Need for Olympic Lifts

Hey CT,

I’m hoping to get a home gym soon, and don’t want to overspend.
I love the O lifts (my butchered version of them), but bumper plates are quite expensive, so I wondered if you feel they are of utmost importance in the toolbox.
I lift for sports performance and just strength (cool to be strong). And I don’t mind looking good nekkid’.

And do you feel they can be replaced? Maybe by jumps/med balls?

Any input is welcome! And good luck at the games!

I bought my barbell and iron plates about a year ago on Craigslist. I practice my O’s and they work well for me. I do intend to buy some bumpers eventually, maybe a couple here and there. They’re expensive though.

Personally a good bar and bumper plates (training bumpers are much less expensive then they were thanks to Crossfit) and rack (or half rack) are the first things I’d buy (well they were the first things UI bought). Yeah they can be expensive but they will last you a heckuva long time.

Are the Olympic lifts replaceable? No. If you do them properly they provide a unique stimulus that you don’t find elsewhere. However if someone cannot do them properly I prefer that they drop them from their program.

Thanks for the replies!

I was thinking about buying the Ohio or Rogue bar (multipurpose) and 140 kg of training bumpers. Using cheap iron plates on top of that for heavier lifts like the power lifts. And buying the rogue yoke and making jerk boxes. Yoke works alot like rack (and can be used as yoke of course) and the jerk blocks can function as blocks and safety pins.

If my budget recovers I probably will buy an axle (heard good stuff of them) and just a load of cheap iron plates.
