Olympic Lifts vs. Speed Bench/Squat

Good thread…here are a few things i would say…

  1. I would actually say when it comes to training high level athletes in america more coaches, universitys, and strength coaches use olympic lifts than the dyanmic lifts…this is good and bad…i think if more coaches would keep there egos in check and not get so definsive about both style of lifts then both styles could be used effectively…such as in joe keens tier system…

  2. i like the oly hybids (power clean, hang clean, clean from pins, power clean from blocks) with athletes, i find there great and require much less time to teach…

  3. i find it very hard to beleive that many athletes out there need to or are ready to do either squats or benches with bands or do snatches and other top end oly lifts…hell most athletes i work with cant do single glute ham raise…and most have not the hip mobility to do quality squats…so i think there is much much more pressing issues with most athletes…than there ability to do speed squats with bands or high level oly lifts…rb

This is a little off-topic, but found it a good quote from Louie.

From a seminar video:

“What the hell do American Olympic coaches know about strength, they don’t have any lifters close to the top in the world.”

Great point Big Martin about the types of athletes you work with. I agree that a lot of people are way to quick to jump to the use of bands and chains. I’ve found that most collegiate athletes are really in need of rudimentary strengthening vs. cutting edge techniques.

Having said that, I will admit that I use bands a chains with a lot of my early training age athletes. I’ve found that by bringing the equipment out for about 2-3 weeks every 2 months, it’s a great way to increase their motivation and effort levels.

Sometimes, getting an athlete excited and motivated outweighs the need to follow what most people think is appropriate. Everyone knows that if you can’t get the effort out of someone, it doesn’t matter how good your program is.

I use all lifts with the guys i coach,
i also use bands to bring upweak areas with band good mornings, leg curls and pull aparts. the boys think it will be easy but can hardly do 15 pull aparts with an easy band.

Many coaches are selfish and cant see the wood for the trees most times.

I require an open mind from any athlete and the same shouldgo for the coavhes!
