Never Walk Alone

Maschy, i’ve been looking for training pants, do you have any recommendations on any Nike ones?

see her bounce?

heh heh.

for me:

  1. learn how to get good tension in hips / lumbar spine in the bottom position
  2. speed that sucker up! (relaxed freefall descent into a tight bottom position to catch the muscular contraction bounce up)

YOur ass to grass squats are pretty. Love the videos.

Thanks for the love Nikki, Kimba, Nadia, MiM! Actually, my diet has been less than stellar the last two weeks and I’ve been taking in a lot more carbs then I’m used to, so my muscles look full and happy. At least that’s what I’m telling myself. HAH!

And MiM, I actually took the ATG question over to the Oly forum. So if anyone’s interested in that discussion, here it is:

Bottom line (IMO), going heavy on ATGs squats is good but also depends on what else you’re doing in your program. (stating the obvious is what I’m best at!)

Frenchie, lol. Whatever. But you understand my struggles of having to put the ego aside in order to correct form, and that makes me feel better.

Which is precisely why, Nikki, my front squats are catching up to my back squats. Grr…Oh well. They’ll just have to improve together, like high school sweethearts. Isn’t that nice?

I’ve never seen despicable me, btw. But I love Pixar and animated movies, so I totally will!

German - not sure on the Nike trainers tbh. I don’t normally buy Nike since they’re evil, altho I will be in one of their commercials and sport their cleats if given to me for free (sell out!). But I’m partial to soccer pants (obvi!) which are loose, but not too loose, plus they taper in at the bottom. I guess it really depends what you plan to do in them?

Lex, thanks for that! I will say, those ladies certainly look fit! I see what you mean re: the bounce. Good link!

Just to update on the shoulder:

Friday I tried my hand at Oly drills. I was able to do broomstick snatch drills with no problem and my shoulder felt perfect. In fact, i think my form looked pretty darn good and I was dropping under the bar so easy and fast. YAY!

However, once I picked up the Oly bar and tried to do some drills with that, the shoulder said no. Especially when I tried any overhead position. So that blows.

I was able to C&Js with weight tho (just fiddled around with 55lbs) and the shoulder felt totally fine. So worse comes to worse, if the shoulder is still painful within a week I’ll go to the Oly gym and work on my C&Js and do some lame-ass snatch drills until the shoulder is healed up. Maybe start working with the kids bar and move up from there…F.M.L.

At any rate, I was planning on doing more upper body stuff that day (did some pullups, pushups, tried stretches, but they hurt) but I was pretty depressed about the shoulder and I called it quits.

I’m leaving for the West coast tomorrow AM for bizness and pleasure - i’m really excited! I’ve never been to the West coast! I’ll probably take a few days off from the gym, but I scouted out some gyms in the area, so i do hope to i can get in a few training days. I know the hotel has a gym too, but I find hotel gyms a bit depressing. lol. We’ll see.

Soccer later today - woot woot! Wish me luck!

No snatches…Boo!
C&Js…Yay!
West Coast…Yay!
Soccer…Yay!

So, that’s 3 Yays and 1 Boo. I think you are doing OK

It does sound like you’re healing!

How do upper body stretches feel? Like the broomstick stretch-the one where you have a snatch grip on the broomstick and rotate all the way around (or maybe that’s bad with your injury?)

I was under the impression too much bounce in the bottom of the squat wasn’t a good thing, but you use it occasionally/sparingly to get a bit extra. I’ve actually made a point of not bouncing but instead having a more controlled descent and forcing myself to use strength to get out of the hole.

Good luck at Soccer! And Pleasure on the West Coast =D

Uh yeah, watch Despicable Me now! Best movie ever… kinda.
But definetely in my Top 5 <3

Have fun on the West coast.
At least you can do some Oly lifts despite the shoulder, yippee!
You still sound frustrated about the upper bod work though ;(
It’ll get better soon, don’t push it.

Have a great trip chica! Hope you find some suitable gym(s). You are so right about the ones in hotels. I was in a very nice sauna in a hotel in Buffalo once. Gym sucked but sauna was awesome.

And take it easy on that shoulder. You DO NOT want to re-injure it at this point. Give it time to heal properly.

Hey masch.

When doing olympic style squats, they should be done fast just like the olympic lifts. That is the whole point of the sport, to develop explosive strength. When you do a clean and jerk, the goal is not trying to feel the burn in the muscles or to feel certain muscles working, the goal is to get the weight up and complete the lifts. The faster and more explosive you become, the more weight you will be able to lift(technique plays a huge role here as well of course).

Same thing with the olympic squat, you should go down fast, if you must bounce a bit in the bottom it’s okay although extreme bouncing is not recommended. The whole point is to get your body used to moving “fast” with heavier weight over time. I remember when I was doing olympic weightlifting, 3 reps in the squat were considered pretty high reps.

Check this out:

omg, the look on your face when you failed was so cute…like FML cute  nice attempt!!! OTRA! OTRA! OTRA!

where you going on the West Coast masch? If you need any sight seeing ideas post away cause there are quite a few of us west coasters that could give you ideas

those were some seriously deep squats! Impressive

hey der V,

just checking in.

pause squats (slow descent, pause, explosive up) will develop some really good leg strength.
riding the bounce is a bit more of a technique - but nice to develop the strength to use with the technique.
bouncing hard out the hole can do your knees in over time IF you are a person who’s hamstrings smash into your calves before you get to the end of your hamstring length (seems to be more of a guy with short femurs big muscles and narrow stance thing).

I’ve seen a couple vids of females who are super-bendy whose butt hits the platform (failed lift) before they get to the end of their hamstring length (the bottom of their squat). Guess for them they want to aim to catch a bit higher and really slow their descent with the bar as fast as they can…

glad to hear the cleans are going okay. sorry to hear your shoulder isn’t 100% though. enjoy the west coast! I’ve seen 2 airports over there but that is all.

Have an awesome trip masch…never been to the left coast either, represent for us back east!

Coming to Cali to see your favorite Viking Maschy?

better stop by, don’t make me hunt you down like an animal…

Sorry that shoulder is still holding you back. Injuries suck!

Maschy - That was an awesome squat video. I need to practice ditching the weight so I can get over my squat rack fear. Any your booty from the side - Wow - That’s some bubble butt action. Those ATG squats are workin’! As for the bounce Alexus is talking about. My squat has NO bounce.

Enjoy your trip out this way!

Greetings from San Fransisco!!

Things are absolutely lovely here on the West coast - beautiful weather, wonderful people, tons of yummy and healthy food - simply amazing! They also really like their vanity plates over here - weird. (Matty, seriously, SO different from NYC - you’d flip!)

Thanks for all the great feedback on the squatz everyone. Ronaldo and Alexus, you bring up some great points about being explosive - makes so much sense! Gnarly vid too! <— as they say here in Cali

Now I’m heading off to Seattle for a few days. I’m definitely looking forward to getting some training in while there - check out some of them juicy Washington state meatheads

I’ll catch up with y’all when I’m back East!

Stay beautiful, people

Very nice. Glad you’re having fun Masch.

Thats it, Im moving…ENJOY MASCH!
