makes sense and throw out what doesn’t. Develop some “go-to” routines that you will re-visit every so often for sure-fire gains and try new things when you’re not on that one.

DB

P.S. That is me in my avatar, so disregard the above if you deem it poor advice.

Precisely. The best coaches/teachers were rarely the best athletes in their profession.

You should be able to learn SOMETHING from just about anyone. That homeless guy on the corner may not be able to help you with your taxes, but he can damn sure let you know how you DON’T want to live or maybe even how ineffective anti-psychotics can be in some people.

Your arguments get ridiculous. All we’re saying is not to automatically discount advice just because the person doesn’t have a great physique. You take that to mean that we want people to ignore bodybuilders completely and take advice from skinny kids only.

Simplify life - just listen to me.

Thank You, Thats is exactly what I’m trying to say.

X, you keep saying that YOU would not ask the advice because you are bigger. By OP’s Stance, I can only assume he is no where near your development. I know being as large as you are smaller bodies do in fact revolve around you, But the earth ins’t a smaller body, so lets try not to make everything all about you and what you like or find valuable.

That depends on WHAT that advice is. Once again, what throws a huge dividing line into this argument is what the fuck the goals are of the trainer in question. NO, some little dude does NOT know how someone should bench press 405lbs or more. NO, some little dude does NOT know how I should train to get my arms to 21" after they hit 20. He would have basic knowledge at best up to his own level of development.

That is why there is a huge fucking difference between advice for some “fitness trainer” who may or may not hit the gym 2-3 times this week and that given to some guy who wants to gain another 100lbs.

Yes, you likely should discard the advice of people who have never been where you are trying to go and have never been with or trained anyone else who has either.

If you are speaking of basic advice like “eat more to gain weight”, then you are the one missing the point.

I think the core problem with “out of shape guy advice” is that you have to see credentials to belive it. More importantly, there are more out of shape dudes giving advice that don’t know what they are talking about than out of shape guys that do. So why risk it when only 1 in 20 fat dudes know what they are talking about.

When you see a big guy lifting, he carries his credentials on his frame, no need to ask for anything extra.

^^Did you read the Avatar Suggestions thread? pretty much exactly what you’re talking about.

This is a never ending debate/request. Lots of people give out advice without pictures and the same people who have pictures up request pics from the anonymous/pic less members. Just except it now… Its not gonna happen.

Just read a lot and you’ll figure out who has solid advice and who doesnt. For the most part you should only take Jim Wendler’s and Prof X’s word as gospel.
Ehh… yeah I suppose you’re right to some degree.

But look at Vince Gironda. That fucker was nicely shaped, but small. Somewhere along the line he got a reputation for training men up to their potential. And that’s really the key word here.

In that same regard (and contrary to your argument) why would big Kai Greene go to “small” Charles Glass for training advice?

Actually, there’s so much gray area in these arguments it’s ridiculous to continue.

Once again, Charles Glass was fucking huge back in the day. Why would anyone who follows bodybuilding ignore his past progress just because he is older now? There actually is no gray area. If you have trained people to get big, then you qualify. If you haven’t, you don’t. If you have built yourself up, you qualify. If you haven’t, you don’t.

Therefore, small fuckers who have trained no one else to get big have no credibility to be telling other big people how to get even bigger.

Period.

What the hell would some 150lbs guy who looks nearly sedentary know about how I need to train to get even bigger?

Roelly’s trainer is an old woman who looks the least likely to know about bodybuilding…but she has trained HIM and many other people to get really big, therefore, she has cred that no other skinny person without that will ever have.

What is “gray” about that?

Wait. I’m out of the loop guys. where and when are those CT pics from?

So, what about this guy? Can he teach me anything about growing my arms beyond his own development? I think he probably could. In fact, I would probably take his advice over yours, no offense.
