Mattis good lifts man what you weighing and age

Indeed some nice lifting in here! DLed 310 for 9 yesterday, damn that last rep was rough. Unfortunately DLing (probably my favorite lift) has been giving me headaches lately…Anyone else have this happen before? Truly sucks. I hit my 2.5 BW DL goal weeks ago (350), and was looking forward to kicking that PR in the face in my coming cycles… but this headache business is really getting in the way. I focus on breathing right, and don’t think that is the problem, also always hyrdated as well…so i dont know…

Other PR I hit was 3x10 60 lb weighted push-ups, which was nice.

I know this doesn’t help at all, but I remember reading about people getting headaches from heavy squats too. I believe it had something to do with producing too much tension in the neck/trap region. Not sure how they resolved it.

Try forcing air out slowly as you go through the lift. The reason people get headaches is because of the pressure that builds up during a big lift. Keeping all your air in is going to comtribute to this.

I’m not sure I agree with this advice, even if it is accurate. Pushing air against your belt keeps your body tight through the lift, and when you blow it out you lose tightness. I’d rather be tight and get a headache later than get loose on a big lift.

Here is a thread with Meat’s advice on breathing and bench, and I am pretty sure he advises the same for all the big lifts, DL and Squat included.

In short, I try not to breath during a big lift. If I have to breath, its at the top of the lift.

My .02 cents.

If I breathe on a Max attempt I usually pass out. Mainly deads and squats but no shit if I breathe during the Rep I am out like a light.

Thanks man. I’m 22, around 222 lbs. Height 6"3. Was down at 184 after a ACL/meniscus surgery in november last year, so I’ve gained quite a bit.

Good to hear Mattis. Just keep it. Real quick question though. You deadlift pretty wide I would not call it sumo but def not conventional either some where in the middle. But you squat really close or atleast pretty narrow compared to your squat. As long as your legs are you may want to try squatting with a wide or atleast wider stance. That’s where all your power comes from. That’s why 90% of powerlifters squat so wide. I would keep what you have now since close to a meet but, experiment when its over I bet you could raise your squat a couple of pounds almost instantly. If you do it for a reason such as past injury just ignore me. Also you have a petty weak loft the chest bench. Start rotating bench lifts like this and I promise you gains.

Week 1- Dead stop bench- set pins in saftey rack to chest or just inch off and start each Rep off pins. ME triple triceps accessories
Week 2- 2in board press- work up to ME 1-3reps and triceps accessories.
Week 3- Full Range against bands or chains- ME triple focus on exploding off your chest triceps accessories.
Repeat and beat your weigh or reps from the session before. Give 3 cycles and change the exercises some what.
promise this will help coming off the chest.

Good job on the lifts. I think I’ll keep up with your progress since we are around the same.

I’m not sure what my weight is today. I’ve upped my food intake and started taking some new supplements, but I am in the 215-220 range at 6’2 25.

I understand completely what you’re saying and I agree with you (about holding air to keep tight)

I hold my air during the bottom portion of the lift, say on squat, I hold it on the descent and in the hole, when I come out of the hole, I start pushing a bit of the air out as I stand up with it. Kind of like how a damn lets a bit of water through to keep the whole thing from busting.

If meat said something different, do what he said.

The reason that I deadlift a bit wide is that I have a really unproportional body. Super long torso and short arms and legs (I wear pants with 30 inch inseam at my height). Conv deads feels really really awkward. sumo deads are too tough on my hips so I found the sweet spot in between. I squat relatively narrow because I feel the most comfortable like that. I think it all comes down to weak hips… Wider stance is not a problem with my knee so I’ll give that another shot after the meet. Yeah my bench is really weak. Bench press has never been my thing, always been weak and struggled. It’s frustrating because my sq/dl has gone up a lot but the bench is slower. I do 531, been on it for half a year. Awesome advice, I’ll give it a shot! Don’t have bands/chains but I’ll do pin presses and board presses. Again thanks for advice dude, I always listen to stronger guys like you.

Yeah it did feel like it as well. Will probably aim for a 330lbs at the meet.

Good stuff man! I have a training log in another site but I’ll keep updating my PR’s in here. Do you have a training log? Regarding weight, I’m gonna cut back some after the meet. Don’t really like this weight, feel heavy, slow and unconditioned. I also don’t like the little belly I started.

Sorry bout the triple posting. Writing from my iPhone and it’s hard to navigate

I am only going to take five post. That’s around 90 grams a month. Good enough for me. I have made great gains without relying much on supplements. Just starting this to give me more ability to do more volume in the gym and get closer to a 500 squat.
