One-Arm Snatches

What is considered a good number to shoot for in the one-arm snatch? I was able to pull a 110# dumbbell today

Im thinking 135#, but I’d have to start doing oas’s with a barbell and i have no fucking clue how to manage that :stuck_out_tongue:

xen, I saw your title to this and expected some sort of fetish thing goin on… guess not.

this gives ya a percentage of body weight you should be able to do to consider yourself STRONG

ixnay the percentage comment I made earlier, it shows how many pounds you should be able to do

Goddamit I hate dan john (hate in a good way) haha!

I have to 155#???

oh ^^ that picture above is for your fetish assumption, that as close as I could get to a 1 arm snatch lol.

OAS are great are’nt they! Everyone looks at you as if your crazy lol.
I’m in the same boat as you woth regards to #'s. 47.5kg x 3sets of 3. Have’nt tested a single in awhile though.
Try using an EZ bar to do it - play around with how much you rotate the handle before gripping - i think if you have the middle of the bar at its heighest to start then rotate towards you about 45 degrees then grip. I find it much tighter and easier to rip off the ground.
Good luck with your poundage
D

You could also spend 30$ on olmypic dumbell handles, or a piece of 2" pipe with good collars, or go to a real gym that has 200# dumbbels. Of course if you want to be authentic you must use a 7 footer in front of you…

The following is from an Editorial “How Far We’ve Come” by Fred Pulcinella on September 06, 2002. I have only excerpted the section regarding the one arm snatch, but the rest of the editorial is an excellent read as well.

…"Some of the accomplishments in those days were amazing, considering the limited eqipment available at the time. One particular incident stands out in my mind. Two lifters from the West Philadelphia gym got into a friendly debate as to who was better at snatching. They agreed to have a contest at the Annual York picnic.

What occurred was unbelievable, even by todays standards. Ron Walter, a 132 lb. Olympic lifter, did forty-five consecutive snatches with 135 lbs. The crowd went wild. But they hadn?t seen nothin? yet! Out came Jim Fitzgerald, a thirty-nine year old, 165 lb lifter who proceeded to do forty-SIX snatches with 135 lbs. Oh, I forgot to mention, Fitz did his snatches with ONE ARM!

In case you have trouble believing this story, it was done before York officials and a large crowd at the 1956 York Picnic and was written up in Strength & Health magazine. This was done training with just barbells and dumbells - no steroids, no creatine, etc"…

Coach Sommer

DAYUM! That’s a lot of weight for a one-arm snatch. Of course, it’s probably based on your height and weight, but I couldn’t imagine ever doing that much.

When I was doing some Renegade Training a few years ago, I worked out with a 55-80lb dumbbell for sets of 5 in the one-arm snatch, and that was at a bodyweight of about 145lbs at 5’4.

Now that I’m 160lbs, I’d probably need to be doing 100+ pounds. DAYUM!!!

One-arm snatches with a barbell are quite entertaining. The balance issue adds some nice extra challenge. I’d say give 'em a try, just make sure nobody is standing near you when you go for it.

I prefer dumbbells or kbells.

I have only done one arm snatches with olympic barbells nothing over 45kg yet.

I saw a picture of a weight lifter called Vasily Alexeev doing 105kg / 231 lbs.

Here’s the site

Xen- I have done a 100# once with each arm, with the 110# being my summer time goal.

I certainly want to do more, but I don’t know anyone personally that can even come close to 100#.

Most people that see me do them, or know that I do them appear to be a combination of amused/impressed/baffled.

I think bodyweight with the barbell is a good goal. It’s also a goal I gave up on a long time ago:) I never really progressed much past 135. I did do a two arm any how lift the other day with a 95 lb barbell and a 60 lb dumbell. The fluffers at my gym almost shit themselves!

I’ve only done these once with a barbell. The one advantage with one-arm snatches is that it’s easier to get into a full overhead squat with the weight held only with one hand than with two. I’m not saying that 135 with a barbell would be easy to do, but once you get the balance thing down, you won’t need to pull the bar as high since it’s easier to get under it.

110 is not a bad number. I’ve done 120 a few months back with a barbell. The hardest part is the balance issue, but that also brings into play some ancillary muscles which is what I’m shooting for anyway.

And your pull is a lot longer than with a regular snatch. My best muscle snatch is 175, but One armed is 135. I really should start doing these more often. At on time a had a whole conjugate style training scheme for the one arm snatch. One day ME with rotating one arm barbell snatches, Olympic squats and over head squats, and a repetition day doing dumbell swings or dumbell snatches. I used it for about 9 weeks and went from ~95 to 135 with the barbell. I don’t think there is a finer exercise for upper back and shoulders. Damn I am gonna have to try and fit these into my training.

Does anyone have a chart that includes pull-ups, and barbell millitary presses.

You are correct. I was thinking in relation to a power snatch. The pull is probably shorter than in a two-handed power snatch.
