Alright guys, I have become obsessed with the idea of building my own oly-style workout station at home in my garage. I am in the market for a pair of uprights, an adjustable bench, and a set of weights (oly bar and plates).
Ideally, I would like bumper plates, but after looking around I was pretty disappointed as to how expensive they are. Does anybody have any suggestions in terms of websites/places to buy these items?
I would love to have a setup with some good uprights, an oly bar, an adjustable bench, and some nice colored bumped plates. Is this unrealistic?
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks guys.
I just kind of finished up doing the same thing. Here’s the stuff I ended up getting.
Squat Racks: Ironmind Vulcan Racks II (I also got the dipping uprights for these) www.ironmind.com
Safety Racks: Ironmind Pillars of Power II. www.iromind.com
Adjustable Bench: York 0-90 Flat to Incline Bench. www.sportskids.com
Bumpers and Bar: Ultimate Budget Set- Includes Pendlay bar, and 2 each of 20, 15, and 10K bumpers (or 45, 35, 25lb if you prefer) http://store.wfwclub.com/index.html
If you want colored bumpers, I know Bigger, Faster, Stronger sells colored bumpers that aren’t too expensive.
For that setup I suppose it was somewhere in the neighborhood of $2000-2200. Not cheap, but I think I got some pretty good equipment. I’d love to get a good training bumper set from one of respected companies (Eleiko, Leoko, or Werksan) but I’ll have to budget the $3000 required for that at some other time. The bumper set I got from Wichita Falls is good enough for now.
Damn, your setup looks really good. Thanks for posting that!
Yeah, bigger faster stronger has some great deals on plates now that I checked that out… I wouldnt mind getting my plates from them then maybe the economy bar from Pedlay.
Anyways, these are the plates I’m looking at right now. Any comments? I hope they arent all yellow…
This is a Crossfit link that’ll link you to a bunch of equipment discussions on the Crossfit board. I read through most of that info before I started buying my stuff. You should read through the bumper discussions because, if I remember right, I thought some people said the rubber-rimmed CAP bumpers didn’t hold up all that well.
The other colored BFS bumpers I think got some positive reports. As for the color, I’m pretty sure the bumpers won’t all be yellow. I think the 35s are blue and the 45s are red.
Here’s another Crossfit journal link that’ll give some info on putting together a garage gym.
This is the set im looking at now… I think I’m just going to lay down some rubber as to not damage the garage, which was the reason for bumper plates before (plus they are so much more badass than regular plates).
I am not an OLifter, and have no immediate plans of becoming one. I train to improve my athletic ability for basketball.

How do you like the Pillars of Power II? I had the previous style and really loved them til I lost them in a fire. Now I have to replace them and was wondering about the newer design which is a full 4 inches shorter in adjustment.
How many holes are drilled into the Pillar of Power II base vertical posts? Is it 1 or 2? The Vulcan Rack base has 2 holes drilled into the base vertical posts, which is ingenious because it allows the dipping bars and squat.bench bars to be adjusted in 1 inch increments.
If Ironmind drilled only 1 hole in the Pillar of Power II base, then the safety racks will adjust in 2 inch increments instead of 1 inch increments.
