False.
I can see your point about not celebrating mediocrity and whatnot, but I guess I just see it differently. Besides, I think the real measure of a lifter is what he’s able to lift on the competition platform with the clock running and three judges staring you down looking for a reason to give you a red light. So that’s how I test and measure my progress, instead of gym lifts.

I dunno man, I guess I just decided that my numbers are so average that what difference does it really make whether I compete or not. In the end, all I really care about is did I get better, did I make progress towards the goals I have set for myself. If, in a few years, I find myself a contender for a medal on at least a national stage, then it would make more sense to me to go out and put up a big total. But right now, the way I see it is, anybody can do 107/130, so why celebrate mediocrity.
It’s all about having fun. Competing is fun. It also helps keeping up the motivation to train. Also, you’ll get to know a lot of new people.

And that probably is a better barometer. My goal right now is to just keep increasing my maximums because the way I see it I can do 90% any day, so the higher the ceiling gets the higher my minimums that I can do any day become.

I agree, and that’s good, but I don’t want to just do it for fun. I want to legitimately become good at the sport. Not that those two are necessarily mutually exclusive, but becoming really good entails a higher level of intensity and focus than just doing it for fun, imo.

I can totally understanding where your coming from but it can be for fun and winning. 107/130 is NOT mediocre plus jonty is very right about just because you can do it in the gym doesn’t really mean you can do it on the platform. Now is the time to practice on the smaller stage not at the nationals when their may be a 100 or so people looking at you and several other very good competitors trying to edge up your weights.
Plus your not a professional athlete so if your not doing it for enjoyment you are not going to get a whole lot back.

I never said I don’t enjoy it, I enjoy the shit out of it. It can be absolutely one of the most frustrating things I’ve ever done, but I still love doing it, otherwise I wouldn’t bother lol. Still though, serious training and training “just for fun” are two completely animals with completely different mindsets. I’ve seen plenty of people who participate in sports just for fun and they never have/never will turn any heads. I personally am way too competitive to suck ass at something and be able to do it simply for the sake of enjoyment. I’ll either bust my ass to get better, or pursue something else. Anyway, that doesn’t mean one can’t enjoy it, regardless of how serious or not serious they consider themselves to be.
I will compete one day though. It may be soon or it may not be very soon, I don’t know. But I will do it.

that is how i felt, too. but then someone pointed out that since i was getting free coaching… and i took that point. to put something back to the sport that has given me stuff. boosts the numbers at any rate lolz.
all i really care about is my own progress, too. and i care more about improved quality of movement than i care about the quantity of weight moved… but oh wells. i actually enjoyed the comp so that is probably just as well… good that i can see it that way… would be a bit of a shame if i didn’t see it that way and it came down to compromising myself…

Kudos on the competition and the PR. Forgive me for possibly being way behind the times, but I seem to recall leg strength was always a big issue for you, and that when you finally got an oly specific coach he had you start doing high bar back squats (which I think would help address that issue). How’s that been working out for you?
thank you. my back squat has gotten better. partly neurological no doubt… but i also got 60kg for a triple and had a bit left in the tank whereas a few months previously had to yell and really give it my all to low bar back squat 60kg for a single. so i got stronger, yeah.
been having problems with painful / achy / almost injured / slightly injured feelings after a heavy training session. seems to take me quite a while to recover from a heavy session and i’m certainly not able to heavy squat every session. or even once a week, really. just at the start of the season at the moment and everyone is coming back after a lay off. will see how my work capacity goes this year.
i have osteoathritis in my ankles and possibly in my back from old fracture. it might be the case that loading will inflame them because of that. that i’ll always be a bit limited in my loading. or it might be that things come right as i get more conditioned. time will tell.
my legs are still pretty weak (hence the powerclean and powerjerk)

comp yesterday (first one of the year). looks like i’m going to have to get myself registered and do the comps etc properly. since i’m getting free coaching. sounds fair to me. i was thinking ‘i suck pretty bad so it is just embarrassing / pointless’ rather than ‘one really should support the sport since it has supported me’. anyhoo… i thought i wouldn’t really enjoy this competing thing… but turns out i do. so that is pretty good, heh.
for those of you who don’t know me: i suck pretty bad. not very strong.
weighed in @68kg after eating breakfast etc as i normally would. had a bit of a headcold…

Three days out from Western Canadians. Could be sharper, but feeling strong and overall feeling pretty good. Little heavier than I’d like, but factor in that I always weigh myself immediately post-workout in my workout clothes when I’ve had roughly 3-3.5L of fluid over the previous couple hours, and I figure I’ll be just fine. Not really doing much of a taper, but then again I don’t feel I’ve been diligent enough with my training over the past couple months to earn a full week (or longer) taper.
