New To All This

Hey guys. I’m a 17 yr old 5’7" 125lb skinny kid.

I’ve been meaning to put on some muscle for a while but was never motivated enough to actually do anything essentially because I didn’t know what to do and I didn’t just want to show up at the gym with no idea of what’s going on.

However, a few days ago, a friend of mine (named Lee) asked me if I would be his gym buddy. I said it would be great because we can keep each other motivated and so starting this Wednesday we plan to go to the gym 2-3 times a week.

So I started reading up. I found this site and read a whole bunch of articles (there are so many!), especially on diet. I don’t want to go all crazy early on so basically what I’m doing now is drinking as much water as I comfortably can, eating more meals (6-7ish), getting lots of protein, mixing fat and carbs as little as possible, and generally eating more. Is that good for starters?

When I go to the gym on Wednesday, Lee is going to kind of show me around. The only thing I’m worried about is he’s been working out regularly for a while, and he’s still a scrawny little dude (I’d say 5’6" 115lbs or even lighter). Granted, he’s younger than me, but still. Could that mean that he doesn’t work out right?

I mean, if he’s teaching me how to do stuff that isn’t putting weight on him, why should it put weight on me? I don’t know about his diet, but it could be that, since he doesn’t do anything with it.

Other questions I have are - Do I need a post workout drink? Should I be taking supplements? If so which ones? Should I be doing Cardio?

Any other tips you feel like giving me would be great. thank you for taking the time to help me out.

Just because the guy isn’t gaining weight dosn’t mean he isn’t doing the right exercises to gain weight. Chances are he isn’t eating enough.

Here are a couple simple tips

read the “are you a beginner?” thread at the top of this forum.

Use mostly big compound lifts

Bench press varaitons, deadlifts, squats, rows, pullups, etc

lift to get stronger, by either adding more weight to bar or more reps to the lift

if you are not gaining weight after a couple of weeks EAT MORE! it is pretty simple.

I wouldn’t worry about supplments yet, worry about getting to the gym consistantly first

post workout drink some choclate milk or something, if you stay consistant with your training get some surge.

don’t let training partners hold you back. The right training partner can really help you make progress, the wrong can hold you back.

DONT MAKE EXCUSES!

KEEP IT SIMPLE!

STAY CONSISTANT!

Don’t workout, TRAIN! “working out” just sounds like something you HAVE to do, and puts an image in my mind of someone going through the motions.

If you want to be trully motivated, don’t take him as a training partner. Instead, find someone who weight 50 pounds more than you and try to catch up to him.
