Three days out from Western Canadians. Could be sharper, but feeling strong and overall feeling pretty good. Little heavier than I’d like, but factor in that I always weigh myself immediately post-workout in my workout clothes when I’ve had roughly 3-3.5L of fluid over the previous couple hours, and I figure I’ll be just fine. Not really doing much of a taper, but then again I don’t feel I’ve been diligent enough with my training over the past couple months to earn a full week (or longer) taper.[/quote]

Best of luck. I’m quite the fan of a non-taper taper.

Yeah, the “drop” taper seemed to work well for me last time. We’ll see how things go tomorrow.

Best of luck!

After not front squatting since November, then getting injured and just getting into squatting these past two weeks, I decided to see if I could front squat yet without pain. I hit a pretty easy, painless 94%. Not bad.

Front squat at the end.

Well, to those who wished me luck yesterday, thanks. Seems like I could’ve used it haha.

Had to do a bit of work to make weight, weigh-in was at 1pm and at about 12:10pm on the competition scale I was 105.6. Oops. Wound up having to do my official weigh-in twice, but by 1:30 I was at 104.82.

Opened at 135 in the snatch, hit it strong. Jumped to 140 for my second, ass shot up a bit off the ground and I kicked it out front just enough to lose it after a bit of a fight. Third attempt, 140 again, better position off the floor but I dived under it a bit, lost it behind me.

Opened at 170 in the clean and jerk, hit it strong. Jumped to 177 to put me ahead of the other guy in the 105s, lost position off the floor and kicked it just enough in front so that I couldn’t save it and stand up with it. With only one attempt left, went up to 179 to try to put me high enough so that my competitor couldn’t catch me. Felt strong off the floor but it pushed me back onto my ass.

So, all in all, 2/6, 135/170 for a 305 total and second place. Clean and jerk and total were competition PRs, but still overall disappointed with how I lifted (I’ve done 140 and 175 in training). Going to be looking to be much more consistent and hit a better total at nationals in a couple months.

Hard to be happy when you don’t do as well as you feel you could. Still, 5kg comp pb clean and jerk, equal comp pb snatch and new pb total is not to be sniffed at! 305 total is badass too. What would you need to win the nationals?

Well done man!

awesome vid, man, thanks for sharing. Sorry you couldn’t do better and take first but those are still some very respectable numbers!

Had 2 days off due to family stuff…the longest time I’ve had off since June. This mornings snatch session was terrible, timing was wwwaaayyyyy off. Went in from my PM session aaannnddd…

Thats’s 80kg on my total since April 2010 when I started at Crossfit Manchester with 80/100, I’m now 120/140. If I get another 40kg between now and 2013 I’ll be freaking made up, if I get half that it’d be decent.

I see you beat Justin! lol Do you guys talk much with each other or not really? How tall is the guy? I saw his video and he looked f0cking huge man! He is only 97.9kg! Looks like a solid 105 man! He did 293 in the end I think? What did the winner get?

Smash it next time!

Really sharp 120 mate! Looks very powerful and your fast under the bar!

80kg is HUGE. How much has your FS gone in that period?

It’s weird how you can have a poor morning session then you totally destroy it in the evening! Or have an amazing morning session then lift trash in the evening LOL.

My taper consisted of

10 days out: FS 175x2 new 2RM, Sn 115, CJ 145
6 days out, sn 115, cj 145, fs 170
3 days out, sn 115, cj 140, fs 170

Before I was about hitting 115 on most sessions and spiked up to 125 and a few at 120. CJ has been strong for about 4-5 weeks, not hitting less then 145 most sessions.

But I’m only training 3x a week so my taper isn’t needed much. The main thing is not FS a heavy triple before I lift makes quite a big different. If I’m hitting okay weights with FS first, come comp time if I ease up a bit I should feel a lot fresher.

Comp no2
31/03/2012 : Crystal Palace

Felt a bit nervous as I haven’t had to struggle to qualify for a British in ages. Even if I lifted so so I’d make the qualification but seeing as I’m moving up a weight class I needed 275, 2.5kg above my comp PB…

Bw 96.35 after a protein shake, triple pack of sandwhiches, apple, water…got to eat more but I’m literally full all of the time, been doubling up on lunches, but my weak point is getting in carbs for breakfast, I just feel too full after my protein shake.

Had a lot of prodium gold, creatine, coffee, creapump, relentless energy/ caffeine drink…felt pretty jittery LOL

warm ups
bar felt okay, not super light, but okay, way too full of water, kept going to the toilet like a race horse…belt felt tight

Sn
120
125 : equal comp PB
128 +3kg comp PB! Booyah! Suprised, got it over head and got up, job done

CJ
147 made 275 total, qualified for the British as a 105, nice! Means I’ll have competed at the British in 3 different weight classes :stuck_out_tongue: 85, 94 and 105 :P, started out as a 77
155 had to follow myself so 2mins, should have left the minimum increase of 1kg, then up it in the first 30seconds to 155, so I get a bit more time but did’t, next time I’ll use that tactic, so a bit fatigue for the Jerk, Clean looked good but the Clean was cut a bit short but no biggie at this weight, drive on the Jerk was always leaning forwards a tad, not good, bar in front

Chose to go to 158 next, Andy Reug first lift of 158 so it meant I had more time, he got 2 red lights, so he had to take his lift again, he made it so that was great for me, it gave me more time,
158 +8kg comp PB! Boom! I had about 4mins I think so I just felt much fresher heading out to take this lift, didn’t have to rush myself. I literally had about 3-5seconds left on my 155 attempt. Cn better, squat up felt tougher than the video, Jerk a tad forwards but I got my head through and I had punched the bar far enough back I could step through with my rear leg and recover it!

SUPER chuffed with the comp, 5/6 made my 275 total

128 158
286 +13.5kg comp total
3 PBs, can’t complain, a great comp for me, best in 13yrs. I don’t think I’ve ever gotten 3/3 in the Sn and it’s been so long since I made 5/6, best sinclair with 322 as well.

Koing

Bro was in action also. HIs 120 he had to follow himself but because the guy moved up that f0cked my bro up. He didn’t get 2mins but the remainder of the other guys 1min count that the previous guy had. I’m not 100% of the rules of this. But they did start the clock for the other guy and he is allowed to move up within 30seconds. Then I’m 50/50 as to what happens next

  1. Let the time go for the guy that is following himself
  2. Reset the clock to 2mins as the previous guy will end up following himself but not get a 2min count

He hit 3 PB’s, but he was disappointed. But hey +1 on the Sn and +1 on the CJ and +5 on his total isn’t bad right? Good to see him hungry for more though.

I’m on pretty good terms with most of the BC guys, we’re pretty friendly, and they’re all good guys. Yeah, he hit 293, and yes he does look massive for his weight. He didn’t have a spectacular day in the snatch but he jerked really well.

Winner totalled 311, 136/175.

Nationals at 105 actually has the potential to be VERY interesting. Within the last 4-5 months there’s been 5 guys who have totalled 300+ in competition at 105, one of whom has hit 325 in the past. Actually, if you take each of those lifter’s best competition total (that I’m aware of) from the last 5 months, you get 300, 305, 310, 310, and 311. So it could turn into a very tight race for the medals and will depend heavily on who shows up and what kind of shape they show up in.

Agreed - nice lifts and BIG congrats on the new totals.

Re: your brother’s clock issue. They were correct once the clock starts and the lifter calls for the increase then the next lifter is up on a 1:00 clock even if he was the prior lifter. He is not following himself at this point. See rules 6.5.14 & 15 of the IWF handbook:

When a competitor asks for a change of weight and still
has to take this heavier weight next, the clock is stopped
while the weight is changed. After the change has been
completed, the clock continues to run until the end of the
allocated time. When a competitor asks for a change and,
in doing so, follows another competitor, the normal one
minute (60 seconds) applies for the next attempt.
6.5.15 In case a request by an athlete taking consecutive attempts
changes the order and another athlete is called whose time
starts running, but he/she too asks for a change, as a result
of which athlete No.1 (originally called) is called again,
he/she shall be granted only one (1) minute.

This happened to Mendes as US Nationals. A good tactic if not good sportsmanship.
