Hi, normally I just lurk and read as the forum goes along, but today I have a quick question. Does anyone know of a web site where I might be able to get the nutritional profiles of different foods like say eggs, bananas, etc? I am trying to make sense of my food log and I want to figure out what my macronutrient and micronutrient intake looks like. Thanks.
Frank
I use the dietwatch program and i swear without it i would look like a matchstick. It has over 10,000 different foods and plus you can add your own. All i do is everytime i eat i just get on the computer and type in what i just ate. It is that simple. I first started using the program over a year ago so i wouldnt have a clue where to find the download link. Just look around on the net, you wont regret it.
Frank, you may want to invest in a copy of The Complete Book of Food Counts, by Corrine Netzer. It’s an invaluable aid and it’s only like five bucks or so. Also if you really want to get technical there is a book out called The Glucose Revolution (can’t remember the author…don’t have my copy in front of me but can get it if you’re interested) that talks about the glycemic index of all different types of foods and things you can do to lower the glycemic rating of foods.

That’s the best free resource I have ever found for that type of info. It’s searchable, has alot of raw, as well as name brand foods and even has a full copy of the database that you can download with Access so that you can search it on your PC without being on the internet (that last option requires some knowlegde of how Access works, though). Check it out: http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/cgi-bin/nut_search.pl try searching for something pretty generic like “banana”… you’ll see that you even get the vitamin and mineral content of the foods. It’s a very cool resource.
