Personal Challenges in the Gym

What are some of the gym challenges you attempt just to mix it up from time to time?

I think I’m going to try the 50 pull-ups in 5 minutes challenge tonight.

Give me your best challenges.

Here are a couple of fun ones:

Farmers Walk with the heaviest dumbbells in the gym up about 25-30 yds and back

Deadlift 405 as many reps as possible

Deadlift 495 as many reps as possible (or whatever works for you)

Deadlift strongman style, start with 365 (or whatever works for you) do a rep, add 50 lbs, do a rep, with no rest, see what you can get.

Push a car in the parking lot during leg day

Do sprints outside on the hottest days just because you can

Bench 225 reps

Bench 315 reps (or whatever works for you)

Do a Muscle-up

Do 100 push-ups, toes on a physioball

Max out on curls, go for your bodyweight

Clap pull-ups

Run .25 miles as fast as possible, hopefully 12 mph on the treadmill

Row 500 M as fast as possible, hopefully <1:30

That should hold you for a while. Take it easy

I find the most challenging challenge is to take the squat or deadlift to max. Do sets of one until you can’t.

I pushed my truck 3 blocks once while my brother steered and it was the most intense full body workout I’ve ever had. Felt like 100 sets of squats just in my quads. On problem was every neighbor asking if I needed a jump as I worked my way down the block.

Um…

That MIGHT be a challenge for my girlfriend…

The other ones look decent though. I like Big’s most of all.

My favourite is doing no hands push-ups.

Doing 2 more reps than I did last time. Every time.

  • cutting the cables in the smith machine without getting caught

  • throwing away all of the candy@ssed neck pads and covering them with debris such that they can not be found

  • trying to figure out why all of the trainers are in worse condition than the people they are training

  • hogging the power rack for as long as possible without someone asking if i am using it / when i will be done (this one actually quite achievable)

  • making it through a session without getting asked some rEdiculous question about what muscle that works or what i am training for

  • snatch the heaviest db (150)

Okay, I gotta ask…what is a clap pull-up??

Do one dip with good form with your body weight hanging on the dip belt. I have seen my lifting partner do this granted he weighs 180 but he is one tough bastard.

One of my favorites is doing snatches holding 4 ten lb. plates together, watch out for bystanders.

You wouldnt be saying that at my gym. John Parella who used to play pro football for the SanDiego Chargers is from my town and he had DB’s up to 205 that he used. Could you farmer walk 50-60 yards with 410 hanging from your arms???

Do a pull-up, but get an extra pull so you have time to clap your hands and then get them back on the bar. Just like a clap push-up but harder. It is fun to try, hard just to get your mind to take your hands off the bar when you are doing a pull-up, at least for most non-gymnasts.

But if you can do 15-20 pull-ups you should be able to do it with practice. This comes from Crossfit, which I know gets bashed on here but they have some good exercises.

Of course it depends on how heavy the dumbbells are. My gym has 150’s and they aren’t as easy as it seems and my grip is pretty good. They seem to be extra thick. Case in point I put on a local strongman competition and most of the competitors struggled with them, it was 40 yards up and back, and these guys weren’t weak in other lifts.

Some had done farmers walk with heavier stuff, but the thicker dumbbells if they aren’t held in the middle (of course with no straps) can get tough. And if it is easy remember once you can do the course, you go for time, so try to run with 120’s, or 150’s, or 200’s or whatever you have and I know that will be tough.

If you still want to go heavier get creative and use the trap bar for farmer’s walks, do that with 5 or 6 plates you will get a workout.

I might try the clap pull-up if i ever cut down to 170 again. At 220 I dont think ill be trying that, that and the pull-up/dip station isnt bolted to the floor.

I havent been in the lifting game long enough to know what a muscle up is.anyone care to tell me?

We’re going to be having a NFL style bench press contest soon at work. 225 pounds x failure. Most reps wins.

A muscle up is a pull-up where you push yourself up over the bar and then transition to a dip, so at the end you are the above the bar with your arms straight, pointing down, on the bar. Kind of like what you do to get out of the pool on the side, but there is no water to help you. It is also on crossfit. Pretty challenging but again doable with practice.

Tire Running. You cant do it inside a gym, so just try to find a gravel field, or you could always just use the street. Its pretty basic; get a piece of rope, and a tire. Tie one end of ope to the tire, the other around your waist. Now give’er

Dude, whoever mentioned the tire stuff, THANK YOU!!! I finally have an idea on what to do.
