N.O.V. - Sh*t, Suck, Good and Great

as it applies to the Average Man(see other thread)ONLY.
Not to the Huge Weight Destroying Mothers on the site ! At what weights would someone have to lift to go up in grade? Either in absolute or strength/ weight ratio

I ask as someone who lifts in places like the 24Hrs of LaFatness, watching what others are or are not lifting …

I ask this, as someone who weighs 187 with the unenviable following lifts: 365/205/455. Then again I can cycle 23miles in an Hour !

If we are applying the standards to the average man, wouldn’t this mean that one is simply great at being average once they achieve “great” numbers?

T3h Punisher. I guess what I am asking is “what would the common man” be able to lift.
Yeah, I think we could establish that the following would be GREAT “raw” 700/500/700.
Just how does the rest fall out …

Google strength standards for college football players…Defensive backs (around 187) have the following standards for Excellent. Bench 290, Squat 390, and Powerclean 200.

Average guy can’t squat and is unlikely to bench a single plate. Let’s throw the average person out of this equation.

Wouldn’t the rest fall out to “good” “suck” and “shit” respectively? Perhaps I don’t understand the question.

I think anytime you see two plates on the bench and 3 on the squat then they have legit “average” strength…after that it’s a matter of goals.

Great… I would say 70% of the current WR in your weight class. That is quite respectable

Press: 1 x bw.

Bench: 1.5 x bw.

Squat: 2 x bw.

DL: 2.5 x bw.

After reading this site for years it seems to me that these are the standard stats for a average man to achieve.

Florelius: Maybe at Minimum that is what we would expect from the Typical T-Nation breatheren, yet in all the fitness center traveling I have done over the last 25 years, It seems to have only gotten Worse ! Sure, monday is International Bench day. I get it… But I do not see Anyone (alhtough many more Females now) using either the Squat Rack or the Power Rack !

I seriously doubt that 80% of the people out there could pull off your very reasonable figures ! In fact I know it…

What prompted this question to begin with T3h Punisher and all other is what I can the 50% law. Basically it state that if I take up a sport,
then within a 1 year period I should be able to accomplish what 50% of the current state of Elite is.

So the Dead is now 2 people over 1000. Why not aim for 500 when I am currently at 455 @187bx ?
So the Mens Elite marathon time is 2:15. I ran chicago in 2010 in 3:35…

Do you see my point. Most of the people out there who Actually GO to a fitness center, I believe are still bleeding Vags’.
I dont even know if I qualify to even be out of the shit…ha ha ha

Set your own standards - and they should be high. Very high.
Basing your standards on what the average meat-gazer does in the gym is the opposite of everything that is NOV.
You rise to the level you expect.

And before any of the Genetic Excuses cry and whine about their arm length, wrist width or penis - read about Charlotte Brown. She certainly wouldn’t use the norm as a measuring stick.

@KillDirk. I agree that your regular gym goer will not achieve those stats and I havent either, but a bw Press and 1.5 x bw Bench are goals I want to achieve in the future. I think however a 2 x bw ( IPF depth or deeper ) squat are less reasonable for the average person and I will personally settle for a 2 x bw deadlift.

I personally think those standards are reasonable starting goals for everybody who wants to go above average. They are all relatively “easy” to achieve, how easy depends on individual.

Nonetheless, all of these goals should be your aim. I don’t really see the point for regular guy to drop the harder ones out and go for easy targets. I’m a shitty presser, and 2x bw squat is more easier goal for me than1,5 bw bench. I will anyway reach for these both, even thought the bench (and press!) can take much longer time. I will get there (and beyond) eventually.

Im sorry, but this is really low goals IMO. I think anyone who works hard and actually fucking cares about training can push further than this, im more than likely younger than you and am extremely close to these and beating them in squat/pull.

It depends. If your main goal is to gain strength, you should break these with 1-5 years of consistent training. If you’re an athlete, and strength is not your main goal, these are ok numbers. Nonetheless, these should be numbers that majority of gym rats should aim (and majority of trainees a
re below these).

PS. Of course you should aim above these. But it would be unproductive to start going to gym with 650 squat in your mind. Smaller steps lead to steady progress.

I read an interesting article yesterday by Greg Nuckols titled “What it takes to Break World Records” Written by someone who has held and broken lifting records in multiple weight classes. The number one determining factor was not working hard, it was genetics. Finally someone at the top who truly understands.

If one can do these while not looking like shit with their shirt off and still being able to run/jump/play, they’re strong. Obviously not elite, but definitely strong by any “average” standard.

Just read it. Awesome article. Too bad the average person is incapable of displaying logic or the capacity for abstract thought and will think he was being an egotistical dick.

I like the article because I can relate. I hit a double body weight bench basically lifting a crapshoot made up program once every 5-7 days. Some people never do that. Yet I have trained super focused in rock climbing for over 13 yrs, and I am pretty good, but by no means great. One I am genetically gifted in, the other I am not.

Your definition of strong, is weak IMO
