Good luck with your gym, man. I do agree that if I had never heard of Ronnie Coleman (of whom I own every single training video I believe), that MetroFlex would sound kind of weak…however, because I know who he is, it sounds just the opposite. Take care of business.

I am going to have to disagree here. If Ronnie Coleman lifted at “Nancy Boys”, that wouldn’t make it sound any less weak.

I am sure the place has history and whatnot. Just the name makes it sound like people are gelling up their hair before they lift.

Trust me, if Coleman had trained the same way at Nancy Boys, everyone would feel exactly the same. It would be like calling big guys “Tiny”.

I doubt their goal is to attract the “average gym goer” anyway. Most of their potential costumers have heard of Coleman.
And even more importantly, if someone picks a gym because of it’s name rather than the equipment/atmosphere, that says a whole lot more about them than any “weak” name…

no prob AmandaSC! Id be glad with any positive or negative comments about what a hardcore gym is…especially from a woman’s point of view. I’m going to have two bathrooms one for men and one for women–but what other ideas do you have to attract women other than self-defense classes and ladies night (where I have a pro female figure or bodybuilder be a guest trainer)? thanks for your help! Tom
I think the lines between hardcore and non have been blurred alot. I used to think it had to do with free weights vs. Machines. Now I realize that machines can play an integral part of building a great body. I guess the thing is that you only have so much surface area of the gym. So you need to maximize effective equipment in the space provided.

That being said, I guess a hardcore gym would have platforms, lots of racks, and things that you typically wouldn’t see in a normal gym. Pick whatever gear you like the best.

If I was in charge i would have a dip station and actual pullup bars. Not those fucking dip/pullup combo racks. And a T-bar anchored at some point. Not a T-bar station with a chest pad. I would also hang a rope from the ceiling to climb on. Things to make it unique. Seriously, you are spending the money, make sure to add a lot of the things that you personally like.

Also, all the plates must be made out of some form of metal. Real Iron Hexes. No stupid rubber dumbells. A bucket of chalk. Lots of bodybuilding posters.

Fucking awesome! I wish I had hardcore gym like Metroflex in my area.

rcsermas thanks for the intererst!!! Well I have it narrowed down to three places near the 635 and 75 intersection in north dallas…ofcoarse in a barebones mechanics made of steel garage type of building–no a/c with big bay doors so we can open them up for the beautiful texas days!

I want to keep the membership and training costs down so I am going to provide a fan or two–I have a much better workout when my muscles are warm anyways,(when it is cold outside I guess I’ll be working with space heaters and people wearing sweats). KEEPING IT HARDCORE!!!

I’m going to be competing at and have a booth at the Ronnie Coleman Classic at the Mesquite Convention Center to promote Metroflex Gym North–I’m going to be giving away free schwag (tshirts stickers), discounts, free trials, and free month’s memberships. Contact me if anyone is interested in attending or joining the show–or contact Brian Dobson at www.metroflexgym.com
thanks, Tom

Great!!! Just great bro!!! a rope a great idea!!! thats gonna happen!!! Your right about a big bucket of chaulk–but also im gonna sell amonia packs too!!! I’m getting a tractor tire, making the “fingers” from the world’s strongest man competition, also the log raise, keg throw, milk walk, stone lift from the WSM comps. I got a hex bar, and i’m gonna have to make my 200lbs. dumbells i think. ok well keep in touch!!! message me with any more great ideas! thanks tom

Please to High Heaven get a Glute-Ham Raise machine and Reverse Hyper machine from elitefts.com (Dave Tate’s company) Please! I’d go to a gym JUST for those 2 pieces right there. Besides the squat cage and cambered squat bar/safety squat bar, those are the two most important pieces of equipment a strength athlete (heck practically any athlete!) could have. I’d also throw in a sled for dragging weights/gpp/conditioning work.

I really hope this works out for you guys. We need more gyms like this.

No iron hex plates, please. I’m not moving to Dallas anytime soon, but NO HARDCORE GYM WORTH ITS SALT would use those plates. They are annoying to deadlift with. Just use circular plates. The only reason people like those plates is because they have those cute little handles on the ends because a real plate is too gosh darn hard for them to pick up!

me too man–so i made it happen

Glad you are going for your dream. You have a great model to follow. There are few issues I see already see. No AC during August when 120 plus hummidy…in a metal garage?

Also, there are a few gyms in the areas around 635 and 75 that you are going to have issues getting members. Life-time fitness…expensive as hell and alot of usless crap and La Fitness…brand new in the area with competive pricing for gyms. You also have the main stay of 24 hour gym. I would check it out but I workout for free at 24.

Good luck …

Ed

Well what I personally look for in a gym you seem to have covered. I want a wide variety of equipment to choose from and also want to be surrounded with people who are serious about training. I like the idea of the ladies night with the figure model to inspire women. The contests are a great idea. There aren’t many women who are into ‘hardcore’ weight lifting though and many women think they need to lift little dumbells and do aerobics to ‘tone’. These women would probably feel intimidate in an atmosphere like your future gym.

Attracting them to come to the gym and then educating them to keep them there is the challenge. This is where the fitness model would be a tremendous influence. Also be sure to hire women especially female trainers to make women feel welcome and comfortable. I’m not speaking for myself because I love my 90+% male dominated gym but I think women in general especially those just starting out feel more comfortable having a little bit of estrogen in the atmosphere.

Ed–i was wondering about the summer time too…have you ever been to the original Metroflex in Arlington? Yeah, it is exactly like you said a metal garage–he has two big ole’ round industral fans and a few ceiling fans…and people drive upwards of 30 mins just to work out there. do you think Ed that asking 5 dollars more a month up to 30$ or 35$ would be better than asking 25$ or 30$ an no a/c? or maybe having a mist area that people could turn on to cool off near one of the bay doors of the gym?

I work out at LA too–i blow that place out everytime; it just sucks that i get a chill when i first walk in the door and i’m the only one sweating–lord knows the only one making any noise. I actually go up to the big guys at any LA and talk to them about my gym after ofcoarse a while spotting eachother or something to break the ice–no pressuring though. Thanks for the comments Ed…but i bet if i could get better results for you at my gym you might pay the 25$ a month–and if you bring me three people you get your membership free. hows that sound? contact me!

Thanks for the great info!!! Women are going to be hopefully 10-20% of my gym…hopefully! thanks again Tom…keep in touch

Like someone else already said. Get some equipment that other places in the metro dont already have like the ghr’s and reverse hypers. Maybe have part of the parking lot converted to an area where strongman stuff like tires, sleds, and farmers walks can be performed. Without unique stuff a “hardcore” gym wont be enough to attract people from more than 30 minutes away (like me). You’re going up against the likes of stroud’s fitness and metroflex so you gotta get something they dont. Just my 2 cents.

oh and squat bars like the safety squat bar and cambered bar with chains and such would be a nice addition. Just a couple of favorites haha

Check out the pic of one of the properties I’m looking at note the large dirt parking lot for events to the left of the shot!
yeah the area for the strong man events will be a must! the chain gang for real, they are a must! Actually I’m going to be a Metroflex Gym North ravell–I’m working with Brian Dobson on this franchise. So I’ll definatly have his support and he’ll even be a guest trainer (you know he holds a world record now for the natural deadlift 50 year old catagory 825+ lbs). Thanks for the great advise and I hope you do make the trip to come see me–check back soon or even my other site http://www.metroflexgymnorth.com to see when the doors will be opening! Tom
